SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Six Southern Conference players were named to the American Baseball Coaches Association All-Atlantic Region teams, as announced by the organization Monday.
Elon first baseman Ryan Kinsella earned a spot on the first team, while Appalachian State second baseman Hector Crespo, Citadel catcher Joe Jackson, UNCG outfielder Christian Wolfe and Western Carolina shortstop Aaron Attaway and third baseman Tyler White were second-team selections.
Kinsella continued to add to his haul of accolades following an outstanding junior season in the Maroon and Gold. His honor marks the sixth time in Elon's NCAA Division I history that a Phoenix player has earned ABCA All-Region honors.
Kinsella has already earned All-America accolades from Baseball America, the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association and Louisville Slugger.
The 18th-round selection of the Arizona Diamondbacks ranks second nationally with 21 home runs and 78 RBIs. The 2013 Southern Conference Player of the Year also ranks among the national leaders in runs scored (56), hits (80), doubles (19), slugging percentage (.656) and total bases (168).

At one point this season, Kinsella had reached base safely in 37 consecutive games. He finished the year with 20 multi-RBI performances and 24 multi-hit games in 2013. Of his 78 RBIs, 20 came with two outs.
Kinsella was a first-team All-SoCon pick as well as a SoCon All-Tournament Team selection and a Charlottesville All-Regional Team pick this year.
Crespo hit .336 while starting all 54 games at second base for Appalachian State (30-24) in 2013. The first-team all-Southern Conference honoree led Appalachian with 48 runs scored and tied for the team lead with 40 RBIs. His 22 stolen bases were good for second on the team, a tie for fifth in the SoCon and rank 67th nationally this season. He also put together a sterling .979 fielding percentage with just six errors in 292 chances at second base.
Appalachian State’s all-time leader in games played (225) and stolen bases (101), Crespo is Appalachian’s 34th all-time all-region selection and the ninth in the last five seasons.
The New York Yankees selected Crespo in the 34th round of this month’s Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft. Crespo has been assigned to the Staten Island Yankees of the New York-Penn League (Class A short season), which opens its 2013 season on Monday night at home versus the Brooklyn Cyclones.
The Citadel’s Jackson earned third-team All-America honors from both the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association and Louisville Slugger/Collegiate Baseball. He was named to the All-Southern Conference first team by the league's media and coaches and was the Most Outstanding Player at the SoCon tournament.
Jackson was a fifth-round draft choice by the Texas Rangers and will begin his professional career as a member of the short season Spokane Indians in the Northwest League.
Jackson batted .386 with 88 hits, 19 doubles, 13 homers, 66 runs scored and 67 RBIs as a junior in his final season with the Bulldogs. He led the SoCon in on-base percentage (.495) and was second in runs and RBI. He finished with 150 total bases and a slugging percentage of .658.

UNCG’s Wolfe has already garnered second-team All-America accolades by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association and Louisville Slugger third-team All-America laurels by Collegiate Baseball.

Wolfe is the first UNCG player since Jermaine Mitchell in 2006 to lead the Southern Conference in batting average and helped the Blue and Gold pace the circuit in team average for the first time in program history. The first-team All-SoCon selection batted a sizzling .441 in conference play with 49 hits and 17 RBIs in 111 at bats. He also scored 28 runs and roped eight doubles.
Beginning with a base knock March 26 against North Carolina A&T, Wolfe hit safely in 21 straight games to tie the school record also held by Jeremy Purcell. During the stretch, he turned in 11 multiple-hit efforts and led the team during the campaign with 30 such performances.
Attaway and White – both of which were first team All-SoCon selections this year – are the 30th and 31st different Catamounts to earn the distinction WCU all-time, and make seven honorees since 2000. WCU has had 38 All-Atlantic overall selections dating back to 1977, including eight individuals with multiple selections.
The two were the only Catamounts to start every game in 2013, with Attaway starting all 59 games at shortstop while White made 56 starts at third base and three at first base, where he was a preseason All-SoCon selection. Attaway paced WCU with 27 multiple-hit games, while White was third with 25. The duo paced the squad with multiple-RBI outings, including a team-best 20 by White and 14 for Attaway to rank second on the team.
The ABCA All-Atlantic Region honor punctuates the final season of White’s four-year career, which saw the third baseman earn a pair of All-America honors, including third-team plaudits from both Collegiate Baseball and the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA).
A product of Forest City, N.C., White batted .363 in 2013, collecting a WCU single-season record 27 doubles – the most among any player honored by the ABCA – to complement his team-leading 16 home runs. He tallied 91 hits to rank second in the SoCon this season and was third among the 19 position players named All-Atlantic Region.
White, who was drafted by the Houston Astros with the first pick of the 33rd round (977th overall pick), reported to extended spring training minicamp in Kissimmee, Fla., before receiving his team assignment.
Attaway finished the 2013 season ranked in the top 10 of eight different offensive categories in the SoCon, including leading the league with 97 hits and 68 runs scored. Additionally, his 97 hits were tied for the most among the 19 position players honored by the ABCA. The junior batted .363 on the season and posted a .592 slugging percentage, 10th in the SoCon’s final rankings. Attaway is one of five Catamount players playing for the San Luis Obispo Blues of the California Collegiate League this summer. He will return for his senior season in 2014 for WCU.
