Elon Competes at Duke Invitational/Liberty Invitational

DURHAM, N.C.  – Suzanne Martin threw a new school-record in the javelin throw as the Elon track and field team completed day one of competition at the Duke Invitational on Friday, April 5. Martin had a toss of 138’11” (42.35m), breaking her own school mark and finishing as the runner-up.

Kimberlyn Holt finished third overall in the hammer throw with a toss of 170’9” (52.06m) while Charlise Morgan stood just outside of the top-10 with a heave of 146’0” (44.50m).

In the 1,500-meter developmental race, Christine Pacewicz crossed the line in sixth place after clocking a time of 4:49.10. Allyson Oram was the Phoenix’s top finisher in the 1,500-meter run with a time of 4:42.42 and in 25th place.

Veronica Luedke clocked a time of 1:03.72 in the 400-meter hurdles and finished seventh overall.

DURHAM, N.C.  – Caroline McCaslin established a new school-record in the 3,000-meter steeplechase on Saturday, April 6, as the Elon track and field team completed competition at the Duke Invitational at Wallace Wade Stadium. McCaslin rank a time of 10:34.87 in the race, breaking the previous program mark by nearly 20 seconds.

McCaslin finished in the top-five of the race for Elon and was one of three Phoenix harriers in the top-10 in the event. Tereza Novotna (10:59.29) crossed the line in seventh with a new personal-record while Emily Tryon was ninth with a time of 11:02.53.

The Phoenix overall set two new school records at the two-day Duke Invitational while others established a number of new personal-records.

LYNCHBURG, Va. – Megan Kirschling cleared the bar at 5’7.25” (1.71m) in the high jump to set a school-record on Saturday, April 6, as a few members of the Elon track and field team raced at the Liberty Collegiate Invitational. Kirschling broke her own school-record in the event and claimed the title today at the Matthes-Hopkins Track Complex.

Veronica Luedke ran the 400-meter hurdles at Liberty and was third overall with a time of 1:03.44. Samantha Brown also finished in the top-10 in the event with a time of 1:07.40.

Haley Laird also joined Kirschling in the top-five in the high jump with a cleared height of 5’1.25” (1.56m). Marie Borowycz was third in the long jump with a mark of 17’0.25” (5.20m).

Charlise Morgan was fourth in the shot put with a heave of 43’7” (13.28m).

Elon returns to competition next Saturday, April 13, at the Joe Hilton Invitational in Chapel Hill, N.C.

Furman Competes at Duke Invitational

DURHAM, N.C. -- Sophomore Sinead Haughey placed second in the women’s 5,000m race to lead the Furman track and field teams Friday in the first day of the Duke Invitational at Wallace Wade Stadium in Durham, N.C.

Haughey recorded a time of 17:03.81, placing second overall and in Section A.  Also in Section A, senior Emily Wirzba garnered fourth-place with a time of 17:12.91, while junior Catherine Burton clinched seventh place in the top section after turning in a time of 17:32.14.

Freshman Bradley Gossett turned in a personal record time of 15:19.87 to pace the Paladin men in the 5,000m event, placing second in Section C, while fellow rookie Jack Miller finished tenth in Section C with a time of 15:32.99.  Sophomore Jack Morgan was 19th in the section at 15:48.26.

The Paladins took the top three places in the second heat of the men’s 1,500m.  Junior James Perez won the heat and placed fourth overall with a time of 3:54.00, followed by sophomore William Ivey, who was second in the heat and tenth overall at 3:55.94.  Senior Wilkerson Given notched a third-place finish in the heat and placed 11th overall with a time of 3:56.49.  Junior Jack Klecker took 10th in the heat and 28th overall at 4:03.01.

Junior Tyler Greathouse placed eighth in the 10,000m with a time of 31:54.20 to conclude the men’s events.

For the Furman women’s team, sophomore Emily Zizzi won her heat and finished ninth overall with a personal-best time of 4:50.60 in the 1,500m.  Sophomore McKenzie Woolley placed 14th in the event with a time of 4:52.24, while junior Erika Shaver took 16th place with a time of 4:54.29.  Junior Alexa Wilton clinched tenth place in the 400m hurdles with a time of 1:04.25.

