Former Bulldog McGuiness Makes MLB Debut

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Former Citadel standout Chris McGuiness made his major league debut with the Texas Rangers on Friday and had his first two big league hits and first RBI in Sunday's win over Toronto.

The left-handed hitting McGuiness batted seventh and played first base in the Ranger lineup on Sunday. He went opposite field for a double in the fourth to score David Murphy and bring the Rangers within 3-2 in a game they eventually won 6-4. He added a single in the sixth and finished 2-for-4 on the afternoon.

McGuiness was batting .275 with a slugging percentage of .477 to go along with 19 doubles, six home runs and 34 RBIs in 55 games at Round Rock, the Rangers' AAA affiliate. He was called up when regular first baseman Mitch Moreland went on the disabled list.

After starring at The Citadel from 2007-09, McGuiness was selected by the Red Sox in the 13th round of the June 2009 draft. He was traded to the Rangers the following June as part of a deal that sent Jarrod Saltalamacchia to Boston.

He was picked up by the Indians in the Rule 5 draft last December but returned to the Rangers' organization when he was not on Cleveland's 25-man major league roster at the start of the 2013 campaign.

In his final season at The Citadel, McGuiness batted .367 with 15 homers and 59 RBIs while leading the nation with 65 walks. He earned first team All-Southern Conference honors and was also named to the ESPN the Magazine Academic All-America first team.

In three seasons with the Bulldogs, McGuiness played in 154 games with 140 starts. He had career totals of 157 hits in 510 at bats (.308 average) with 34 doubles, 27 homers, 108 runs scored, 123 RBIs and 122 walks.
