Furman’s Wearn advances to U.S. Amateur match play

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Former Furman golfer Laura Wearn defeated Allisen Corpuz of Honolulu, Hawaii, 3 & 2, Wednesday in the match play round of 64 at the U.S. Women's Amateur Championship at the Country Club of Charleston in Charleston, S.C.  Corpuz entered the round as the tournament's second-seeded player.

The round of 32 will be played Thursday morning, followed by the round of 16, which will air on the Golf Channel Thursday from 4-6 p.m.

Wearn, a native of Charlotte, N.C., established a new school single season record during the 2012-13 season by posting a 73.35 stroke average over 31 rounds.  The senior totaled 12 rounds at par or better and recorded seven top-10 finishes in 11 tournaments, including second-place showings at the Mercedes-Benz Intercollegiate, Lady Bulldog Individual Championship and Briar's Creek Invitational.

Wearn, ranked No. 39 in the Golfstat rankings, earned Golfweek Honorable Mention All-America honors and All-Southern Conference accolades and received an at-large bid as an individual to the NCAA West Regional at Stanford University.  She fired rounds of 74-74-73 to finish with a share of 30th place at 8-over par.

 

App State’s Zagoria misses cut at U.S. Amateur

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Appalachian State University women's golfer Haley Zagoria competed this week at the U.S. Women’s Amateur Championship at the Country Club of Charleston.

The Atlanta, Ga., native finished two rounds of stroke play shooting a 20-over-par 162. Zagoria shot an 80 in round one while recording an 82 in round two. She finished 9-over-par in round one and 11-over-par in round two to finish tied for 147th.

The cutoff after two rounds of play was 8-over 150. The leader of the tournament is Yumi Matsubara, who is currently 7-under par after shooting a 135 over two rounds of play.

Zagoria ranked third last season on the team with a stroke average of 80.62. She completed 13 rounds of golf for the Mountaineers during the 2012-13 campaign.