DURHAM, N.C. -- Senior Wilkerson Given posted the top 3,000m Steeplechase time in the Southern Conference this season to lead the Furman track and field teams Saturday in the final day of the Duke Invitational at Wallace Wade Stadium in Durham, N.C.  Given placed fourth with a time of 9:08.68, while sophomore Tripp Hurt tallied seventh place in the event after turning in a time of 9:22.32.

In the 800m, sophomore William Ivey captured 14th place with a time of 1:53.89, followed by junior James Perez, who placed 15th with a time of 1:54.01.  Junior Jack Klecker turned in a time of 1:59.08 for 13th-place in the event’s developmental race.  Senior Carson Priest took 17th place in the 100m with a time of 11.02.

Senior Scott Des Marais competed in the field events for the Paladins, placing eighth in the discus with a mark of 46.81 (153-07) and 16th in the shot put with a throw of 13.54 (44-01.50).

Sophomore McKenzie Woolley led the Furman women’s team with a 22nd place finish (2:23.79) in the 800m developmental race.  The Paladin 4x100m relay team of senior Misha Holmes, junior Alexa Wilton, freshman Chrissy Reinemund, and rookie Ellie Daniel finished 12th with a time of 50.57, while the Furman 4x400m relay team of Holmes, Wilton, Daniel, and sophomore Rachel Gilbert also captured 12th place (3:59.71).

Furman will compete at the Blue Shoes Track Invitational on April 13 in Greenville.

Davidson Track & Field Competes at Duke Invitational/Terrier Relays

DURHAM, N.C. – The Davidson men’s track and field team had select runners compete in the Duke Invitational Friday in Wallace Wade Stadium.

Senior Wes Reynolds posted the top finish of the day, completing the 5000-meter run in 14 minutes, 54.25 seconds to place 10th in the ‘B’ section of the event.

Sal del Giudice led a trio of Davidson runners in the 1500-meter run with a 13th-place finish in 3:57.64. Charles Rappe took 16th in the 400-meter hurdles in 56.98 seconds.

DURHAM, N.C./SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Andrew Lantz and Vincent Weir broke a pair of Davidson distance records to lead Davidson at the Duke Invitational Saturday in Wallace Wade Stadium, while other members of the Wildcat men’s track and field team competed at the Terrier Relays hosted by Wofford.

Lantz broke his own school record in the 800-meter run for the second time this season, finishing second in 1 minute, 50.23 seconds to lead Davidson in the event. He finished the 800m in 1:50.25 in March at the Charlotte 49er Classic and now owns the top four performances in the 800m in school history. Sal del Giudice also competed in the race, finishing in 1:55.52 after competing in the 1500-meter run Friday, in which he placed 13th in 3:57.64.

Weir placed fifth in the steeplechase in 9:08.72, breaking the school record of 9:14.39 set by Ian Tupper in 2011.

Wes Reynolds posted the top finish for Davidson Friday, completing the 5000-meter run in 14 minutes, 54.25 seconds to place 10th in the ‘B’ section of the event.

At Wofford, Michael Lorentsen posted a Davidson all-time top-10 performance in the pole vault, clearing 14 feet, 3 1?4 inches (4.35m) to place second. Davidson also received top-10 finishes from Nate Faubion, who took sixth in 52.17 seconds in the 400-meter dash, and Stewart Dalton, who placed 10th in the long jump in 20-3 3?4 (6.19m). Cyrus Bahram led Davidson in the 200-meter dash in 23.35 seconds.

Davidson will next compete in the Carolina’s Cup at Winthrop Friday.

DURHAM, N.C. – A pair of runners represented the Davidson women’s track & field team on the final day of action at the Duke Invitational at Wallace Wade Stadium Saturday afternoon while other members of the team competed at the Terrier Relays, hosted by Wofford in Spartanburg.

At Duke, Olivia Menden finished 29th in the 800m run with a time of 2:16.38 for a new personal best. She was joined at the meet by Ashlyn Gruber, who took second in her section of the 400-meter dash and finished 36th overall in 1:00.49.

