BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford University men’s tennis team made school history Tuesday by earning a No. 3 seed in the upcoming NCAA Men’s Tennis Championship regional to be held at Mississippi State’s A.J. Pitts Tennis Centre on May 10.

No. 75-ranked Samford garnered the No. 3 seed in the four-team regional and will face No. 21-ranked Harvard in the opening round of the NCAA tournament. Match times for the opening round of play have yet to be determined. The meeting between Samford and Harvard will be the first in program history.

Host school Mississippi State, the No. 10-ranked team in the nation, will be the top-seeded team in the region.

Samford (15-9) qualified for the NCAA tournament for the second time in three seasons on April 21 by winning the SoCon tournament championship. In the final match of the four-day competition, the Bulldogs rallied for a critical 4-3 triumph over Elon.

Samford is in the midst of a four-match winning streak, dating back to April 13.

The Crimson will be making its second straight appearance in the tournament after advancing to the second round last spring. Harvard put together another solid season in 2013, finishing its dual-match schedule with an 18-5 overall mark and capturing its second straight Ivy League title with a 6-1 league record.

The dual-season opener saw the Crimson take down No. 30 Notre Dame in the ITA Kickoff Weekend and Harvard went onto capture its second straight Mission Valley Spring Classic title, knocking off No. 37 San Diego State and No. 20 Drake on its annual spring break trip.

Two seasons ago, Samford also won the SoCon tournament title and was sent to Athens, Ga., where the Bulldogs faced off against the sixth-ranked Georgia Bulldogs in an opening-round match held at the Dan Magill Tennis Center.
