Mocs Claim Fourth Straight SoCon Championship

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. – Chattanooga completed a wire-to-wire win for its fourth consecutive league title and Mocs sophomore Agathe Sauzon won a sudden-death playoff to take medalist honors on Tuesday at the Southern Conference Women’s Golf Championship on Moss Creek Golf Club’s North Course.

The Mocs shot 298 Tuesday to complete their fourth straight successful title run, all of which have come at Moss Creek. Chattanooga finished the tournament with a team score of 895 (297-300-298), the second-lowest 54-hole mark in tournament history, trailing only Western Carolina’s 894 in 2003.

With the win, Chattanooga earned the Southern Conference’s automatic bid to the NCAA regionals.

Sauzon shot an even-par 72 Tuesday to move up one spot and finish with a 2-over 218 (75-71-72). College of Charleston’s Mary Chander Bryan shot a 1-under 71 Tuesday to vault from fourth into a tie with Sauzon atop the leader board, also finishing at 218 (76-71-71).

The two went to a sudden-death playoff on the par-4 hole 1 to determine the medalist, with Bryan’s 30-foot birdie putt missing by about a foot and a half. Sauzon, whose approach landed about three feet from the hole, putted in for birdie to lock up her first career title.

The individual title was Chattanooga’s third straight.

Chattanooga freshman Emily McLennan, the day-one co-leader, shot 4-over 76 Tuesday to finish in a tie for fifth at 6-over 222 (72-74-76). McLennan was voted the conference’s freshman of the year by the league’s head coaches.

The Mocs had two more scorers in the top 25, with Isabella Loza tying for 12th at 230 (77-78-75) and Jordan Britt, the 2012 medalist, tying for 16th at 232 (75-82-75).

Furman recovered from a 308 Monday to fire a 3-over 291 Tuesday, matching the tournament record set in 2006 by College of Charleston and matched by UNCG on Monday. The Paladins finished six shots back of Chattanooga at 901 (302-308-291), moving up one spot on the final day of the tournament for the runner-up finish.

Furman freshman Valentina Romero had the low round Tuesday, shooting a 3-under 69 to move her 54-hole total to 219 (73-77-69). She finished in a tie for third with day-two leader Fanny Cnops of UNCG (77-68-74), who was named the league’s player of the year for the second straight season, becoming the sixth player to earn the award multiple times.

The Paladins had three players finish in the top 10, with Laura Wearn tying for seventh at 225 (75-78-72) and Alexa Rancourt tying for ninth at 228 (76-78-74), to help edge UNCG. The Spartans shot 9-over 297 Tuesday to slip to third place, two shots back of Furman at 903 (315-291-903). Courtney Taylor joined Cnops in the top five, tying for fifth at 222 (78-72-72).

College of Charleston finished fourth at 921 (305-313-303), followed by Samford in fifth at 927 (312-309-306). Elon was sixth at 934 (315-309-310), Wofford was seventh at 936 (322-308-306), Appalachian State was eighth at 941 (313-308-320), Western Carolina was ninth at 969 (324-313-332) and Wofford was 10th at 1,035 (346-343-346).

McLennan and Neumann were joined on the all-freshman team by College of Charleston’s Louise Olsson, Elon’s Sunna Vidisdottir and Furman’s Stephanie Carlozzi.

Chattanooga’s Colette Murray was named the SoCon Coach of the Year for the third time, all of which have come in the last four seasons.