At the Terrier Relays, Grace Watt finished sixth in the 400-meter dash in a time of 59.45 to move into fifth place all-time with a new career best. Gracie Gordon had a strong effort in the 100-meter dash, finishing 13th overall in 12.99.

Gordon also competed in the long jump, taking 11th place. She recorded a distance of 4.83 meters.

The Wildcats will head to Rock Hill, S.C., April 12 for a final tune up at Carolina’s Cup before taking part in the 2013 Southern Conference Championships April 20-21.

College of Charleston Competes in Duke Invitational

DURHAM, N.C. – Several College of Charleston women’s track & field student-athletes recorded great improvements at the Duke Invitational this weekend.

Sophomore Hayley McMahon won her section and finished seventh overall in the 1,500-meter run in a time of 4:33.39.

Sophomore Danielle Sams made a 76 second improvement in the 10,000-meter run and she ran the race in a time of 38:29.20 and finished in 13th place.

Freshman Roshani Glover made finals and finished fifth-place in the triple jump with a mark of 11.63 meters. Also qualifying for the final in the shot put was sophomore Tiffany Sisk, who finished seventh in the event with a mark of 13.79 meters.

In the javelin, junior Christine Klinar finished fourth-place with a throw of 39.76 meters.

Up next the Cougars will compete in the Southern Conference Outdoor Championship April 20-21 at Georgia Southern.

Samford Competes in Auburn’s Tiger Track Classic

AUBURN, Ala. – With two weeks until the conference championships, Samford had a multitude of strong performances at the Tiger Track Classic, hosted by Auburn University, highlighted by a new school record by Katelyn Poole in the women’s shot put.

Poole improved on her own school record, finishing 10th in Saturday’s competition with a best distance of 43-9.75 (13.35m).  The mark further cements her spot at the top of the all-time Samford performance list and moves her into the top five in the SoCon so far this season.

Danielle Blanco improved her personal best time in the 400-meter hurdles, placing 10th in 1:01.52.  This moves her closer to the Samford school record of 1:01.15, set by Morgan Tyler in 2008.  In the men’s 1,500 meters, Brandon Hazouri claimed his spot in Samford’s all-time top ten by winning the event in 3:54.07, which ranks fifth all-time.

Samford’s two competitors in the women’s steeplechase vaulted themselves into the Samford all-time performance list as well.  Rachel Wooten placed fifth (11:16.51) while Margaret Grogan placed 13th (12:55.19), which puts them fifth and 10th all-time at Samford, respectively.  In the men’s 1,600-meter relay, the team of Henry Stevens-Carty, Josh Davies, Jonathon Bush and Cody Russell placed 11th in 3:17.92, which ranks fourth all-time at Samford.

Friday night, Ashley Cope won the open section of the women’s javelin, throwing a best distance of 121-2 (36.93m).  This is a new personal best for the junior and moves her to fifth on Samford’s all-time performance list.  She was the top Bulldog finisher in a pair of events Saturday as well, finishing 13th in the pole vault (12-3.5, 3.75m) and 12th in the 100-meter hurdles (14.11).

Other top-ten finishers during the weekend include Chenelle Terry in the high jump (2nd, 5-5.75, 1.67m), Shelby Builta in the open hammer throw (4th, 152-0, 46.33m), Holly Benson in the 1,500 meters (5th, 4:43.82), Owen Wagoner (6th, 16-0.75, 4.90m) and Ryan Cook (8th, 15-7, 4.75m) in the pole vault, Lucas Sieb in the 3,000 meters (9th, 9:03.42), Layton Dorsett in the 800 meters (10th, 1:52.46) and the men’s 400-meter relay team of Riley Hawkins, Justin Emerson, Zachary Randall and Bush (9th, 42.37).

Samford will take a week off from competition in preparation for the 2013 SoCon Outdoor Championships, beginning Saturday, April 20 and running through Sunday, April 21.  The men’s and women’s teams will look to improve on their third place finishes from last season while Cope and Wagoner will look to defend their individual titles.

