Appalachian State softball senior Allie Cashion, Western Carolina softball senior Haley Pace and Chattanooga senior Sara Poteat have been named a CoSIDA Academic all-district selection, CoSIDA announced on Thursday. As first team selections, the three now advance to the Capital One All-Academic Team ballot.
Cashion, who carries a 3.67 grade-point average, as an actuarial science major is now eligible to be named to the Academic All-America team for the second year in a row.
Cashion has appeared in and started 43 of the Apps’ 45 games and currently ranks second in the SoCon with a .382 batting average and 42 RBI
The senior left fielder boasts a .702 slugging percentage and a .468 on-base percentage in her 131 at-bats, which rank her fourth, and fifth in the conference, respectively.
Cashion has line 18 doubles on the season, which ties the single season record. The senior broke the App State career record earlier this season as she now has 48 career doubles.
The Waxhaw, N.C. native has a team-high eight home runs on the season and is eight short of tying the career record of 44.
Western Carolina softball senior Haley Pace was named to the 2013 Capital One Academic All-District III First Team selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
The third baseman, from Canton, N.C., becomes the first player in Catamount softball’s eight-year history to be named to the academic all-district team. Pace carries a 3.98 GPA in biology. She is a two-time selection to the Southern Conference Spring All-Academic Team and also two-time SoCon Academic Honor Roll.
Pace has a .254 batting average and ranks fourth on the team in hits with 35 this season. She ranks second on the team in homeruns with six and fourth on the team in RBI with 20. Pace needs four RBI she currently has 96 in her career, to break the Western Carolina career RBI record which is 99 set by Lauren Ross (2006-09).
Pace is one of three players from the Southern Conference to be named to the All-District III Academic team as Chattanooga’s Sara Poeteat and Appalachian State’s Allie Cashion were also honored.
The 2013 Capital One Academic All-District Softball Teams recognize the nation’s top student-athletes for their combined performances athletically and in the classroom.
Lady Mocs senior second baseman Sara Poteat (Thomaston, Ga.) was named to the Capitol One Academic All-District First Team Thursday afternoon as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). It is the second time in her career the Thomaston, Ga., native has been named to the District 3 team – the first coming in 2012.
This is the third season in a row a Lady Moc has been named a first-team academic all-district member, beginning with Chattanooga legend Tiffany Baker in 2011. The highly-decorated second baseman is now qualified to be named an Academic All-American.
Academic first-team members are selected based on both their performance on the field and in the class room. Athletically, Poteat is batting .335 with a team-best 56 hits this season. The speedy infielder has stolen a team-high 17 bases and currently ranks third all-time at UTC with 32 stolen bases.
Academically, Poteat maintains a 3.8 GPA and was named to both the Athletic Director’s Honor Roll and Dean’s List in the 2012-13 school year. Sara graduates Saturday with a degree in Exercise Science.
