SAN LUIS OBISPO, CALIF. - The Furman women's tennis team opened its Spring Break trip with a 6-0 victory over Cal Poly Wednesday at the Mustang Courts in San Luis Obispo, Calif.
The match was delayed due to rain in the area, and the teams opted to begin with singles play. The Paladins swept the singles matches, as senior Lauren Kline defeated Louise Oxnevad, 7-6, 6-4, at flight one, and junior Katherine Oudin held on for a 6-1, 4-6, 6-1 win over Jen Cornea in the number two match-up.
At flight three, sophomore Alex Moreno-Kaste opened the match with a 6-2 win in set one then gave up a 6-0 set to Alexa Lee before winning set three, 6-1. Senior Michele Stanford posted a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Kathry Webb in the fourth-seeded match, and junior Amanda Murray came from behind to defeat Ane McPike, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 at flight five. Junior Margaret Boyette rounded out the sweep for the Paladins, besting Anna Klavins, 6-2, 6-1 at number six.
Following the singles competition, the doubles matches were cancelled due to inclement weather.
Furman (3-5) continues its trip through California this week. The Paladins will play at UC Santa Barbara Thursday at 5 p.m. EST.
UNC Asheville 5, Western Carolina 2
ASHEVILLE, N.C. - The Western Carolina women's tennis team was defeated by mountain-rival UNC Asheville, 5-2, on Wednesday afternoon in a match originally scheduled for Tuesday which was moved due to inclement weather in the Asheville area.
After being swept in the doubles matches, Western Carolina came out and picked up two singles wins at the No. 1 and No. 2 spots.
Freshman Stacia Kissell defeated UNCA's Zoe Hamel in the No. 1 singles match by a score of 6-3, 6-1. Kissell tallied her second victory of the season with the win.
The lone Catamount senior - Karen Jiménez - cruised to a 6-2, 6-0 victory over the Bulldogs' Emily McNall at the No. 2 spot. The win gave Jiménez her team-leading third win. UNCA's Erickia Rivero downed Sara Ruiz Pajares 6-0, 6-1 in the No. 3 match with Amryn Soldier defeating WCU's Nicole Nielly 6-0, 6-3.
Shannon Bettiol and Erin Maguire fell in straight sets in the No. 5 and No. 6 matches by scores of 6-4, 6-4 and 6-1, 7-5, respectively.
The Catamounts return to league action this Saturday in Spartanburg as the Purple and Gold takes on Wofford at noon.
