Griffin, Neitzel Earn Final Weekly Baseball Awards

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Citadel right fielder Tyler Griffin has been named the Southern Conference Player of the Week and Davidson right-hander Nick Neitzel has been named the SoCon Pitcher of the Week for all games May 13-18. The selections are made by the league office.

Griffin made a triumphant return to the Bulldog lineup after missing 18 games with a fractured foot, hitting .588 with three home runs, two doubles, five runs and 13 RBIs in The Citadel’s four games.
    
In his first game back, the Gainesville, Fla., junior went 3-for-4 with two home runs and a career-high tying five RBIs and three runs scored as The Citadel trounced Charleston Southern on Tuesday, 21-6.

Against UNCG on Thursday, Griffin was 1-for-4 with a walk, a run and an RBI. The following day, he again matched his career high with five RBIs, going 3-for-5 with a home run. In Saturday’s regular-season finale, he turned in his third three-hit game of the week, going 3-for-4 with a walk, two doubles and two driven in.

The Citadel returns to action on Wednesday as the fourth-seeded Bulldogs will kick off the SoCon Baseball Championship against No. 5 seed Appalachian State at 10 a.m. at Fluor Field in Greenville, S.C.

Other top hitters included: Hector Crespo (Appalachian State), Carl Wise (College of Charleston), Nathan Becker (Davidson), Chris Ohmstede (Furman), Ben Morgan (Georgia Southern), Trevor Edwards (UNCG), Christiaan Durdaller (Samford), Tyler White (Western Carolina) and Alec Paradowski (Wofford).

Neitzel allowed just an unearned run in a rain-shortened complete-game win over Samford on Saturday, 12-1. The Coral Gables, Fla., sophomore surrendered just four hits and two walks in six innings as the Wildcats won their final regular-season series and wrapped up their season with five wins in their last six tries. The win was the first of Neitzel’s career. He struck out four batters on the day.

Other top pitchers included: Jeffrey Springs (Appalachian State), Blake Ross (College of Charleston), Austin Pritcher (The Citadel), Evan Challenger (Georgia Southern), Eric Wright (Samford), Jonathan Waszak (Western Carolina) and Bradley Evsich (Wofford).
