STANFORD, CALIF. -- No. 49 Stanford blanked Furman, 7-0, Thursday in men's tennis action at the Taube Family Tennis Stadium in Stanford, Calif.
The singles matches were played before doubles due to the threat of inclement weather. John Morrissey, ranked 45th nationally, posted a 6-2, 6-1 victory over senior Andrew Mellow in the flight one match, and #91 Nolan Paige bested junior Alex Christ, 6-4, 6-4, at number two.
In the third-seeded match, Maciek Romanowicz defeated junior Joel Cook, 6-2, 6-2, while Robert Stineman recorded a 6-1, 6-0 win versus sophomore Jacob Behal at number four. Daniel Ho slipped past freshman Matt Browne, 6-4, 7-5, in the flight five match, and Trey Strobel completed the singles sweep with a 6-2, 7-5 win over senior Robbie Aru.
The Cardinal swept the slate of doubles matches, as Denis Lin teamed with Morrissey for an 8-5 win over Cook and Mellow in the top match, and Paige and Strobel notched an 8-5 victory versus Browne and Christ at number two. In the third doubles match-up, Jamin Bell and Anthony Tsodikov defeated Behal and senior Tyler Droll, 8-2.
Furman (2-8) returns home to open Southern Conference play versus College of Charleston on March 14.
Gardner-Webb 6, Chattanooga 1
BOILING SPRINGS, S.C. - The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga men's tennis team dropped a 6-1 non-conference match at Gardner-Webb today. The Mocs fall to 6-5 overall while the Bulldogs improved to 5-3.
UTC was swept in doubles action for just the second time this year. GWU took two matches that went to tie-breakers to grab a 1-0 lead. The Mocs lost at No. 2, but freshmen John Peacey and Luke Saunders were locked in a tight bout at No. 3 with Brendan Dempsey and Benjamin Kaszas. UTC forced a breaker at 8-8, but the Bulldogs won the final frame 9-7.
With the point decided, UTC's No. 1 duo of sophomore Pavels Grigorjevs and Chris Smith (played a tie-breaker at 7-7. GWU also won that match with a 7-3 victory in the last frame.
The Mocs were without No. 1 senior Roberto Vieira who suffered an injury in yesterday's match at Davidson. The Mocs were only able to get one win in singles play, a three-setter from senior Ankit Chopra at No. 3. He took out Kaszas (4-6, 6-4, 6-4) to improve to 10-8 overall and 5-4 in spring action.
UTC returns home on Saturday, March 16, to host SoCon foe UNCG. Match time is set for 1:00 p.m. on the UTC Tennis Courts.
