Appalachian State 6, Wofford 1
BOONE, N.C. - Ellie Linsell’s come-from-behind victory made for a thrilling afternoon at ASU Tennis Courts, where Appalachian State women’s tennis cruised to a 6-1 victory over Southern Conference foe Wofford on Saturday afternoon.
Three seniors, Jennifer Ansari, Ellie Linsell, and Gabriela Celi, were honored prior to play.
From there, the Mountaineers (14-8, 6-4 SoCon) set the stage early for the win, dropping just one point to the visiting Terriers (5-16, 1-9 SoCon) in their final match of the regular season.
Appalachian took the first two doubles slots of the afternoon with 8-2 and 8-6 scores at Nos. 1 and 2, to head into singles play with a one point advantage.
All three seniors won their individual matches. At the top of the rotation, Linsell played a gripping come-from-behind match to a 7-5, 6-1 triumph over Sarah Evans. Ansari rolled past Guinn Garcia at No. 4, 6-3, 6-0, and Celi sealed the match with a straight-set victory over Lucy Schermerhorn, 6-3, 6-3.
Clare Cox carried the momentum in an exciting tiebreak versus Audrey Conventry (6-3, 6-7, 10-4), while Jessica Thaggard recorded Appalachian’s sixth point with her 7-5, 6-1 defeat of Mareli Sanchez at No. 5.
Julia Paulson scored Wofford’s lone point at No. 3 in a 7-5, 6-4 win over Brianna Armellino.
Chattanooga 4, Samford 3
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – The road woes continued for Samford’s women’s tennis team Saturday as the Bulldogs dropped a hard-fought 4-3 decision to the Chattanooga Lady Mocs in a regular-season finale held at the UTC Tennis Courts.
With Saturday’s setback, Samford (8-14, 3-7 SoCon) concluded the 2013 campaign with an 0-11 record on the road this season. The Bulldogs’ most recent victory away from home occurred April 7, 2012, at Appalachian State, 4-3.
Chattanooga (17-4, 6-4 SoCon) swept the doubles point Saturday and then claimed singles victories on courts No. 1, No. 2 and No. 6.
Samford’s singles wins came from Stephanie N’tcha on court No. 2, 6-4, 6-0, Carita Moolman on court No. 4, 6-4, 0-6, 6-0, and Emily Mallory in the No. 5 singles contest, 3-6, 7-6(8), 1-0(5).
The Lady Mocs jumped out to a 3-1 lead Saturday and clinched their overall team victory on court No. 6 where Claire Mulyadi topped the Bulldogs’ AnnMarie Lyon, 4-6, 6-2, 6-0. Samford’s Mallory then closed out the competition with her three-set triumph on court No. 5.
Mallory, the Bulldogs’ junior native of Louisville, Ky., closed out the regular season with a team-best 13-7 record in singles play, while N’tcha improved to 12-9 this year.
College of Charleston 7, Western Carolina 0
CULLOWHEE, N.C. - Western Carolina Tennis was defeated 7-0 on Saturday by the 2013 Southern Conference Regular Season Champions, College of Charleston, in the last regular-season match of the year.
The Cougars (17-8, 9-1 SoCon) edged by the Catamounts in doubles play, winning by just one point in each match. WCU's Stacia Kissell and Shannon Bettiol lost 8-7 at the No. 1 position, while Nicole Nielly and Sara Ruiz Pajares lost 9-8 in the No. 2 match.
Kissell came out fighting in No. 1 singles play, but ultimately fell to CofC's Kelly Kambourelis 7-5, 6-2. Pajares lost 6-1, 6-0 at the No. 2 position, while Nielly was defeated in the No. 3 match 6-1, 6-2. Bettiol and Erin Maguire lost at the No. 4 and No. 5 spots.
Saturday's match also marked Senior Day for lone Catamount senior, Karen Jiménez. The Colombia native's career ended early when she sustained a knee injury during doubles play against Gardner-Webb.
Furman 7, Davidson 0
DAVIDSON, N.C. — The Davidson women’s tennis dropped a 7-0 home decision Saturday afternoon to rival Furman as part of Senior Day at the Covington Tennis Courts in women’s Southern Conference tennis action.
The Wildcats concluded their regular season with a 9-11 record and 2-8 in SoCon action. Furman finished out at 13-8 overall, winning 12 of its last 15 matches. The Paladins SoCon mark went to 8-2.
Prior to the match, Stephanie Synn, Catherine Wood and Frizzi Bschorer were honored as they played their final home matches of their careers.
Synn teamed with Nisha Crouser to give the Wildcats their lone win on the afternoon, an 8-4 victory in doubles action. The duo ran their doubles mark to 9-7 at the No. 2 spot and 5-5 in league play.
Playing both doubles and singles was Wood. The senior fell 8-3 at No. 3 doubles with Elise Held and then dropped a super tie-breaker to Amanda Murray at No. 4 singles. Wood opened the match with a 6-4 victory, but fell 6-0 in the second set and then lost 10-6 in the super tie-breaker.
Junior Bschorer, who will graduate early, fell 6-2, 6-0 in her singles match at no. 6.
Crouser went to a super tie-breaker, before falling 10-7 at No. 3 singles. The junior split her first two sets, 7-6, 4-6.
Elon 7, East Carolina 0
ELON, N.C. – On Senior Day for Briana Berne, the Elon University women’s tennis team defeated the East Carolina Pirates, 7-0, on April 13 at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center. Elon finishes the regular season with a 19-3 record heading into next week’s Southern Conference Tournament. ECU drops to 12-11 with the setback.
After trailing the Pirates, 4-1, the tandem of Jordan Johnston and Frida Jansaker stormed back to win the match, 8-4, inching Elon closer to winning the doubles point. Johnston and Jansaker improve to 20-2 on the year. Berne and Taylor Casey clinched the doubles point at No. 3, topping ECU’s Danielle Terpko and Abby Richmond. Following the clinch, the No. 2 doubles match between Elon’s Maria Camara Ruiz/Viviana Stavreva and ECU’s Melis Tanik and Yilian Zhang was called when the two teams were tied, 8-all.
Casey pushed the Phoenix out to a 2-0 lead at the No. 6 spot after an impressive 6-1, 6-0, victory over East Carolina’s Richmond. Casey improves to 3-1 on the year in singles play with the win.
At No. 4, Barbora Lazarova extended Elon’s lead to 3-0 after a 6-1, 6-2, decision versus East Carolina’s Danielle Terpko. With the win, Lazarova moves her season record to 16-8 this season.
Jansaker clinched the match win for the maroon and gold at No. 2, picking up her 20th win of the season with a 6-0, 6-4, victory over East Carolina’s Tanik.
Johnston pushed Elon out to a 5-0 lead at No. 1 after battling Neena Wanko to a 6-3, 7-6 (7-4), decision. Johnston improves to 14-9 on the season with the win.
Bryn Khoury grinded out a three-set win at No. 3 for the Phoenix, topping ECU’s Zhang, 6-2, 3-6, 10-7. Khoury joins Jansaker in Elon’s 20-win club, extending her season record to 20-4.
Berne gave Elon the sweep in a three-set thriller at No. 5, topping East Carolina’s Nicole LaDuca, 7-5, 6-7 (6-8), 10-8.
Elon is set to host the Southern Conference Tennis Championships next week, April 18-21, at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center and Burlington Tennis Center. The Phoenix will learn its seed following the conclusion of the regular season.
