Cnops first, UNCG tied for second at UNCW Seahawk Classic
WALLACE, N.C. – Sophomore Fanny Cnops and senior Courtney Taylor led the UNCG women’s golf team to a second-place standing in the UNCW Seahawk Classic after 36 holes Saturday at the River Landing Course. The Spartans will battle for both the team and individual titles with the final round Sunday beginning with an 8:45 a.m. shotgun start.
UNCG sits just three shots out of the top spot in the team standings after shooting a 616 through the first 36 holes of play. The Spartans posted a first-round score of 312 before rebounding with the lowest team score of the afternoon in round two, shooting a 304. UNCG is tied with Old Dominion in second place and trails only tournament host UNCW, which carded a 613 (305-308).
Cnops, the reigning Southern Conference Player of the Week, finished the first two rounds in sole possession of first place in the individual standings with a 2-over par 146 to hold a one-shot lead over Kelly Shon of Princeton and Lori Beth Adams of host UNCW.
Cnops opened the event with a 2-over par 74 in the first round to sit in fourth after 18 holes but moved into the top spot with the best score of the afternoon, firing an even-par 72 to move up three spots. She is vying for her first individual win of the season and her first since winning back-to-back events last season in the Palmetto Intercollegiate and the Kiawah Island Intercollegiate.
Taylor is just three shots out of the lead and is tied for fourth place overall at 5-over par 149. She was tied with Cnops after one round with a 2-over par 74 before posting a 3-over par 75 in round two. Taylor is shooting for her top finish of her senior campaign as she entered the year with her best showing a 10th place finish at the Mountain View Collegiate.
Freshman Sammie Buchanan sits in a tie for 25th place overall with a 13-over par 157. Buchanan started Saturday with a tough first round, firing an 81, before rebounding with a second-round tally of 176. Sophomore Berglind Bjornsdottir is tied for 50th place with a 164 and freshman Lily Crane rounds out the Spartans with a 174 to finish in 64th place.
The final round of the Seahawk Classic kicks off Sunday with an 8:45 a.m. shotgun start at the River Landing Course.
Elon 11th at UNCW Seahawk Classic
WALLACE, N.C. – Competing in its first tournament in nearly a month, the Elon women's golf team shot a 631 (322-309) over its first two rounds at the UNCW Seahawk Classic on Saturday.
The Phoenix sits 11th in the 14-team field with one round to play.
Leading the way for the Maroon and Gold was Emily Brooks, who shot a 155 (81-74) during her two rounds on Saturday. Brooks is tied for 19th out of 74 participants.
A pair of Elon golfers carded two-round marks of 157 to tie for 25th. Martyna Mierzwa notched rounds of 78 and 79 to reach her 157 while Sunna Vidisdottir posted rounds of 81 and 76.
Diana Davis will begin Sunday's final round in a tie for 43rd after shooting a 162 (82-80) over her first two rounds of action.
Finally, Kathryn Buckingham's 170 (89-81) has her tied for 60th.
UNCG's Fanny Cnops (74-72--146) is the individual leader following two rounds. She has a one-stroke lead on Princeton's Kelly Shon (72-75) and UNCW's Lori Beth Adams (73-74).
Host UNCW's 613 (305-308) has the Seahawks atop the team standings after day one. The remainder of the top five includes Old Dominion (616), UNCG (616), Princeton (617) and Georgia State (618).
Furman ninth at Rebel Intercollegiate
OXFORD, Miss. – Freshman Valentina Romero (E) carded a 1-under 71 to pace the Furman women’s golf team in second-round action on Saturday in the Rebel Intercollegiate at the par-72 Ole Miss Golf Course.
The Cali, Colombia, native birdied three holes on the round and shot a 1-under 35 on the back nine to move into a tie for seventh place with teammate Laura Wearn (E) through 36 holes. Wearn, a senior from Charlotte, N.C., matched her opening-round 72 on Friday with a second-round 72.
The Paladins (+25) posted a second-round 301 to hold onto ninth place entering the final round. Coastal Carolina (-3) holds a six-stroke lead over second-place Tulane (+3) with Baylor (+6), LSU (+9) and East Tennessee State (+10) rounding out the top five in the 18-team field.
Baylor’s Hayley Davis (-8) backed up her first-round 67 with a 69 on Saturday to hold a one-stroke lead over second-place Jessica Alexander (-7) of Coastal Carolina.
Final-round action in the Rebel Intercollegiate is set for a shotgun start on Sunday at 8 a.m. CT.
