Elon tied for lead at JMU/Eagle Landing Invitational
ORANGE PARK, Fla. – Led by three rounds of par, the Elon Phoenix women's golf team found itself in a first-place tie with 36th-ranked Campbell following the first day of the JMU/Eagle Landing Invitational. Both the Phoenix and Camels shot a 293 on Friday.
Kathryn Buckingham, Emily Brooks and Martyna Mierzwa all posted rounds of 72 on the first day of the three-day event. They are all tied for sixth out of 97 participants. Mierzwa posted six birdies over her first 18 holes of the tournament.
Elon's other two golfers - Katie Partridge and Sunna Vidisdottir - are tied for 47th after scoring 77 in their first rounds.
The individual lead is shared by Mississippi State's Ally McDonald and East Carolina's Frida Gustafsson Spang at a 3-under 69.
Elon and Campbell have a three-stroke advantage over Old Dominion entering Saturday's second round. Also in the 17-team tournament are Southern Conference rivals Chattanooga (T-8th, 302), Samford (12th, 305) and Western Carolina (17th, 317).
The first Elon player will hit the course for her second round at 9:36 a.m. on Saturday at the Eagle Landing Golf Club.
Chattanooga tied for eighth JMU/Eagle Landing Invitational
ORANGE PARK, Fla. – The Chattanooga Mocs women’s golf team is tied for eighth after 18 holes at the JMU/Eagle Landing Invitational. UTC shot 302 and is tied with Stetson and East Carolina.
Freshman Emily McLennan led the way today with a 1-under par 71. It is her first under-par round as a collegian. She birdied holes five, 10 and 11 to get to 3-under par where, she stayed until a bogey on 15. She bogeyed 18 for her final tally. She is tied for fourth, two strokes behind Ally McDonald (Mississippi State) and Frida Gustafsson Spang (East Carolina).
Sophomore transfer Agathe Sauzon is next for UTC tied for 34th at 76. She is a shot ahead of Mette Kryger at 77 with Isabella Loza rounding out the counting scores with a 78. Jordan Britt had the drop score with an 80.
Two Mocs played as individuals Friday. Porsche Campbell fired a 75 (+3) to tie for 21st. Marion Duvernay tied Loza with a 78.
Campbell and Elon are the team leaders after opening with 5-over par totals of 293. Old Dominion is third at 296 with host James Madison checking in fourth at 297.
Chattanooga is first off the tee in the morning on No. 1 playing with Georgia State and Stetson. It’s a 8 a.m., first tee time with Britt leading off. She’s followed by Loza (8:08), Kryger (8:16), Sauzon (8:24) and McLennan (8:32).
Western Carolina 17th at JMU/Eagle Landing Invitational
ORANGE PARK, Fla. – Western Carolina’s women’s golf team fired an opening-round 317 to stand in 17th place after the opening round at the JMU/Eagle Landing Invitational, hosted by James Madison at the Eagle Landing Country Club.
The Catamounts were led by freshman Mariah Hopkins, who shot 3-over 75 in Friday’s opening round.
Round two is scheduled for Saturday morning with the third and final round to be held on Sunday.
Hopkins carded a pair of birdies with one bogey on her front nine, making the turn at 1-under par on Friday. The Greensboro, N.C. , native bogeyed three of her first four holes on the back nine, adding one birdie and double-bogey on the par-4 ninth to finish her round at 3-over 75.
Campbell and Southern Conference foe Elon are tied for the team lead after 18 holes, both shooting rounds of 5-over 293. Old Dominion is third, three strokes in arrears at 296 with host James Madison (297) fourth, just ahead of a two-way tie for fifth between Kennesaw State and Mississippi State at 300.
Ally McDonald of Mississippi State and East Carolina’s Frida Gustafsson Spang both turned in rounds of 3-under par 69 on Friday to lead the 97-golfer field.
Behind Hopkins, WCU sophomore Maria Kjelldorff is tied for 47th after shooting 5-over 77, with freshman Taylor Allison tied for 73rd with a 79 on Friday. Kjelldorff had five bogeys with one birdie on her round. Senior Michelle Bello (90th-t) turned in an 86 while freshman Fatima Gonzales Carriles (96th) shot 94.
The second round is scheduled for Saturday morning in Jacksonville, Fla.
Furman in 13th at Darius Rucker Intercollegiate
HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. – Furman’s Laura Wearn carded an opening-round 73 to grab a share of eighth place as the Paladins posted a 313 to hold 13th place on Friday in the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate at the par-71, 6,211-yard Long Cove Club.
The senior from Charlotte, N.C., opened her round with birdies on her first and third holes, but suffered a double-bogey on her final hole, No. 9, to finish at 2-over par. Wearn trailed first-round leader Emma Lavy (-3) of Arkansas by five strokes through 18 holes.
Furman’s Valentina Romero opened the tournament with a 79 and fellow freshman Stephanie Carlozzi tallied a 9-over 80 in round one.
The University of Arkansas (+9) grabbed a two-stroke lead over North Carolina and LSU with a 293 in a 15-team field at the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate that includes 13 of the top 50 teams in the nation.
Second-round play is scheduled for Saturday at 8:30 a.m. with final-round action set for Sunday morning.
