Davidson Men’s Track & Field Takes Fifth at Carolina’s Cup
ROCK HILL, S.C. – Patrick Rollo’s win in the 800-meter run led the Davidson men’s track and field team to a fifth-place finish at the Carolina’s Cup hosted Friday by Winthrop University on Irwin Belk Track.
Rollo led a 1-2 Davidson finish in the 800m, as he won in 1 minute, 55.62 seconds and was closely followed by teammate Wesley Laytham, who crossed in 1:55.67. The duo scored 18 of Davidson’s 38 team points for the day.
The ‘Cats were out-gunned in team scoring, resting many of their top middle distance and distance runners, as host Winthrop won the meet with 150 points and was followed by Savannah State with 141. Gardner-Webb took third with 93 and was followed by The Citadel in fourth with 57 points. Radford rounded out the six-team field with 15 points.
Junior Stewart Dalton totaled eight points for Davidson, scoring six with a third-place finish in the long jump after leaping 21 feet, 11 inches (6.68m) and adding two points with a fifth-place finish in the 100-meter dash in 11.22 seconds.
Sophomore Sal del Giudice placed fourth in the 1500-meter run in 4:15.51, and freshman Aaron Forburger did the same in the 3000-meter run with a time of 9:03.51.
Freshman Charles Rappe led the ‘Cats in the 200-meter dash in 23.36 seconds to place fifth, while junior Nate Faubion led in the 400-meter dash with a sixth-place finish in 51.92 seconds. Junior Michael Lorentsen took sixth in the pole vault after clearing 13-11 1/4 (4.25m).
Davidson will next compete in the Southern Conference Outdoor Championships, Saturday, Apr. 20 and Sunday, Apr. 21, hosted by Georgia Southern.
Davidson Women’s Track Strong In Final Prep at Carolina’s Cup
ROCK HILL, S.C. – Sarah Paddon and Olivia Menden each claimed a win for the Davidson women’s track & field team at Friday’s Carolina’s Cup, hosted by Winthrop at the Irwin Belk Track. The meet served as the Wildcats’ final tune up before next week’s SoCon Championships.
Paddon earned the win in the 1,500-meter run, crossing the finish line in 4:40.16. Presley Parkes followed in fourth, clocking in at 4:45.94. Maggie Rickard rounded out the Wildcats in the event with a sixth place finish in a time of 5:08.28.
Menden earned the ‘Cats’ second triumph of the day claiming the 800-meter run just ahead of teammate Brigid Behrens as Davidson took three of the top four spots in the event. Mended finished in 2:15.56 for the win, with Behrens at her heels in a time of 2:15.87. Both times were personal records for the runners, as Behrens joined the all-time top 10 to rank third all-time behind Menden in the event. Grace Watt continued to improve, dropping nearly two seconds from last weekend’s personal best to run a 2:17.93 for fourth place.
Ashlyn Gruber ran a career-best in the 400-meter dash, moving into seventh on the program’s top-10 list. She claimed fifth in the race, running a time of 1:00.31.
Kate Kostecky picked up a third-place finish in the 400-meter hurdles, crossing the line in 1:07.90. The mark bested her previous personal record by nearly two seconds, moving her into seventh place in program history.
Representing the Wildcats in the 200-meter dash were Gruber and Gracie Gordon. Gordon ran to a fifth place finish, with her time of 26.80 placing her ninth in the all-time records. Gruber grabbed seventh in the event, running a 27.41.
A slew of Wildcats’ competed in the 3,000-meter run, led by Erin Osment’s third place finish in 10:38.72. Ali Cobb ran a time of 10:57.10 for fourth place, while Lauren Carter finished in fifth in 11:01.32. Annamarie Armistead grabbed sixth in 11:05.55, followed by Grace Carr in sixth with a mark of 11:07.79.
In the field events, Molly Marshall tied for second in the pole vault. She recorded a height of 3.05 meters. Lexie Winograd earned a seventh place ranking in the event with a height of 2.60 meters.
Gordon also competed in the long jump, picking up fifth place. She finished with a distance of 4.75 meters.
The Citadel’s Wessinger Breaks School Record in 400 as Bulldogs Complete Action at Carolina Cup
Rock Hill, S.C. – A week after shattering her own school record in the 800, senior captain Micah Wessinger broke another school record in the 400 with a time of 57.15 as the Bulldog track and field teams completed action at the Carolina Cup in Rock Hill, S.C.