Appalachian State Competes at Tiger Track Classic

AUBURN, Ala. – Raphael Rojas highlighted another strong performance as Appalachian State University men's track and field on Saturday at the Auburn Tiger Classic.

Rojas, who finished seventh in the 800-meter run, set a new personal record with a time of 1:51.25 in the event to move into seventh-place in App State history.

On the day, the Mountaineers snagged 13 top-10 finishes while eight student-athletes set new personal records.

Josh Cox grabbed second in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 9:12.90 while Michael Ellis set a new personal record and finished eighth with a time of 9:29.37.

Jared Stalling notched two top-10 performances on the weekend. The senior finished fourth in the discus throw with a toss of 50.50 meters (165-8) and 10th in the hammer throw with a mark of 56.65 meters (185-10).

Alex Taylor took 10th in the 1,500-meter run with a time of 3:49.63. A trio of distance runners set personal records in the 1,500 meters as Josh Ellis (3:57.08), Chris Garrett (3:57.49) and James Howard-Smith (4:03.42) took 21st, 24th and 34th, respectively.

Stanley Broaden took seventh in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 52.67 seconds and teamed up with Marshall McRae, Jamal Tiller and Justin Thomas to finish eighth in the 4x100-meter dash in a time of 42.28 seconds.

Tiller finished eighth in the triple jump with a leap of 14.21 meters (46-7.5) while Adedeji Adeneye set a new personal record with a mark of 13.46 meters (44-2). McRae set a new personal record in the 100-meter dash with a time of 10.93 seconds to finish 13th.

Patrick Quinn took ninth in the pole vault with a mark of 4.75 meters (15-7) while Daryl Saunders took 10th in the high jump with a leap of 2.00 meters (6-6.75). Henry Bustle rounded out the performances with a personal-best mark of 6.70 meters (21-11.75) in the long jump to take 13th.

On a the women's side, a trio of distance runners paced Appalachian State University women's track and field on Saturday at the Auburn Tiger Classic.

Amanda Hamilton, Justine Stocks and Kayla Schneider all set new personal records in the 1,500-meter run. Hamilton (4:31.84) took fourth and posted the fifth-best time in school history while Stocks (4:35.64) took eighth and notched the ninth-best time in Appalachian history. Schneider (4:41.94) grabbed 14th-place in the event.

A total of nine Mountaineers grabbed top-10 finishes at Auburn while five student-athletes set personal records.

Tatyana Bryant posted a personal-best mark of 11.66 meters (38-3.25) to finish 16th in the triple jump while Taryn Stern ran the 400-meter dash in a personal-record time of 59.57 seconds.

Cassie Crawford tied her career-record and the second-best pole vault mark in school history with a vault of 12-9.5 to finish ninth. Jocelyn Parnell (107-9) and Brittany Pierce (104-10) finished fourth and fifth, respectively, in the javelin throw.

Mary Theresa Montgomery finished seventh in the high jump with a leap of 1.62 meters (5-3.75) and Breanna Alston grabbed eighth in the 200-meters with a time of 24.00 seconds.

Alston teamed up with Bryant, Breahna Morrison and D'Shawrna McLucas to take 10th in the 4x100-meter relay with a time of 46.68 seconds and was part of the 4x400-meter relay squad, along with Stern, Morrison and Shelby Howell, that finished ninth in a time of 3:49.09.

The Mountaineers return to action when they host the Appalachian Open next weekend, the final meet before the 2013 Southern Conference Outdoor Championships.

Wofford Track and Field Wraps up Hosting Terrier Relays

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Wofford men’s and women’s track and field teams broke six school records at the Terrier Relays on Saturday afternoon at the Spartanburg High School track complex.

On the women’s side, the women’s 4x800m relay team of Niki Klasnic, Katie Kessler, Alissa Williams and Alyssa Burkert won the event and broke the school record with a time of 9:20. The same four runners also set the school record in the distance medley relay with a time of 12:47.15 to finish in first place. Sam Hughes won the 5,000 meters and set a school record with a time of 18:04.97, twenty seconds faster than the previous record. Kathleen Woods set the school record in the discus 35.4 2m good enough for ninth place. Niki Klasnic won the 1,500 meters with a time of 4:48.42, while Alissa Williams followed in second place with a 4:55.06.  Katie Kessler, Klasnic, Burkert and Emily Gothberg finished second in the 4x400m relay with a time of 4:00.29. 

