Appalachian State wins Mimosa Hills Intercollegiate
MORGANTON, N.C. – Senior Yue Xu and sophomore Haley Zagoria finished second and third, respectively, as Appalachian State captured the team championship of the Mimosa Hills Intercollegiate on Tuesday afternoon at Mimosa Hills Country Club.
Xu finished the second round with a 3-over 75 to give her a tournament total of 148 (+4), two shots behind medalist Meagan Wallace of Winthrop. Zagoria was a stroke behind the senior, matching Xu’s 75 to sit alone in third place, her best finish for a tournament this season.
The duo paced the Mountaineers en route to a second-round total of 304 (+16) to give them a combined total of 610 (+34) for the two-day event. The 610 was 10 shots better than runner-up Winthrop.
Senior Lauren Smith claimed a top-five position, finishing in fifth place for her final tournament at Mimosa Hills. Smith carded a final-round 73 (+1) for a combined total of 150 (+6).
Senior Rumbidzai Masamvu turned in matching 81s for the tournament, giving her a 162 (+18), tying her for 33rd place, as freshman Lily Yatawara rounded out the Mountaineer lineup with a 169 (+25) and tying for 51st place.
Senior Mimi Burke, who played as an individual for the tournament, tied for 38th, shooting a 164 (+20).
The Mountaineers now shift their focus to the Southern Conference Championships on April 14-16 at Moss Creek Plantation in Hilton Head Island, S.C. Appalachian looks to improve on a fifth-place finish from last season’s conference championship.
Wofford ties for third at Mimosa Hills Intercollegiate
MORGANTON, N.C. - The Wofford women’s golf team finished tied for third in the Mimosa Hills Intercollegiate at the Mimosa Hills Country Club golf course Tuesday afternoon.
As a team, the Terriers posted a 314-315=629 to finish tied for third out of 12 participating teams. Appalachian State won the tournament with a 306-304=610 to finish 10 strokes ahead of second-place Winthrop (307-313=620). Jacksonville State tied with Wofford for third with a 319-310=629.
Wofford was led by Lauren Dunbar and Maegan Higgins, who finished in a five-way tie for seventh. Dunbar fired a 77-78=155, while Higgins posted a 78-77=155.
Alex Hendricks finished tied for 16th after shooting 78-79=157, Shelby Winters recorded 81-81=162, and Anne Marie Covar finished 84-83=167.
Elizabeth Thompson and Emiley Pagrabs competed as individuals for the Terriers in the tournament. Thompson posted an 84-83=167 and Pagrabs fired 82-85=167.
Winthrop’s Meagan Wallace finished as the top individual with a 75-71=146.
This was Wofford’s last event before the Southern Conference Championship, which is scheduled for April 14-16. The tournament will be played in Hilton Head Island, S.C., at the Moss Creek Golf Club’s North Course.
Western Carolina finishes fifth at Mimosa Hills Intercollegiate
MORGANTON, N.C. – Western Carolina sophomore Maria Kjelldorff advanced 15 positions in the final standings, rallying for her second consecutive top-10 individual finish of the season as the Catamounts came home in fifth at the Mimosa Hills Intercollegiate, hosted by Appalachian State and concluded Tuesday at the par-72, 6,493-yard Mimosa Hills Golf & Country Club.
Opening her second round tied for 22nd overall, Kjelldorff followed-up her opening round 80 with a 3-over par 75 on Tuesday to shoot 11-over 155. The Saltsojabden, Sweden, native rallied to finish in a five-way tie for seventh place. Coupled with sharing the individual medalist honors in WCU’s last event at the Low Country Intercollegiate, Kjelldorff has back-to-back top 10 finishes.
WCU freshman Taylor Allison slipped into a four-way tie for 12th place after shooting 81 on Tuesday for a two-day score of 156, with classmate Mariah Hopkins posting consecutive rounds of 79 to place tied for 20th at 158. Allison shot a team-low round of 75 in the opening round with Kjelldorff matching her in the second round.
Senior Michelle Bello knocked two strokes off her opening-round score, shooting 81 on Tuesday to finish tied for 38th with freshman teammate Fatima Gonzalez-Carriles. The two shot 164s in the 36-hole event and were tied with two others in the final standings.
Tournament host Appalachian State claimed the team title by 10 strokes over runner-up Winthrop, 610-to-620. Jacksonville State finished tied with Southern Conference foe Wofford at 629, one stroke ahead of WCU in fifth place overall at 630 through the two-day event.
