Neumann wins Edwin
Watts/Kiawah Island Classic, CofC second
KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. –
Freshman Julia Neumann took home individual medalist honors on the final
day of the Edwin Watts/Kiawah Island Classic held on Tuesday afternoon as the
top 15 teams played for the tournament title at Cougar Point Golf Course on the
Kiawah Island Golf Resort.
Neumann, competing in only her third collegiate tournament
for the Cougars, played even through the majority of the front nine with one
birdie on hole No. 7. She later made three bogeys and two birdies on the back
nine to finish at 2-over par in the final round, good enough for a three-round
score of 219 (+3).
One of the top 25-ranked women’s amateur golfers in Germany
prior to coming to CofC, Neumann shot a career-low round of 71 and was in a
three-way tie for first place after Monday’s second round.
She won the largest collegiate golf tournament in the
country by one stroke over Julia Roth of Central Arkansas (+4) and defending
tournament champion Fanny Cnops of UNCG and Harin Lee of St. John’s (+5).
Richmond’s Tracy Martin, who played in the top grouping with Neumann going into
the final round, placed fifth at +6 to join the other four on the all-tournament
team.
After leading the 32-team field by nine strokes on Sunday
and four strokes on Monday, the Cougars carded a three-round total of 902 (+38)
and were edged by No. 36-ranked Campbell in the team competition. CofC’s
starters had trouble on the back nine, while Campbell matched its second-round
total on the final day with a 299 to win the tournament by three strokes with
an 899 (+35).
Senior Kathy Boehm made a top-25 finish with a three-round
score of 76-77-75=228 (+12) for a five-way tie for 21st, while freshman Mary
Chandler Bryan, who competed as an individual, tied for 13th at 10-over for the
tournament – her second top 15 finish of her rookie campaign.
CofC will next compete at the Mountain View Collegiate on
March 15-16 in Tucson, Ariz.
UNCG finishes fifth
at Edwin Watts/Kiawah Island Classic
KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. –
The UNCG women’s golf team closed out the 33rd annual Edwin Watts/Kiawah Island
Classic on Tuesday with a score of 304 in round three to move up to fifth place
overall in the standings on the Cougar Point Golf Course. Sophomore Fanny Cnops
ended the tournament in third place overall with a 5-over par score, earning all-tournament
accolades for the second straight year at the event.
Cnops, the reigning Kiawah Island Classic champion, came
within six holes of winning her second straight title at the event. She held
the overall lead after 12 holes played in the final round, boasting a 1-under
par advantage in the round before posting a bogey on No. 16 and an
uncharacteristic triple-bogey on No. 17 to fall out of the lead. She maintained
par over the final four holes to finish the day 3-over par, carding a 221
(77-69-75), two shots back of leader Julie Neumann of College of Charleston.
UNCG, which opened the tournament in 13th place after round
one, moved up eight spots to finish in the top five with a score of 917
(314-299-304). The Spartans were just three shots out of fourth place, held by
Richmond, while also trailing tournament winner Campbell (899), College of
Charleston (902) and Troy (906).
Senior Courtney Taylor continued her climb up the
leaderboard as well Tuesday as she finished with her best round of the
tournament, firing a 2-over par 74. Taylor finished the 54-hole event in a tie
for 21st with a 228 (77-77-74), including posting her first career hole-in-one
during the opening round.
Freshman Sammie Buchanan recorded a 35th-place
finish in the event with a score of 232 (76-77-79). Sophomore Berglind
Bjornsdottir posted her second straight 4-over par 76 to close out the event in
62nd place with a 236 (84-76-76).
The Spartans return to action March 15-16 as they travel to
Tucson, Ariz., for the Mountain View Collegiate hosted by Kansas State at the
Mountain View Country Club.
Elon finishes eighth
at Edwin Watts/Kiawah Island Classic
KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. –
A final-round mark of 307 lifted the Elon Phoenix women's golf team to an
eighth-place finish at the 2013 Edwin Watts/Kiawah Island Classic on
Tuesday. The Maroon and Gold ended the
tournament with a score of 923 (310-306-307).
Elon's top finisher was Martyna Mierzwa, who posted a
three-round score of 228 (76-78-74) to tie for 21st out of 172 participants.
Three strokes back in a tie for 31st was Kathryn
Buckingham. She shot a 231
(75-77-79). With a mark of 233
(78-79-76), Sunna Vidisdottir ended the event in a tie for 41st.
The final two Elon golfers in the field were Emily Brooks
and Katie Partridge. Brooks tied for
52nd with a score of 235 (82-72-81), while Partridge placed in a tie for 77th
with a tally of 238 (81-79-78).