The Chester, S.C., native improved on her record time that she set on the same track a season ago when she clocked in at 57.20.
Nicole Levermann, who was participating in five events to prepare for next week's conference multi-events, took first place and recorded personal bests in the high jump with a clearance of 5'5" and the javelin with a heave of 110'5".
The junior also ran a time of 15.42 in the 100 hurdles and long jumped 16'9.5".
Danielle McKee took third place in the 800 and moved into second in school history with a time of 2:16.50, while freshmen Jackie Thompson (2:25.29) and Jessica DeWitte (2:26.48) etched their names in The Citadel record book in the same event, moving into fifth and sixth, respectively.
In the field events, Andi Love threw the hammer a personal best 131'4" to move into seventh all-time, while Savannah Emmrich matched her pole vault personal best with a clearance of 10-feet.
Emmrich also recorded a triple jump mark of 31'1.25" to move into second in school history and long jumped a ninth-best distance of 14'6.75".
Mark Boozer cleared the bar at 13'11.25" in the pole vault for a season best, while Capers Williamson, who won last week's SoCon Field athlete of the week, took first place in the javelin with a distance of 171'11".
In the relays, the men's 4x100 team of Gus Vazquez-Milan, Tevin Williams, Cody Richardson and Jamaal Brantley ran their second fastest time of the season, clocking in at 42.33, while the school record holding 4x100 team of Chalita Johnson, Tanisha Bethel, Danielle Williams and Levermann posted a time of 48.38.
Darius Johnson and Nick Prestigiacomo both posted season bests in the 110 high hurdles and 400 hurdles, respectively. Geno Porter continued to improve in the hammer with a personal-best heave of 143'6".
Chattanooga Competes in Boston Moon Relays
NASHVILLE, Tenn. --- The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga men’s and women’s outdoor track and field teams had a successful day at the Tennessee State Boston Moon Relays with three titles and 19 top 10 finishes.
Senior Morgan Buchanan (Johnson City, Tenn.) claimed the top spot in the women’s 5000 meter run with a time of 20:27.98 while freshman Rebecca Greenwall (Bogart, Ga.) won the women’s 1500m run with a time of 4:44.32. Sophomore Keeley Stewart (Winchester, Tenn.) placed fourth in the event with a time of 5:00.48.
Senior Blake Olson (Pleasant View, Tenn.) outraced the field in the men’s 400 meter Hurdles with a time of 54.75, winning the event by a margin of 0.11 seconds. Freshman Iman Isang (Chattanooga, Tenn.) finished the event with a time of 1:06.10.
Junior Nathan Wanuch (Mississauga, Ontario) finished second in the men’s 1500 meter run with a time of 3:58.30 followed by sophomore Patrick O’Brien (Chattanooga, Tenn.) in fourth at 4:05.92 while freshman Matthew Marshall (Signal Mountain, Tenn.) snagged a Top 10 finish with a time of 4:12.24 in the race.
Freshman Lauren Hoard (Nashville, Tenn.) posted two Top 10 finishes placing fourth in the 100 meter Dash with a time of 12.44 and followed that with a sixth place finish in the 200m Dash at 25.89. Sophomore Amanda Sumner (Bristol, Conn.) led three runners in the 800 meter run with a fourth place finish in a time of 2:16.75. Freshman Kianna Howard (Nashville, Tenn.) placed ninth with a time of 2:22.78 and freshman Helenka Kis (Columbia, Tenn.) finished in a time of 2:37.13.
Freshman Geoff Nelson (Brentwood, Tenn.) claimed the third place spot in the 400m Dash with a time of 49.56 followed by classmate Marquis Carter (Memphis, Tenn.) in sixth with a time of 49.88. Freshman Oluwatosin Ayotunde (Ooltewah, Tenn.) finished in a time of 53.76.
In the men’s 800m Run, freshman DeQuantez Sandifer (Nashville, Tenn.) recorded a time of 2:01.45 finishing sixth while rookie Zack Darby (Knoxville, Tenn.) was 10th with a time of 2:03.56 in the event.