On the men’s side, Tevin Johnson set the school record in the high jump with a height of 2.05m. He finished second in the event. Johnson also finished in second in the long jump with a distance of 6.95m.  Chase West took fourth in the 400 meters with a time of 51.61. 

The final meet of the season will be the Southern Conference Championships on April 20 and 21 in Statesboro, Georgia.

Georgia Southern 4X200m Relay Breaks Program Record at Florida Relays

GAINESVIILLE, Fla. – A Georgia Southern program record fell Saturday afternoon as the 4X200m Relay team of Jasmin Walker, Ebony Carter, Aarian Tipton and Alyssa Felton ran a 1:36.91 at the Pepsi Florida Relays. The Eagles competed in three relay events on the final day of collegiate competition at the Percy Beard Track at James G. Pressly Stadium, with the 4X100m Relay team of Walker, Carter, Felton and Amber Vaughn posting Georgia Southern’s best time since 2007, missing a spot in the all-time top three by only .14 seconds.

In the final women’s event of the 2013 Florida Relays, Georgia Southern’s 4X400m Relay team posted a time just .08 seconds off its season best. Dana Edwards, Aliya Parker, Vaughn and Kimberly Thomas ran a 3:52.15. Carter, Felton, Vaughn and Walker each ran legs in two of the Eagles’ three relays.

The Georgia Southern Track & Field team does not compete next weekend, but will continue to prepare for the Southern Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships to be held on campus April 20-21. Eleven women’s teams and nine men’s teams will arrive in Statesboro next week. The 2013 championships begins at 8 a.m. Saturday with 100m Dash, Long Jump, Shot Put, High Jump and 400m events for the men’s Decathlon.

UNCG’s Kemboi & Belles Turn In Career-Best Times At The Duke Invitational

DURHAM, N.C. – The UNCG men's track and field team notched two personal records Friday at the Duke Invitational at Wallace Wade Stadium.

Junior Abraham Kemboi (Eldoret, Kenya/Kipkabus) shattered his career-best time in the 5,000-meter distance as he won his heat in a time of 14:44.98. Kemboi trimmed over 18 seconds off his previous top time set last season at the Raleigh Relays in a time of 15:03.19.

Sophomore Dylan Belles (Denver, N.C./East Lincoln) finished third overall in the 10,000-meter race, turning in a personal-best time of 31.14.12. Belles surpassed his previous top time in the 10,000-meter distance by 90 seconds, set last season at the Southern Conference Championships. He turned in a time of 32:44.63 last year to win SoCon All-Freshman honors in the distance race.

Freshman Joshua Crawford (Fayetteville, N.C./South View) turned in a time of 3:57.86 in the 1,500-meter race to finish 14th overall while junior Tyron Alston (Mebane, N.C./Eastern Alamance) finished 17th in the race with a time of 3:59.16.

The Spartans placed second in the 4X800-meter relay, finishing just over a second behind Duke for the top spot. UNCG turned in a time of 7:38.95 from the foursome of Paul Katam (Eldoret, Kenya/Sacho), Alsotn, Crawford and Paul Chelimo (Chebiemit, Kenya/Chebiemit Boys School). Duke won the event with a time of 7:37.58.

The Spartans return to action next weekend with the Joe Hilton Invitational in Chapel Hill for their final tune-up before the Southern Conference Championships April 20-21 in Statesboro, Ga.

UNCG’s Saina & Jensen Post Personal-Records At Duke Invitational

DURHAM, N.C. – The UNCG women's track and field team notched three personal records at the Duke Invitational at Wallace Wade Stadium.

Freshman Lydia Saina (Eldoret, Kenya/Kapkenda Girls School) won her heat in the 5,000-meter distance with a personal record time of 17:48.05. Her time was over 36 seconds faster than her top time at the 5,000-meter distance during the indoor season and was her first attempt at the distance in the outdoor campaign.

