Elon 4, Appalachian State 3

ELON, N.C. – The Elon University women’s tennis team closed out its Southern Conference regular season schedule with a 4-3 win over the visiting Appalachian State Mountaineers on Thursday, April 11, at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.

Elon improves to 18-3 (8-2 SoCon) with the victory, its seventh straight, while ASU drops to 13-8 (5-4 SoCon).

The Phoenix quickly took the doubles point to take a 1-0 match lead. Briana Berne and Taylor Casey claimed an 8-1 decision at No. 3 versus ASU’s Brianna Armellino and Jessica Thaggard, while Jordan Johnston and Frida Jansaker won 8-1 against Ellie Linsell and Clare Cox to clinch it. Viviana Stavreva and Maria Camara Ruiz won for good measure at No. 2, topping ASU’s Gabriela Celi and Jennifer Ansari, 8-4, to complete the sweep.

Stavreva extended Elon’s lead to 2-0 at No. 3 singles after claiming a swift 6-1, 6-1, decision versus Appalachian State’s Brianna Armellino. Stavreva improves to 11-9 on the year with the win.

Jansaker pushed the Phoenix out to a 3-0 advantage at No. 2 singles after dispatching ASU’s Cox in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2. Jansaker improves to 19-3 on the year with the win.

Bryn Khoury clinched the match win for the Phoenix at No. 4 in impressive fashion, topping Ansari in straight sets, 6-1, 7-5. Khoury trailed 3-0 in the second set, but came back strong to win it. Khoury improves to 19-4 on the year with the victory.


Furman 5, Charlotte 2

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Furman women’s tennis team clinched the doubles point and won four out of six doubles matches to down Charlotte, 5-2, Thursday at the Halton-Wagner Tennis Complex in Charlotte, N.C.

The Paladins won the top two doubles matches, as the Furman duo of senior Lauren Kline and sophomore Alex Moreno-Kaste notched a 9-7 advantage over Anna Ekelund and Lisa Grosselius at flight one, and juniors Amanda Murray and Katherine Oudin defeated Tyler Baker and Natsuko Takayanagi, 8-5, in the number two match-up.  The flight three contest that featured junior Margaret Boyette and sophomore Kelly Sullivan against Jessica Perez and Alexandra Zinn was unfinished.

Furman picked up singles wins at flights two through five.  Moreno-Kaste posted a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Takayanagi at number two, and Oudin beat Grosselius, 6-2, 7-5, at flight three.  In the flight four match-up, Murray held on to defeat Baker, 6-3, 3-6, 1-0 (10-4), while Boyette recorded a 6-3, 6-4 win against Ekelund at number five.

The 49ers scored at flight one, as Zinn bested Kline, 6-2, 6-3, and at flight six, where Iveta Guneva came from behind to defeat senior Jenny Porter, 1-6, 7-6(7-2), 1-0 (10-8). 

Furman (12-8, 7-2 SoCon) will conclude the regular season Saturday when the Paladins play at Davidson at 1 p.m.
