Outdoor Track & Field Performers of the Week

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Furman’s Wilkerson Given and The Citadel’s Capers Williamson have been named the Southern Conference’s Men’s Outdoor Track and Field Athletes of the Week for meets over last weekend. The selections are made by the league’s track and field coaches.

Running just his second steeplechase ever, Given finished fourth at the Duke Invitational with a conference-leading time of 9:08.68. The senior also holds a 3.21 GPA.

Williamson won the USC Open javelin with a toss of 194’ 11”, a personal best by 17’ and number three toss in school history. This throw ties him for second on the conference rankings. Afterwards, the sophomore traveled to the Florida Relays and was the ninth collegian with a throw of 185' 4".

Elon’s Caroline McCaslin and Western Carolina’s Alisha Bradshaw have been named the Southern Conference’s Women’s Outdoor Track and Field Athletes of the Week for meets over last weekend. The selections are made by the league’s track and field coaches.

McCaslin ran a 10:34.87 in the 3000m steeplechase at the Duke Invitational setting a new school record and placing her first on the SoCon list and 24th on the NCAA East Regional list. The freshman Prospect, Ky., native is a biology major with a 3.98 GPA.

Bradshaw took first in three events at the 2013 Wofford Terrier Relays over the weekend. The freshman won the hammer with a toss of 164-1, the discus with a throw of 146-0 and the shot put with a throw of 45-7 ¼ . Her throw in the shot was a season-best, while her throws in both the hammer and discus were just inches off of her all time PR’s.  Bradshaw currently ranks in the top two in all three of these events on the SoCon ranking list.

Men’s track honorable mention: Brandon Hairston, WCU - Hairston recorded SoCon-leading performances in both the 200m and the 400m at the Auburn Tiger Track Classic.  He recorded a 21.13 in the 200m and a 47.40 in the 400m.  Hairston also leads the SoCon in the 100m with a 10.53 and is a member of WCU's SoCon leading 4 x 100m and 4 x 400m Relays; Vincent Weir, Davidson - Weir finished 5th in the steeplechase at the Duke Invitational.  His time of 9:08.72 was a personal best by nearly 11 seconds and a new school record by about six seconds.  He finished only 0.04 seconds behind the conference leader, Wilkerson Given of Furman.

Men’s field honorable mention: Scott Demarais, Furman - Demarais had a personal best of 153' 7" in the discus at the Duke Invitational.  It was over three feet further than his previous best and is ranked second in the conference.  He is also sixth on the SoCon shot put conference list; Tevin Johnson, Wofford - Johnson placed second in the long jump (22' 9 3/4") and high jump (6' 8 3/4") at the Terrier Relays.  Both marks were personal bests and his clearance in the high jump was a school record.  He current ranking in the conference are tied for second in the high jump and fifth in the long jump; Owen Wagoner, Samford – Wagoner vaulted 16’ ¾” at the Auburn Invitational for the conference-leading mark.