College of Charleston's Julia Neumann edged out Central
Arkansas' Julia Roth by one stroke for the individual title. Neumann concluded the final round with a
score of 219 (74-71-74).
Campbell took home the team title with a mark of 899. Host College of Charleston placed second with
a 902. The rest of the top five
consisted of Troy (906), Richmond (914) and UNCG (917).
Separating Elon from the top five were Daytona State and
Oral Roberts, which both finished at 921.
The Phoenix will not take much time off and will return to
the links at the JMU/Eagle Landing Invitational in Orange Park, Fla., March
8-10.
Samford finishes
eighth at Edwin Watts/Kiawah Island Classic
KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. –
The Samford University women’s golf team turned in its best round of the week
Tuesday as the Bulldogs earned an 11th-place finish out of 33 teams at the Edwin
Watts/Kiawah Island Classis being hosted by the College of Charleston.
Samford carded a third-round score of 305 on Tuesday and
finished the 54-hole tournament with a total team score of 930 (311-314-305).
The Bulldogs concluded the three-day competition just 10 strokes out of sixth
place.
Individually, Samford’s Natalie Mitchell fired a 54-hole
score of 226 (76-76-74) and finished 13th in the 170-competitor
field. The Bulldogs’ junior from Germantown, Tenn., closed out the event with a
third-round score of 2-over par 74.
Samford’s Bailey Gray and Anna Heim carded identical 54-hole
marks of 236 (77-81-78), while Emily Stallings followed closely at 237
(86-76-75). Junior Alex Jasper rounded out the Bulldogs’ scoring with a
three-round score of 242 (81-81-80).
The 2013 Edwin Watts Kiawah Island Classic consisted of 18
holes each Sunday, Monday and Tuesday. The 32-team competition was held at both
the Cougar Point Golf Course and the Oak Point Golf Course.
Campbell earned the team title of the three-day event
Tuesday with a final score of 899 (301-299-299). Individually, College of
Charleston’s Julia Neumann claimed individual medalist honors as she posted a 54-hole
score of 3-over par 219.
The Samford University women’s golf team will next be in
action March 8-10, as the Bulldogs head to the 2013 James Madison Classic,
which will be held at the pristine Eagle Landing Golf Course in Orange Park,
Fla.
Wofford finishes tied
for 15th at Edwin Watts/Kiawah Island Classic
KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. –
The Wofford women’s golf team finished tied for 15th out of 32 teams at the Edwin
Watts/Kiawah Island Intercollegiate at the Oak Point and Cougar Point golf
courses after 54 holes of play.
Wofford fired a 314-316-313=943 to finished tied with
Florida Gulf Coast, 311-320-312=943, for 15th place. Campbell won the tournament with a
310-299-299=899, with the College of Charleston, 292-304-306=902, in second and
Troy, 302-308-296=906, in third.
Lauren Dunbar led the Terriers with a 78-78-75=231, while
Alex Hendricks carded an 81-76-78=235.
Anne Marie Covar signed her scorecard with a 77-79-82=238, and Elizabeth
Thompson shot a 78-83-80=241. Maegan
Higgins was the last Terrier with an 81-83-80=244.
Julia Neumann of the College of Charleston was the
individual medalist with a 74-71-74=219.
Wofford will play at the C&F Bank Intercollegiate in
Hilton Head, S.C. for its next tournament.
The Citadel ties for
30th at Edwin Watts/Kiawah Island Classic
KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. –
Freshman Eraina Manor led all Citadel players with a three-round total of 245
(+29) at the Edwin Watts/Kiawah Island Classic. She topped a Bulldogs team that
finished with a three-day total of 1,017 (337-346-334, +153), and tied with
Fairleigh Dickinson for 30th place.
Manor (78-85-82=245) finished six shots in front of teammate
TaKima Butler, who fired a 251 (85-83-83; +35). Manor was the lone Citadel
participant to post a round of 70 at the courses of Oak Point Golf Club.
The Bulldogs also counted scorecards from Kellie Anderson
(85-88-80=253), who tied for 140th, Hollie Salvo (89-90-89=268) and Amelia
Goodwin (95-0-0=WD).
Big South Conference representative Campbell captured the
event with an 899 (+35), followed by host College of Charleston (902, +38) and
Troy (906, +42).
Top individual honors went to CofC's Julia Neumann, who
fired a 3-over-par (219) to edge Julia Roth (Central Arkansas) by one stroke.
Third place was shared by UNCG's Fanny Cnops and Harin Lee (St. John's) who
finished with a 5-over-par (221).
The Citadel makes its return to the course on March 24, when
the team heads to Hilton Head for the Lowcountry Intercollegiate, hosted by
Wofford.
