Furman ninth at Rebel Intercollegiate

OXFORD, Miss. – The Furman women’s golf team posted a 12-over par first round to open in ninth place on Friday at the Rebel Intercollegiate at the par-72 Ole Miss Golf Course.

Senior Laura Wearn paced the Paladins and grabbed a share of 11th place with an opening-round 72.  The Charlotte, N.C., native birdied three holes on the front nine to make the turn at 3-under par, but Wearn bogeyed her final three holes en route to an even-par 72.

Freshman Valentina Romero (+1) played her final 13 holes at 1-under to fire a 73 and move into a share of 17th place, while Stephanie Carlozzi and Alexa Rancourt notched rounds of 77 and 78, respectively.

Coastal Carolina secured the first-round lead with a 4-under 284, with Baylor and Mississippi State tied for second place after shooting 289 in an 18-team field that includes six top-50 teams.

Baylor’s Hayley Davis, East Tennessee State’s Chloe Garner and Tulane’s Madison Opfer are tied for the individual lead at 5-under par.

Second-round play is set for Saturday morning with the final round of the 54-hole tournament scheduled for Sunday.
