Davidson 5, Chattanooga 2
DAVIDSON, N.C. - The Davidson men's tennis team got off to a solid start in Southern Conference play, netting a 5-2 win in their league opener at home against Chattanooga in a mid-week match at the Knobloch Tennis Center.
Davidson matched its win total all of last year, moving to 7-3 overall. The 'Cats also avenged a 4-3 defeat to the Mocs last year in the first round of the SoCon Tournament.
Chattanooga, coming off a SoCon-opening win vs. CofC, dropped to 1-1 in league play and 6-4 overall.
Senior Joe Schafer sealed up the win for the 'Cats with his sixth singles victory of the season. He dropped his first set, 6-4, but charged back for 6-2 and 6-3 wins in the next two for the fourth team point.
Schafer helped the Wildcats earn the doubles point with a hard-fought 9-8 triumph, teaming with Ethan Kallick at No. 1. Robert Lightbourn and Nicky Kunz won the other match, 8-2, at No. 3 to give them a 4-2 record.
Kunz ran his singles mark to 6-3 with a two-set win over Roberto Vieira at No. 1, 7-5, 6-1.
Chris Mark and Connor Evins tallied the Wildcats final two points with a pair of singles wins. Mark cruised to a 6-2, 6-0 victory at No. 4, while Evins split his first two sets with Jackson Tresnan, before taking home an 11-9 super tie-breaker win at No 5.
Tulane 6, College of Charleston 1
NEW ORLEANS, La. - The Tulane Green Wave knocked off the College of Charleston men's tennis team 6-1 this afternoon at the City Park Pepsi Tennis Center.
The loss drops CofC to 2-6 while the Green Wave improves to 5-4. This was the third match of the College's three-match spring break road trip.
It was a tough day for the Cougars as only sophomore Sebastian Lopez (Medellin, Colombia) emerged victorious. Lopez beat Joe Young of Tulane 6-3, 6-2 in No. 2 singles. Lopez has been a steady presence for CofC recently, winning four of his last six singles matches.
Sophomore Alon Faiman (Ramat Hasharon, Israel) had a very close match against Alex Van Cott of the Green Wave. After splitting two sets, the two played a tiebreaker all the way to 16-14 before Van Cott took the win on court five.
The Cougars have their work cut out for them as their next opponent is Southern Conference foe Davidson (7-3). The two teams will square off on Sunday, March 10 at 1:00 p.m. (ET) at the College of Charleston Tennis at Patriots Point in Mt. Pleasant, S.C.
Santa Clara 4, Furman 3
SANTA CLARA, CALIF. -- Santa Clara slipped past Furman, 4-3, Wednesday in men's tennis action at the Degheri Tennis Center in Santa Clara, Calif.
The Bronco duo of John Lamble and Tom Pham recorded an 8-3 victory over senior Andrew Mellow and junior Joel Cook at number one doubles, then Paladin senior Tyler Droll and sophomore Jacob Behal teamed up to defeat Vince Menon and Logan Chun, 8-2, at number three. In the flight two match, Ashot Khacharyan and Tomasz Soltyka held on for a 9-8 win over Furman junior Alex Chris and freshman Matt Browne to clinch the doubles point for Santa Clara.
The teams were split evenly in singles, as #66 Lamble posted a 6-3, 6-3 win over Mellow in the top spot, and Khacharyan bested Chris, 6-2, 6-3, at number two. In the flight three match-up, Pham defeated Cook, 6-2, 6-3.
Furman picked up victories in the bottom half of the lineup, as Behal notched a 7-6, 7-5 win versus Soltyka at number four, and Browne blanked Menon, 6-0, 6-0, in the fifth-seeded match. At number six, Droll handled Chun, 6-1, 6-1.
Furman (2-7) will play at Stanford Thursday at 4:30 p.m. EST.