Freshman Eira Jensen (Holmveien, Norway/Sortland VGS) also turned in a top time in the 1,500-meter race as she placed 24th overall with a time of 4:41.97. She eclipsed her previous top time by almost eight seconds as she posted a time of 4:49.67 at the Wake Forest Open earlier this season.

Junior Shannon Hall (Waldorf, Md./North Point) set a new personal-best in the 800-meter race Saturday finishing 18th overall. Hall posted a time of 2:14.57 to trim over two tenths of a second off her top time of 2:15.18.

Freshman Katherine Link (Avon Lake, Ohio/Avon Lake) turned in a time of 4:49.39 in the 1,500-meter race while classmate Katlyn Ayers (Strasburg, Va./Strasburg) finished just behind in a time of 4:59.19.

The Spartans return to action next weekend with the Joe Hilton Invitational in Chapel Hill for their final tune-up before the Southern Conference Championships April 20-21 in Statesboro, Ga.

The Citadel Bulldog Track and Field Completes Gamecock Open; Travels to Florida Relays

Charleston, S.C. – After completing a successful mid-week trip to the University of South Carolina for the Gamecock Open, The Citadel track and field teams will send a select group to the 69th Annual Pepsi Florida Relays at the Percy Beard Track at James G. Pressly Stadium.

The collegiate events take place Friday and Saturday. Action begins at 10 a.m. on both days. Gates open an hour before competition. Three-day passes for the Pepsi Florida Relays are on sale for $25. Daily admission is $12 for adults, $7 for seniors and children.

Bulldogs in the Pepsi Florida Relays

Micah Wessinger will be the lone Bulldog in the open running events as the senior qualified for the 800 and will race against some of the nation's top competition. The top 45 registered athletes qualify for the open events.

The women will bring four relay teams to the track, while the men will compete in three. The newly acquired school-record 4x100 team of Chalita Johnson, Tanisha Bethel, Nicole Levermann and Danielle Williams will attempt to top their time, while a similar team of Johnson, Bethel, Levermann and Wessinger will run the 4x200.

The women are also slated for the two medley relays as the quartet of Johnson (200), Bethel (200), Williams (400) and Wessinger (800) hit the track for the sprint.  The all-freshmen distance team of Jessica DeWitte (1200), Williams (400), Jackie Thompson (800) and Caillian Colquitt (mile)will establish a new rookie record as it will be the first time in the school's history that four freshmen will run together in the event.

The men's 4x800 team of John Gatewood, Jordan Ashley, Jordan Johnson and Greg Coggins will hit the track, while Gus Vazquez-Milan, Tevin Williams, Kevin Poland and Valian Brown will run the 4x200 and 4x100 together.

Andi Love will throw the shot put and javelin in the open women's events, while Dylan Gidado is set to heave the hammer and shot put.

Bulldogs at Wednesday's Gamecock Open

First-year javelin thrower, Capers Williamson, launched the javelin 194'11" to move into third place all-time in the event and take first place overall, while Atom Young took second in the steeplechase with a time of 9:42.49, good for seventh in Citadel history.

On the women's side, Bethel moved into third all-time in the 200, clocking in at 25.37. The women's relays continue to impress this season, posting a 4x400 time of 4:03.51 to become the fourth-best time in Bulldog history. The team consisted of Wessinger, McKee, Alex Moss and Vanessa Hope.

Freshmen Jackie Thompson (800) and Danielle Williams (100) landed on the top-10 with times of 2:27.06 and 12.83, respectively, while DeWitte moved into ninth in the 1,500 with a time of 5:11.05.

Geno Porter (131'6" – hammer), Bo Hutchinson (4:19.34 – 1,500), Mark Boozer and Ian Aikman (13'1.5" – pole vault) and Dylan Gidado (45'.25" – shotput) all nabbed second place, while Savannah Emmrich (9'6.25"- pole vault) and Ian Vandergulik (131'7" – discus) took third.

A couple of first place finishes by Danielle McKee and Kasandra Polson in the 800 and hammer throw, respectively, to go along with a men's 4x400 first place finish by Coggins, Johnson, Gatewood and Ashley rounded out the Bulldogs' successes in Columbia.
