Chattanooga up to 17th at NCAA East Regional
AUBURN, Ala. – The Chattanooga Mocs women’s golf team fired the second-best round of the morning wave to move into a tie for 17th at the NCAA East Regional at Auburn University Club on Friday. The Mocs’ 298 (+10) was 10 better than playing partner Ole Miss, as the two are tied at 607, two shots behind Florida International in 16th.
It was a very balanced effort for the Mocs. Jordan Britt and Agathe Sauzon each shot 2-over par 74 to pace their squad’s effort. Isabella Loza and Emily McLennan were one behind with 75s.
Britt, McLennan and Sauzon are all tied at 151 for UTC. Loza is just three behind that trio at 154. Porsche Campbell has a two-day total of 167.
The Mocs are just ahead of three top 50-ranked squads. No. 38 Texas State is one off Chattanooga’s pace at 608, while No. 47 Penn State is 20th at 611. No. 44 UCF is another five strokes back at 616.
Defending national champion Alabama is running away with the tourney at 22-under par 554. The second-ranked Crimson Tide is up 11 shots on No. 20 Tulane in second at 568 (-8). No. 5 Arkansas and No. 17 Oklahoma State are tied for third at plus-1 (577).
Alabama’s Stephanie Meadow shot 6-under par 66 to take a four-stroke individual lead at 10-under 134. Her teammates Jennifer Kirby and Emma Talley are tied for second at minus-6 138.
Saturday’s final 18 starts at noon for the Mocs on the 10th hole paired with FIU and Ole Miss. Campbell opens, with Loza (12:11), Britt (12:22), Sauzon (12:33) and McLennan (12:44) right behind.
Furman’s Wearn in 34th at NCAA West Regional
STANFORD, Calif. – Furman senior Laura Wearn fired her second straight 3-over 74 to move up to 34th place on Friday afternoon in the NCAA Women’s Golf West Regional at the par-71, 6,267-yard Stanford Golf Course.
After shooting a 2-over 38 on the back nine to begin her round, Wearn tallied birdies at the par-5 No. 1 and No. 7 to card a 36 on the front nine. The Charlotte, N.C., native, who qualified for the NCAA West Regional as an individual, trails tournament leader Annie Park (-4) of Southern California by 10 strokes through 36 holes.
The top eight teams in the regional’s 24-team field and top two individuals not on a qualifying team at the NCAA West Regional will advance to the NCAA Championships on May 21-24, at the University of Georgia Golf Course in Athens, Ga.
Final-round action at the Stanford Golf Course is set to tee off on Saturday morning.
UNCG’s Cnops tied for 76th at NCAA Central Regional
NORMAN, Okla. – UNCG sophomore women's golfer Fanny Cnops concluded Friday’s round two of the NCAA Central Regional, hosted by the University of Oklahoma at the Jimmie Austin OU Golf Club, in 76th place overall. Cnops will conclude her three-day, 54-hole event Saturday with an 8:25 a.m. (CT) tee time in round three.
Cnops, ranked No. 52 in the nation, posted a 7-over par 79 in round two. She sits at 9-over par 153 after 36 holes heading into the final day.
Emily Collins, the 49th-ranked golfer, holds the individual lead after two rounds with a 7-under par 137 after opening with a 67 in round one and a 2-under par 70 Friday. Mississippi State’s Ally McDonald is just one shot off the lead at 6-under par 138 with back-to-back rounds of 3-under par 69.
Fourth-ranked Oklahoma leads the team portion of the competition with a 7-under par 569 (283-286), while third-ranked Duke is at 1-under par 575 (284-291). The two teams are the only ones under par after 36 holes and will battle for the team title Saturday.
Cnops is one of six individuals in the Central Regional. Twenty-four teams were also selected to play in the Central Region, for a total of 126 golfers. The top eight teams and top two individuals from each regional will advance to the finals.
The championships finals will be held May 21-24 at the University of Georgia Golf Course in Athens, Ga., and will be hosted by the University of Georgia.