In the relays, the men’s A-team (Marquis Carter, Geoff Nelson, Blake Olson, DeQuantez Sandifer ) in the 4x400m placed third with a time of 3:30.94 and the B-team (Oluwatosin Ayotunde, Austin Ethridge, Iman Isang, Patrick O’Brien) was just behind in fifth with a time of 3:31.74.
In the women’s relays, the Lady Mocs team of Gabby Cader, Lauren Hoard, Ambria Reese and Sarah Washington placed fourth with a time of 50.88 in the 4x100 meter while the team of Kianna Howard, Jessica Philpott, Ambria Reese and Sarah Washington fifth with a time of 4:05.33 in the 4x400 meter.
Mountaineers Dominate Appalachian Open
BOONE, N.C. – Despite several of its top athletes taking a week off to rest before next week's Southern Conference Outdoor Championships, the Appalachian State University track and field squad dominated the Appalachian Open at Ike Belk Track on Friday.
On the men's side, the Mountaineers, who are looking for their fourth-straight SoCon Outdoor title next week, notched 15 top-three finishes, while 14 personal records were set.
Daryl Saunders finishes first on the high jump for the third time this season with a leap of 2.07 meters (6-9.5) while Darrow Goff set a personal record in the event with a mark of 1.87 meters (6-1.5).
Chris Garrett and Chris Moen finished first and second, respectively, in the 1,500 meter run as Garrett logged a time of 3:58.20 and Moen finished in 3:58.54.
The Apps also picked up a win in the 4x400-meter relay as the team of John Michael Davidson, Trey Edgerton, Chase Helton and Peter Ovendorf finished in a time of 3:25.78.
Richard Bell took fourth and posted a new personal record with a toss of 13.82 meters (45-4.25) in the shot put while taking second in the discus and third in the hammer throw.
Mason Lasater (3rd - 137-0), Nick Sansotta (4th - 129-2) and Jon Howes (5th - 127-1) all set new personal records in the discus while Howes (4th - 144-3) and Sansotta (5th - 139-7) also set new personal bests in the hammer throw.
Kenley Joseph took fourth in the 110-meter hurdles in a personal-best time of 15.51 seconds and ran a personal record 57.88 seconds in the 400-meter hurdles.
Helton ran the 400-meter dash in a personal record time of 49.59 seconds to finish second while Edgerton set a personal record in the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.86 seconds
On the women's side, the Apps grabbed 22 top-three finishes, including 11 first-place showings, as 10 personal records were broken at the final home meet of the season.
Jasmine Suydam put together one of her best performances of the season as she finished first in the shot put, discus and hammer throw. Her toss of 14.07 meters (46-2) in the shot put set a new personal best and moved her into sixth-place in App State history.
Suydam also set a new personal record in the hammer throw with a mark of 46.89 meters (152-10) and was the top competitor in the discus with a throw of 41.62 meters (136-6). In addition to Suydam, Appalachian throwers Jocelyn Parnell (2nd - 40.875) and Ana DeLeon (3rd - 38-5.0) set personal records in the shot put while Katherine Lenhart (126-2) set a personal record in the hammer throw.
Taryn Stern was dominant in winning the 800-meter run as her time of 2:20.56 put her a full seven seconds ahead of second-place Samantha Campanaro, who ran in a personal-best time of 2:27.69.
Mary Theresa Montgomery picked up a win in the high jump and set a personal record with a leap of 2.07 meters (5-5.25) while Cassie Crawford won the pole vault again with a mark of 3.72 meters (12-2.5). Fellow vaulters Meredith Wilson (11-4.5) and Sydney Cook (10-4.75) set new personal records in the event.
Caitlyn Colo came away with a win in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 12:40.26 while the team of Tatyana Bryant, Jamie Glenn, D'Shawrna McLucas and Breahna Morrison won the 4x100-meter relay with a time of 47.95 seconds. McLucas also won the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.15 while Glenn ran a personal-best 12.95 to finish fifth.
Destine' Kirkman picked up a victory in the 1,500-meter run with a time of 5:02.69 while Morrison won the 200-meter dash in 25.90 seconds.
The Mountaineers will head to Georgia Southern next weekend to take part in the SoCon Outdoor Championships, which begin on Saturday, April 20 and wrap up the following day.
Elon Records Fall as Track and Field Wraps Competition at Joe Hilton Invite
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Throwers Charlise Morgan and Suzanne Martin extended their school-records in the shot put and javelin throw, respectively, as the Elon track and field team competed at the Joe Hilton Invitational on Saturday, April 13. The Phoenix also claimed a title at the meet, its final one of the regular-season before the outdoor conference championships next weekend.
