Bulldogs win Samford Intercollegiate
HOOVER, Ala. – In the first hole of a sudden-victory playoff, the Samford University women’s golf team earned a one-stroke triumph over Louisiana-Monroe on Tuesday to claim the championship title of the 2013 Samford Intercollegiate held at the Hoover Country Club.
Samford and Louisiana-Monroe finished the two-day, three-round competition with identical team scores of 930. The Bulldogs held a three-stroke advantage heading into Tuesday’s play, but Louisiana-Monroe fired a sizzling final-round score of 303 to jump all the way from fifth to first place.
Tuesday’s one-hole playoff was held on No. 18 with all five competitors playing from each squad. After winning the coin toss and choosing to tee off first, Samford (308-309-313=930) rattled off four pars to secure the championship title of the 11-team event. Louisiana-Monroe (309-318-303=930) failed to record four pars to tie the Bulldogs and send the tournament to another playoff hole.
Rounding out the top five teams at the 2013 Samford Intercollegiate on Tuesday were Lamar (316-304-316=936), Jacksonville State (316-308-323=947) and West Florida (323-303-322=948).
Individually, Louisiana-Monroe’s Alison Knowles earned individual medalist honors with a three-round tally of 223 (72-76-75). She was followed by West Florida’s Elin Olsson (75-71-80=226) and Samford’s Bailey Gray, who placed third with a 54-hole score of 227 (75-75-77).
The Bulldogs’ Emily Stallings also earned a top-10 finish in the individual standings Tuesday. Stallings posted a three-round mark of 233 (80-77-76) and concluded the two-day tournament tied for sixth place.
All five Bulldogs finished ranked among the top 21. Senior Anna Heim carded a score of 236 (74-81-81) and placed 14th, while juniors Natalie Mitchell (82-76-79=237) and Alex Jasper (79-81-81=241) finished tied for 15th and 21st, respectively.
Samford’s Kayla Turner, who competed as an individual this week, earned a 19th-place performance with a three-round score of 240 (82-79-79).
The Samford University women’s golf team will next be in action Sunday through Tuesday as the Bulldogs travel to Hilton Head Island, S.C., for the Southern Conference Championships being held at the Moss Creek Golf Club.
Chattanooga finishes 12th at Web.com Intercollegiate
PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. – Sophomore Agathe Sauzon finished tied for eighth, shooting 1-over par 217 at the Web.com Intercollegiate at Marsh Landing Country Club. Sauzon, who shot 73 Tuesday, led the Chattanooga Mocs women’s golf team to a 12th-place finish in the event.
UTC shot 903 turning in a 302 today. Sauzon and Emily McLennan shot 73s Tuesday, while Jordan Britt and Porsche Campbell tallied 78s. Isabella Loza turned in the drop score with a 79.
Sauzon carded 15 pars in Tuesday’s final round. It gave her 41 total over the 54 holes, which is a new season high by a Moc.
Britt and McLennan finished second and third on the squad, respectively. Britt shot 224 for the two days, while McLennan ended up at 227. Campbell (235) and Loza (236) rounded out the scoring.
No. 14 Purdue was the runaway winner at minus-7 (857). It shot 283 (-5) to claim an eight-stroke triumph over Iowa State (865), which shot 2-under Tuesday. No. 17 Texas Tech was a distant third. The Boilermakers’ Paula Reto won a playoff over the Red Raiders’ Gabriella Dominguez after the duo ended up at minus-4 212.
Chattanooga heads into the postseason this Sunday at the Southern Conference Championship. The three-day, 54-hole event is at Moss Creek Golf Club in Hilton Head Island, S.C., Sunday through Tuesday. This is the fourth year at Moss Creek, with the Mocs capturing the previous three.
