Chattanooga finishes tied for 19th at NCAA East Regional
AUBURN, Ala. – The Chattanooga Mocs women’s golf team finished tied for 19th with Penn State at the NCAA East Regional at Auburn University Club on Saturday.
The Mocs’ 911 over their 54 holes is the second-best total in NCAA postseason play for the squad. The group also tallied a school postseason record 137 pars for the event.
Jordan Britt led the way, shooting a 1-over par 73 in the final round to finish with a total of 224. It is her best score in three regional appearances, topping last year’s 225 at Penn State by one. Her 40 pars are a new school best in regional action.
Emily McLennan was next for the Mocs, shooting 227. She was followed closely by Agathe Sauzon at 229. Isabella Loza ended play at 231, while Porsche Campbell shot 247.
UTC’s record performances came in its sixth appearance in as many years of the program’s existence. It was the fifth consecutive regional for team after Emma de Groot (2008-11) qualified as an individual in the 2008 inaugural season.
Defending national champion Alabama dominated the field, shooting 20-under par 844. No. 20 Tulane came in second at 852 (-12), as No. 5 Arkansas and No. 17 Oklahoma State are tied for third at level-par (864). That foursome is joined by No. 23 Texas, Northwestern, No. 8 UCLA and Auburn in qualifying for the NCAA Championship.
Alabama’s Stephanie Meadow posted three rounds in the 60s to win medalist honors by six strokes. She shot 13-under par 203 to claim victory by six over Princeton’s Kelly Shon. Shon and Tennessee’s Erica Popson nabbed the two individual spots, advancing to the finals, as well.
Furman’s Wearn ties for 30th at NCAA West Regional
STANFORD, Calif. – Furman’s Laura Wearn shot a final-round 73 to finish with a share of 30th place on Saturday in the NCAA Women’s Golf West Regional at the par-71, 6,267-yard Stanford Golf Course.
Playing as an individual at the NCAA West Regional after receiving an at-large bid to the postseason, Wearn shook off bogeys on her first two holes to play the next 16 holes at even par to shoot 2-over par. The senior, playing her final round as a Paladin, notched her lone birdie at No. 12 to finish in a three-way tie for 30th place at 8-over.
Wearn’s scores of 74-74-73 helped her finish the 2012-13 season with a 73.4 stroke average over 31 rounds, which ranks as the best single-season stroke average in Furman history.
Southern California (+7), Purdue (+8), Vanderbilt (+17), South Carolina (+22), Stanford (+23), Arizona (+37), Oregon (+37) and San Jose State (+37) made up the top eight teams and earned spots in the NCAA Championships on May 21-24 at the University of Georgia Golf Course in Athens, Ga.
Georgia’s Emilie Burger (-1) and Kent State’s Jennifer Ha (+1) also advanced to the NCAA Championships by being the top two finishers not on a top-eight team.
Purdue’s Paulo Reto and Southern Cal’s Annie Park tied for individual medalist honors at the NCAA West Regional at 7-under par.
UNCG’s Cnops ties for 35th at NCAA Central Regional
NORMAN, Okla. – UNCG sophomore women's golfer Fanny Cnops posted her best round of the week with a 3-under par 69 Saturday in the third and final round of the NCAA Central Regional, hosted by the University of Oklahoma at the Jimmie Austin OU Golf Club.
Cnops’ season ends with her second straight appearance in the NCAA Regional, as she did not earn a bid into the NCAA Championship, which is awarded to the top eight teams and top two individuals of each regional.
She finished her second postseason appearance with a 6-over par 222 (74-79-69), placing 35th overall. She improved her showing by two strokes and six spots in the final standings from last year’s NCAA East Regional (41st place, 224).
Cnops’ 69 score is tied for her fourth-lowest score of the season. She posted six birdies on the afternoon to overcome three bogeys for the 3-under par score. She was even after 11 holes, but notched three consecutive birdies on holes No. 3-5 before ending the tournament with four straight pars.
Third-ranked Duke won the event with a 13-under par 851 after firing a tournament-low 12-under par 276 in the final round. Fourth-ranked Oklahoma was second with a 7-under par 857, while Mississippi State, No. 9 Florida, No. 15 Arizona state, No. 16 UC Davis, Wisconsin and No. 27 Michigan State finished in the top eight and earned berths into the NCAA Championship.
Mississippi State’s Ally McDonald, ranked No. 29 in the country, took home the individual title with a 10-under par 206 after posting scores of 69-69-68. Oklahoma teammates AC Tanguay and Emily Collins finished tied for second with a 5-under par 211 along with Duke’s Alejandra Cangrejo.
Washington’s Ying Luo and Wake Forest’s Olafia Kristindottir finished tied for eighth overall with 1-under 215s to earn the two individual spots in the NCAA Championship, edging out four other golfers at 1-over par.
