SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Furman’s Nikki Legg and Western Carolina’s Mallory Broome have been named the Southern Conference Softball Player and Pitcher of the week, respectively, the league announced Monday. The selections are made by the Southern Conference office.

Junior Nikki Legg batted .636 with a .667 on base percentage and .818 slugging percentage in five games for the Paladins this past week.  The centerfielder went 7-for-11 at the plate and hit safely in four of Furman’s five games.  Legg, a native of Pawleys Island, S.C., collected four hits in five at-bats, including a triple, in a doubleheader split at Georgia State on Wednesday before going 3-for-6 with a walk and a stolen base versus Western Carolina this weekend.

Mallory Broome went 2-0 over the week helping Western Carolina earn a pair of doubleheader sweeps. She went 2-0 in two complete game appearances with a 0.00 ERA, not yielding an earned run in 14 innings. In the second game against Gardner-Webb, Broome did not allow an earned run, allowed just four hits and struck out five. She shut down Furman in the second game of the doubleheader against the Paladins earning her the first shutout of her career, while tossing her second straight complete game where she allowed three hits and struck out five. Over the course of the 14 innings last week, Broome gave up just four walks.

­Also receiving nominations for player of the week were Appalachian State’s Pepper Butler, College of Charleston’s Lizzy Vaughn, Elon’s Carleigh Nester, Georgia Southern’s Shelby Morrill, Samford’s Megan Dowdy, Chattanooga’s Sam Taylor and Western Carolina’s Karley Harkey.

Also nominated for pitcher of the week were Appalachian State’s Alissa Schoelkopf, College of Charleston’s Stephanie Saylors, Elon’s Kayla Caruso, Furman’s Meaghan Houston, Georgia Southern’s Brooke Red, Samford’s Caitlin Bice and Chattanooga’s Taylor Deason.
