Wofford 1, UNC Asheville 0
SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Sophomore forward Chloe Brackett scored the game-winning goal in the 54th minute as the Wofford women’s soccer team earned its first victory of the season, defeating UNC Asheville, 1-0 at Snyder Field on Sunday.
In the first half, both teams had opportunities to go in front. UNC Asheville had the first attempt of the match when midfielder Amanda Dailor had a shot that hit the crossbar. Wofford’s first opportunity came in the 15th minute, when Brackett fired a shot from 18 yards away that hit the far right post.
The Terriers would have another great opportunity in the half when sophomore forward Mary Beth Bleekrode had a free kick that was saved and punched out of play by the Bulldogs junior goalkeeper, Heather Muller, in the 26th minute.
In the second half, the pressure from the Terriers paid off in the 54th minute. Senior midfielder Alex Kachulis found junior midfielder Maureen Buff, who quickly found Brackett just outside the 18-yard box. Brackett then fired home a shot from 23 yards out that beat Muller into the top of the net. The goal was Brackett’s first of the season..
Wofford continued to pressure the Bulldogs’ defense and forced Muller to make many saves. UNC Asheville had a couple of attempts late in the match to try to even the score. Its best chance came in the 87th minute, when Kennedy Garrett rifled a shot that was just wide of the goal. The Terriers held on to earn their first victory of the season.
For the match, Wofford outshot UNC Asheville 18-16, and won the corner kick battle 9-0.
For the Terriers, senior goalkeeper Kimberly Cohn earned her first win and her second shutout of the season. She faced a total of 16 Bulldogs shots and made five saves. For UNC Asheville, Muller took her first loss of the year, facing 18 Terrier shots and making a season-high 10 saves.
Wofford will be back in action on Sept. 8, when it travels to Boiling Springs, N.C., to take on the Runnin’ Bulldogs of Gardner-Webb University at 2 p.m. The Terriers’ next home match will be on Friday, Sept. 27, when they host Francis Marion University at 7 p.m.
Appalachian State 2, Southern Utah 1
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Applachian State was victorious in its second game of the Colorado College Invitational, playing in its first game ever against the Thunderbirds of Southern Utah and coming away with a 2-1 victory on Sunday.
Appalachian State’s offense was in full force against the T-Birds. Appalachian registered 16 shots, putting 10 on goal.
The scoring was started in the second half by Appalachian State’s Sam Neill. The goal came in the 53rd minute on assists from Amber Miller and Sonia Sanchez for Neill’s first goal of the season and a 1-0 lead.
Nearly 10 minutes later, in the 63rd minute, Julia Holz tallied her third goal of the season on a breakaway for a 2-0 Appalachian State lead.
Southern Utah would score seven minutes later in the 70th minute on a goal by Aurora Moberly. The Mountaineers were able to hang on with strong defense throughout to earn their first win of the season.
Amy Kolowksy got the starting nod in goal for Sarah Strickland's squad. Kolowsky allowed just one goal while making four saves in the contest.
The Mountaineers are back in action on Sept. 5 when they host UNC Asheville. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
Davidson 0, Florida Atlantic 0 (2OT)
FORT MYERS, Fla. – In another great all-around effort and battle by the Davidson Wildcats, the women’s soccer team earned its third straight shutout in playing to another scoreless draw vs. Florida Atlantic during the final day of the Embassy Suite Classic held by Florida Gulf Coast at the FGCU Soccer Complex on Sunday.
The Wildcats have shut out Coastal Carolina, FGCU and FAU in the last three games. It’s the first time they have blanked three straight opponents since October 2009.
Rachel Locke, Becca Fisher and Julia Singley were part of the all-tournament team. Locke had an outstanding weekend, picking up a pair of shutouts and stopping 13 shots on goal.
After a quiet first 45 minutes of play, Davidson had some great looks in the late parts of the second half. The ‘Cats fired off 13 of their 14 total shots and picked up nine corner kicks in the half. They had three straight corner kicks in one stretch in the half.
Natalie Spach missed a shot that went high in the 75th minute. Senior Lindsay Blum had a header that went wide left later off a corner kick. Then, with just over a minute left, freshman Kate Joss had a shot that was saved by FAU’s Courtney Zwetsch on a diving stop.
As regulation ran down, Stephanie Piperno, who hit one off the crossbar in the 80th minute, had an open look on the far side of the box, ripping a shot that went high.
Davidson dodged an Owl attack 2:45 into the second overtime, with Kayla Faulkner just missing a header to the right post after a header pass from Alexandra Cardenas in the 6-yard box. It was all set up after a corner kick that the Wildcats cleared, before FAU pushed the ball back into the 18-yard box.
Ashley Finke tried to end it with a low-liner shot for Davidson with four minutes left in the game, but Zwetsch stopped it on another diving save.
The Wildcats had a 10-7 advantage on corners, while FAU won the shot battle with 17 total, but only four of those went on frame compared to the ‘Cats’ five.
Davidson returns home to continue its nonconference slate of games, hosting Southern Methodist on Friday at 7 p.m.
The Citadel 1, Canisius 1 (2OT)
CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Citadel’s Mariana Garcia drilled a shot into the top of the net with 54 seconds remaining in regulation and neither team scored in the two overtime periods as the Bulldogs and Canisius played to a 1-1 tie in a women's soccer contest Sunday at WLI Field.
