Cnops wins UNCW Seahawk Classic, UNCG finishes third
WALLACE, N.C. – UNCG sophomore Fanny Cnops posted her first tournament victory of the season and the third of her career Sunday as she claimed the UNCW Seahawk Classic title at the River Landing Course on Sunday.
Senior Courtney Taylor recorded the best finish of her career, finishing in a tie for fourth place overall, giving the Spartans two top-four finishers.
Cnops and Taylor helped the Spartans finish in third place in the 54-hole event, which is the final tune-up prior to the Southern Conference Championships on April 14-16 in Hilton Head Island, S.C. The Spartans posted a three-round score of 921 (312-304-305) and finished just four shots off the lead of Old Dominion (917) and two behind Georgia State (919).
Cnops won the tournament as she fired a 2-over par 218 (74-72-72) to win the event by two strokes over Old Dominion’s Elizabeth Haycock (4-over par). She held the lead after the first 36 holes Saturday and clinched the victory with her second straight even-par 72 round Sunday. Her scores of 72 were the second-lowest of the entire weekend.
Cnops’ title is her first of the season and marks her sixth top-20 finish of the season. In fact, she has finished in the top 25 of all eight tournaments she has participated in this year, after winning SoCon Golfer and Freshman of the Year honors last season. This weekend’s title marked the third win of her career after winning back-to-back events last year in the Palmetto Intercollegiate and the Kiawah Island Intercollegiate.
Taylor finished with a 7-over par 223. Taylor was consistent all weekend long, as she opened with a 2-over par 74 and a 3-over par 75 Saturday before closing out the event with a 2-over par 74. The fourth-place finish surpassed her previous top honor of fifth place at the SoCon Championships her freshman year.
Freshman Sammie Buchanan finished in a tie for 31st overall with a 236. She opened the tournament with a tough first round of 81 before rebounding with scores of 76 and 79 in her final two rounds. Sophomore Berglind Bjornsdottir tied for 52nd place with a 244 (83-81-80) and freshman Lily Crane rounded out the Spartans’ lineup with a 256 (89-85-82) to finish in 64th place.
Elon ties for ninth at UNCW Seahawk Classic
WALLACE, N.C. – The Elon women's golf team posted a final-round 309 to move into a tie for ninth in the final standings of the 14-team field at the 2013 UNCW Seahawk Classic on Sunday.
Leading the way for the Maroon and Gold was Emily Brooks, who shot a 233 (81-74-78) to tie for 22nd out of 74 participants.
Just one stroke back of Brooks was Sunna Vidisdottir, who fired a final-round 77 to finish in a tie for 25th with a 234 (81-76-77).
In a tie for 27th with a 235 (78-79-78) was Martyna Mierzwa. She was followed by Diana Davis, who tied for 37th with a 238 (82-80-76).
Rounding out the Elon field was Kathryn Buckingham, who posted a 253 (89-81-83) to tie for 60th.
UNCG's Fanny Cnops won the individual medalist honors with a 218 (74-72-72).
Old Dominion earned the team title with a mark of 917 (311-305-301) and edged out Georgia State (304-314-301=919) by two strokes.
The rest of the top five included UNCG (921), UNCW (922) and Princeton (923).
Elon will next play at the Southern Conference Championships beginning on April 14 in Hilton Head Island, S.C.
Furman ninth at Rebel Intercollegiate
OXFORD, Miss. – Senior Laura Wearn carded a final-round 74 to earn a share of eighth place and help the Furman women’s golf team to a ninth-place finish in the Rebel Intercollegiate at the par-72 Ole Miss Golf Course on Sunday.
Wearn (+2), a native of Charlotte, N.C., birdied just one hole in final round action, but she played the back nine at 1-under par en route to her sixth top-10 finish of the season. Freshman Valentina Romero (+6) notched a 6-over 78 to share 19th place, while senior Alexa Rancourt (+12) posted the Paladins’ best round of the day with a 2-under 70.
Furman (+34) posted a 9-over 297 on Sunday to hold onto a ninth-place finish in the 18-team field. Coastal Carolina (-1) cruised to a nine-stroke victory over second-place Baylor (+8) with Tulane (+14), East Tennessee State (+17) and Kentucky (+22) rounding out the top five.
Jessica Alexander (-8) of Coastal Carolina edged Baylor’s Hayley Davis (-7) for individual medalist honors with a 1-under 71 on Sunday to finish at 8-under par.
Furman returns to action April 14-16, when it travels to Hilton Head Island, S.C., for the Southern Conference Women’s Golf Championship.