Winthrop’s Meagan Wallace claimed individual medalist honors, posting a 1-under round of 71 on Tuesday for a 36-hole score of 146 to edge Appalachian State’s Yue Xu by two strokes at 148 and Xu’s third-place teammate, Haley Zagoria, at 149. Xu entered the final day tied with two others for first place before Wallace rallied to claim the crown.
Western Carolina now turns its attention to the 2013 Southern Conference Women’s Golf Championship, scheduled for April 14-16 on the North Course at the Moss Creek Golf Club in Hilton Head Island, S.C. The Catamounts look to improve upon their sixth-place finish from the 2012 event at the same venue.
The Citadel finishes 11th at Mimosa Hills Intercollegiate
MORGANTON, N.C. – Citadel freshman Eraina Manor fired a two-day score of 162 (+18) and finished in a four-way tie for 33rd at the Mimosa Hills Intercollegiate held at Mimosa Hills Golf & Country Club.
Manor recorded rounds of 83 and 79 to finish alongside Southern Conference competitors Shelby Winters (Wofford) and Rumbidzai Masamvu (Appalachian State).
The Citadel posted a 699 (+123) to complete the tournament 11th out of 12 participating teams. Appalachian State, the host team for the tournament, captured first place with a 610 (+34), while Winthrop (620, +44) edged Jacksonville State (629, +53) and Wofford (629, +53) who tied for third place.
TaKima Butler (94-82=176) notched a plus-32 to place 57th while Kellie Anderson (84-93=177) finished with a plus-33, one shot behind her Bulldog teammate.
Hollie Salvo (94-86=184; +40), McKenzie Duncan (94-93=187; +43) and Amelia Goodwin (100-97=197; +53) completed The Citadel scorecard.
Winthrop's Megan Wallace (75-71=146) took home individual honors after posting a 2-over-par, slightly edging Yue Xu (Appalachian State) who fired a 148 (+4).
The Dogs complete their season on April 14 when the team heads to Hilton Head, S.C., to compete in the Southern Conference tournament.
College of Charleston finishes second at Pinehurst Challenge
PINEHURST, N.C. – The College of Charleston women’s golf team turned a runner-up finish on Tuesday at the Pinehurst Challenge held at the Pinehurst Resort No. 6 Course.
The Cougars carded a three-round score of 294-303-306=903 (+39), which was four strokes shy of first-place Richmond (+35) and one better than third-place Penn State (+40).
After leading at 3-over par after 36 holes on Monday, senior Vanessa Koechli finished plus-8 for the tournament and in a three-way tie for fifth. It marked her second all-time top-five finish at the Pinehurst Challenge and third top-five finish of her career. Koechli previously placed fourth at the Nittany Lion Invitational in the fall.
Freshman Julia Neumann also made a top-10 finish with a three-round score of 225 (+9) for a five-way tie for eighth, while senior Kathy Boehm was tied for 15th (+11).
Caroline Lovette of Richmond earned individual medalist honors, shooting even par in the final round to finish at plus-3. Harin Lee of St. John’s finished in second at plus-5.
The Cougars conclude the regular season and will next travel to the 2013 Southern Conference Championship on April 14-16 in Hilton Head Island, S.C.
Samford finish fourth at Pinehurst Challenge
PINEHURST, N.C. – The Samford University women’s golf team continued its stellar play at the 2013 Pinehurst Challenge on Tuesday as the Bulldogs jumped two positions to finish fourth at the 19-team tournament hosted by College of Charleston at Pinehurst No. 6 Golf Course.
Samford concluded the two-day, 54-hole competition with a final team score of 916 (312-301-303). The Bulldogs’ fourth-place finish marked Samford’s fifth top-five performance of the 2012-13 campaign.
The Bulldogs trailed first-place Richmond (296-298-305=899) by 17 strokes. College of Charleston (294-303-306=903) and Penn State (300-303-301=904) rounded out the top three.
Individually, Samford was paced by junior standout Natalie Mitchell, who turned in an even-par 72 on Tuesday. With her dominant performance, the Bulldogs’ native of Germantown, Tenn., finished tied for fifth place out of 98 competitors. Mitchell ended the tournament with a 54-hole score of 224 (75-77-72).
Senior Anna Heim also earned a top-15 finish for Samford on Tuesday with a three-round total of 227 (80-73-74).
Heim was followed closely in Samford’s overall scoring by teammates Bailey Gray (80-76-79=235), Kayla Turner (77-80-80=237) and Emily Stallings (88-75-78=241).
The Samford University women’s golf team will next be in action Monday and Tuesday of next week as the Bulldogs play host to the 2013 Samford Intercollegiate, which will be held at the newly renovated Hoover Country Club in Birmingham, Ala.