The Bulldogs (1-2-1) trailed since the final minute of the first half before Garcia took a pass from Jillian Meyer, dribbled through the Canisius defense and fired a bullet over the head of Golden Griffin goalkeeper Megan Tock for her fourth goal of the season.
Garcia was coming off her first career hat trick in a 3-1 win over Jacksonville State on Friday. The senior extended her school career records to 35 goals and 75 points, and she is the active leader in the Southern Conference in both categories.
Canisius (1-3-1) took a 1-0 lead with just 1:02 left in the opening half when Brianna Smith scored her fourth goal of the year off an assist by Callie Good. The Citadel peppered the Golden Griffin goal with 15 shots without scoring in the second half before Garcia knotted it up.
The Bulldogs finished with a 27-19 advantage in shots and created eight corner kicks to none for Canisius. Garcia finished with eight shots and Ruth Leiva added six, including four on goal.
Tock and Citadel goalkeeper Naomi Carter both had nine saves in their 110 minutes of action.
The Bulldogs are off until next Sunday, when they wrap up their three-game homestand with a 2 p.m. game against Charleston Southern at WLI Field.
Georgia 2, Furman 0
ATHENS, Ga. – Madeline Barker scored a pair of goals and Georgia limited Furman to just three shots on goal as the Bulldogs downed the Paladins, 2-0, in women's soccer action Sunday afternoon at Turner Stadium.
With the victory, Georgia improved to 3-1-0 on the season. The loss dropped Furman to 1-2-0.
Georgia outshot the Paladins 32-6, including a 17-3 advantage in shots on goal. After testing sophomore goalkeeper Maggie Grisell several times in the opening minutes, Georgia notched the go-ahead goal in the 21st minute. Barker raced into the right side of the box and held off her defender to fire a driving shot across the face of goal to the far side netting.
Furman created its best chances of the afternoon late in the first half. Stephanie DeVita created space for herself from 22 yards out on the left side of the box, but the sophomore saw her long-range effort clear the crossbar. Jamie Alexander got on the end of a cross into the box only to have a foul called on the Paladins, and Ali Simpson had her header off of an Alyssa Althoff cross blocked before being cleared out of the box.
The Bulldogs put the game out of reach in the 56th minute when Barker dispossessed a Paladin defender and drilled a shot into the upper left-hand corner for her second goal of the day.
Caitlin Woody earned the win in goal for the Bulldogs while recording three saves. Grisell stopped six first-half shots for Furman before Rose Hull turned away nine UGA shots in the final 45 minutes.
The Paladins return to the field on Thursday when they host USC Upstate at Stone Soccer Stadium. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m.
Alabama State 3, Chattanooga 2
MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women’s soccer team fell 3-2 to Alabama State on Sunday afternoon.
The Mocs fell to 1-2 overall and the Hornets moved to 3-1 on the season.
The Hornets scored first on a goal from Samantha Bruno, her first of the season, on an assist from Aaliyah Lewis to make it 1-0 in the 28th minute.
In the 36th minute, ASU was issued a yellow card when the keeper took out freshman Monica Speth in the box. Junior Crystal Mackezyk scored on the penalty kick to tie it up.
Neither team scored for the remainder of the half as the game went into intermission tied at 1-1.
Alabama State got the scoring started again in the second half with a goal in the 56th minute off the foot of India Pleasant on a pass from Anastasia McCleary to put her team ahead 2-1.
Chattanooga’s second goal of the game was scored by sophomore Clare Latham, her second of the season, and was assisted by classmate Skylar Brewer.
Pleasant found the net for the Hornets in the 73rd minute for the eventual game-winner, assisted by Alayna Smith.
Chattanooga outshot ASU 16-14, with eight shots on goal to the Hornets 10. Alabama State had three yellow cards and one red card ejection while Chattanooga had just one yellow in the physical contest.
UTC keeper Lauren Thomas made seven saves on the day, while ASU Kylee Hathaway had six saves in goal.
The Mocs return home on Sept. 8 to host UNC Asheville at Finley Stadium in a 2 p.m. matchup.
Georgia Southern at High Point, canc.
HIGH POINT, N.C. – Georgia Southern produced its best half of the season but fell victim to inclement weather as its match at High Point was abandoned in the 47th minute. The Eagles were leading at the time, but heavy thunderstorms made the field unplayable. No make-up will be scheduled between the teams.
At the half-hour mark, freshman Jennifer Wittick got on the end of a pass from Abria Allen to score the go-ahead goal for Georgia Southern.
The Eagles carried the 1-0 advantage into the locker room at the interval along with a 5-4 lead in shots and a 3-0 advantage in shots on goal.
That advantage, however, was nullified when the match was called on account of rain.
The Eagles open a homestand this weekend when they host Stetson at Eagle Field. The match from the heart of the Erk Russell Athletic Park starts at 7 p.m.

GREENVILLE, S.C. – UNCG’s women’s soccer match against UNCW at the East Carolina Tournament was suspended due to lightning and will be replayed Monday at 11 a.m.

GREENVILLE, N.C. – The final match of the 2013 East Carolina Soccer Tournament between the host Pirates and Western Carolina on Sunday has been postponed due to inclement weather. The match has been rescheduled for Monday at 4 p.m.
