Georgia Southern 6, Western Carolina 1
CULLOWHEE, N.C. -- Georgia Southern Women's Tennis finished up their regular season on a high note as they defeated SoCon rival Western Carolina 6-1 on Friday afternoon at the Catamount Athletic Complex in Cullowhee, N.C. The Eagles clinched the doubles point and won five out of six singles matches.
In doubles play, junior Paola Garrido and freshman Mary Phillips Smith defeated Stacia Kissell and Shannon Bettiol 8-3 at the No. 1 while Natalie Maffett teamed up with Stephanie Woods to win their match 8-4 on court two. Jordana Klein and Caitlin Kitchen also added a doubles win to their column as they received a default win at the No. 3.
All Eagles but one also picked up wins in singles play.
Freshman Francesca Norregaard picked up her first career win at the No. 5, clinching the match for the Eagles with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Erin Maguire.
Garrido defeated Kissell 7-5, 4-6, 10-2 on court one, while on the court next to her, Klein easily put away Sara Ruiz Pajares 6-0, 6-0, earning her fifth straight victory and team-leading 12th overall. Smith evened out her conference ledger to 5-5 after a 7-6 (5), 6-3 victory over Nicole Nielly on court three.
Kitchen added another win by default on the day, as there was no Western Carolina player to play the match planned for court six.
College of Charleston 6, Wofford 1
SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The No. 72-ranked College of Charleston women’s tennis team won its fifth consecutive match today via a 6-1 result over Southern Conference opponent Wofford at the Reeves Tennis Center.
With the victory CofC improves to 16-8 with an 8-1 conference record and clinches at least a share of the SoCon regular season title. Wofford drops to 5-15 with a 1-8 mark in the SoCon.
Doubles went according to plan for the College as all three Cougar duos managed wins. The closest match was on Court 3 where the senior duo of Irene Viana and Olivia McMillan defeated Guinn Garcia and Mareli Sanchez of the Terriers 8-6.
CofC maintained the pressure in singles, starting with sophomore Jenny Falcone (Davidson, N.C.) at the No. 4 position. Falcone overcame Wofford’s Garcia 6-2, 6-0 to put the overall match score at 2-0.
Freshman Katherine Schofield followed suit by winning her third straight singles match on Court 6. Schofield cruised to a 6-1, 6-2 victory over the Terriers’ Lucy Schermerhorn.
Freshman Brooke McAmis wrapped up the match with a win on Court 3. McAmis blanked Julia Paulson of Wofford 6-0, 6-0 to seal the overall win for the Cougars.
Charlotte 4, Davidson 3
DAVIDSON, N.C. — Playing its second-to-last match of the regular season, the Davidson women’s tennis team nearly knocked off its cross-county rival Charlotte as the ‘Cats went down to the last point before falling 4-3 Friday afternoon at the Covington Tennis Courts.
Davidson dropped to 9-10 on the season and saw its all-time record fall to 16-11 vs. the 49ers, who have won the past three straight meetings. Charlotte snapped its own two-match losing streak to improve to 10-6 overall.
The Wildcats dropped the doubles point for the first time in four matches, falling 8-1 and 8-3 at No. 1 and 3 positions, respectively. They fell to 27-27 as a team in doubles action.
Down 1-0, Davidson battled back in singles play, taking three of the six matches to a third set, but were only able to win one of the three-setters. Frizzi Bschorer picked up her fifth win of the season when she came back from dropping the first set, 7-5, to score 6-3 and 6-1 victories in the next two for the three-set win.
Stephani Synn saw her bid to win her three-set match come up empty as she was unable to hold onto a 5-1 lead in the third set vs. Lisa Grosselius at No. 3. She then had a 5-4 advantage and was two match points away from the win, but was forced into a tie-breaker where she eventually was defeated. The senior had split the first two sets, 7-5, 5-7.
Davidson’s final three-setter went down to a tie-breaker as well, only to see Elaina Cummer fall 7-4 in the tie-breaker for the 7-6 defeat at No. 2 singles. The freshman won a tie-breaker in the first set, but lost 6-1 in the second set to force the final set.
Brites Moniz-Soares and Nisha Crouser gave the Wildcats their two other points with strong straight-set victories at No. 1 and 4 singles. Moniz Soares rattled off a 6-1, 6-0 victory, while Crouser won her team-best 12th match on a 6-3, 6-3 two-setter over Tyler Baker. The junior is 12-6 on the season, with eight of the wins coming at No. 4 singles.
Davidson finishes out the regular season with a Senior Day match against rival Furman Saturday, April 13 at 1 p.m.
