SPARTANBURG, S.C. – UNCG catcher Cambric Moye has been named the Southern Conference Player of the Week and Appalachian State right-hander Sam Agnew-Wieland has been named the SoCon Pitcher of the Week for all games March 25-31. The selections are made by the league office.
Moye hit .529 to help the Spartans to a 3-1 week that included a series win over No. 22 Georgia Southern. The junior from Goldsboro, N.C., had nine hits in four games and turned in a .556 on-base percentage.
In Tuesday’s 10-4 win over crosstown rival North Carolina A&T at NewBridge Bank Park, Moye was 4-for-4 with a double, an RBI and two runs scored.
He followed that up with a big weekend against league-leading Georgia Southern, recording hits in all three games. After a 1-for-4 showing in Thursday’s 8-4 loss, Moye was 3-for-5 with a two-out, walk-off RBI single in the bottom of the ninth inning Friday, sending the Spartans to the 5-4 win. In Saturday’s rubber game, Moye was 1-for-4 with a run scored and two driven in as the Spartans took the 10-6 victory, handing GSU its first SoCon series loss this season.
UNCG (14-13, 3-6 SoCon) returns to action Monday when it hosts North Carolina Central at 6 p.m.
Other top hitters included: William Head (Appalachian State), Brandon Murray (College of Charleston), Tyler Griffin (The Citadel), Ryan Kinsella (Elon), Tyler Avera (Georgia Southern), Drew McWhorter (Samford), Austin Neary (Western Carolina) and Josh Hyman (Wofford).
Agnew-Wieland struck out a career-high 10 batters in throwing a five-hit shutout at Wofford on Saturday. The junior from Marietta, Ga., surrendered just five singles, four of which didn’t leave the infield, and allowed just three balls out of the infield all day. Agnew-Wieland walked just two batters in the 4-0 win.
The complete-game shutout was the Mountaineers’ first since March 24, 2012, and the 10 strikeouts were the most by an Appalachian State pitcher since Ryan Arrowood fanned that many in a 1-0 win over No. 7 LSU on Feb. 25 of last season.
The Mountaineers took two of the three games against the Terriers on the weekend.
Appalachian State (14-9, 6-5 SoCon) is back on the diamond Tuesday at 3 p.m. at Eastern Kentucky.
Other top pitchers included: Nathan Helvey (College of Charleston), Zach Sherrill (The Citadel), Dylan Clark (Elon), Sam Howard (Georgia Southern), Ryan Clark (UNCG), Alex Milazzo (Samford), Preston Hatcher (Western Carolina) and Brandon Yarusi (Wofford).
