SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Appalachian State’s Haley Zagoria and Wofford’s Anne Marie Covar were recently two of 10 players to qualify for the U.S. Women’s Amateur Championship, which will be held at the Country Club of Charleston in Charleston, S.C., from Aug. 5-11.
A rising junior, Zagoria shot 72 at Kiawah Island Golf Resort’s Cougar Point on Monday, completing the event with an even-par score to finish fifth in the field of 102 golfers in the first of 18 qualifying events that will be held across the nation.
Zagoria joined the Mountaineers following one season at Georgia State and a successful high school run that included three consecutive all-state selections, a 4A state championship, and being named to the National High School Coaches Association Georgia National team.
Covar, a native of Edgefield, S.C., will be entering her senior season this fall at Wofford. She shot a 73 at the qualifier at Cougar Point.
This season for the Terriers, Covar finished first at the Bulldog Invitational and second in the Terrier Intercollegiate. At the Southern Conference Championship, she was tied as the top Wofford finisher.
The championship is open to any female amateur golfer with a USGA Handicap Index not exceeding 5.4. The USGA accepted a record 1,170 entries for the 2013 U.S. Women's Amateur, surpassing the 1,123 entries the USGA accepted for the 2012 championship. The Women's Amateur has exceeded 1,000 entries for the past four championships, including 2013.
Sectional qualifying, played over 18 holes, will be conducted at 18 sites between July 1-16.
The Country Club of Charleston will be set up at 6,488 yards and will play to a par of 36-35=71. Tee times will be announced in early August.