Martin had a heave of 141’7” (43.15m) in the javelin throw, breaking her own school-record in the event for the second consecutive meet and finishing as the runner-up. It is the third time this season that Martin has broken the program’s all-time javelin mark.
Morgan broke her previous school-mark in the shot put with a heave of 46’1.5” (14.06m) and was third overall. Morgan had previously set the school-record at the Wake Forest open earlier in the season.
In the 100-meter dash, Bria Turner claimed the title in the race after clocking in at 12.64. Elon had three of the top four finishers in the event as Bria Bell (12.72, 3rd) and Simone Jackson (12.72, 4th) also competed for the Phoenix.
Veronica Luedke ran the second fastest time in school-history in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:01.55 and finished second overall.
The Phoenix will gear up for the 2013 Southern Conference Outdoor Championships next weekend, April 20-21, in Statesboro, Ga.
Furman - Four Athletes Record Sub-4:00 Time In Blue Shoes Elite Mile At Blue Shoes Invitational
GREENVILLE, S.C. -- For the first time in the history of the event, multiple athletes recorded a sub-4:00 time in the Blue Shoes Elite Mile, which was held Saturday in conjunction with the 16th annual Blue Shoes Invitational at the Irwin Belk Track Complex for Track and Field and Kelsey-West Track in Greenville, S.C.
Furman Elite’s Cory Leslie won the Blue Shoes Elite Mile event, turning in a time of 3:56.18, breaking American mile record holder Alan Webb’s meet record of 3:57.83, set in 2007. Furman Elite runners claimed the top three spots in the event, as Jeff See placed second with a time of 3:57.45, and Jack Bolas claimed third at 3:58.43. Matt Elliott of Brooks also broke the 4:00 barrier, posting a time of 3:58.78 for fourth place.
Former Paladin runner Lee Gilmer finished seventh with a time of 4:05.24, followed by South Carolina resident Brandon Hudgins, who was attempting to become only the third Palmetto State resident to complete the feat. Current Paladin senior Wilkerson Given placed 12th with a time of 4:09.62, while junior James Perez finished 13th at 4:09.86.
In the women’s elite mile, Furman Elite’s Heidi Gregson captured first place with a time of 4:40.92, followed by Chrissy Supino at 4:41.34. Furman Elite’s Nicole Bush placed third after recording a time of 4:46.10. Current Paladin sophomore Sinead Haughey was the top collegiate finisher and placed fourth overall with a time of 5:03.18, followed by senior Emily Wirzba at 5:04.64. Junior Catherine Burton finished seventh at 5:08.79.
The Paladins picked up first-place finishes in three individual events at the meet. Junior Jack Klecker won the 1,500m for the second year in a row, turning in a time of 3:59.97 for the victory. Senior Scott Des Marais also was a repeat winner in the discus with a throw of 152-6. For the Furman women’s team, junior Alexa Wilton was just off the meet record pace with a winning time of 1:02.85 in the 400m hurdles. The Furman women’s 4x400m relay team also captured first place with a time of 4:03.01.
Thirteen meet records were broken at the event. Matthew Lewis of Fort Valley broke the collegiate men’s 400m hurdle record with a time of 54.48, while Shakeyla Faulk, also of Fort Valley, set a new collegiate women’s 100m standard of 12.22. Voorhees’ Priscilla Harts established a new collegiate women’s 200m record with a time of 24.28. The Fort Valley State women’s 4x100m relay team broke the record with a time of 47.24.
In the high school boys’ meet, seven records were set. Marcquel Woodward of Gainesville set records in both the 400m (48.90) and the 800m (1:58.65), and Tanner Hayes of Roswell established a new record time of 57.15 in the 400m hurdles. Two relay records were broken, as Greer’s 4x100m relay team posted a time of 42.23 and the Roswell 4x400m relay team notched a time of 3:29.36. Roswell’s Richard Delphin broke records in both the discus (167-0) and the shot put (52-2 3/4).
Leanne Zimmer of Lambert broke the previous high school girls’ record in the 800m, notching a time of 2:19.93, while Roswell’s Tracy Dorcemont established a new margin at 40’9” in the high school girls’ shot put.
