Appalachian State 7, Wofford 6

BOONE, N.C. – Noah Holmes’ walk-off double scored shortstop Will Callaway to propel Appalachian State over Wofford 7-6 in the rubber-game of a three-game Southern Conference series Sunday afternoon at Smith Stadium.

Holmes, who finished the game 2-for-4, found the gap in left-center and scored Callaway, who reached on a Wofford error to lead off the inning, giving the Mountaineers (14-9, 6-5 SoCon) the series win.

Appalachian State starter Jeffrey Springs tossed four innings, giving up just two hits and three earned runs. Springs gave way to Taylor Thurber in the fifth, as Thurber recorded 3 1/3 innings, with three runs on four hits. Josh Wilson earned the victory, going 1 2/3 innings and striking out one.

The Mountaineers outhit Wofford (13-16, 4-8 SoCon) 10-7 for the day, highlighted by William Head’s three-hit performance. Head also tallied two runs, which tied for the team high with second baseman Hector Crespo, who added his second home run of the season in the bottom of the fourth to give App State a 5-3 lead.

Dillon Dobson and Jaylin Davis joined Holmes with doubles on the afternoon, as Dobson drove in two runs with his double in the third inning.

In the fifth inning, Gabe Dimock, who replaced Josh Zumbrook after he suffered an ankle injury trying to beat out a groundball in the fourth inning, recorded his first collegiate hit and scored Davis after his leadoff double. Dimock finished the game 1-for-2 and threw out a runner in the sixth.

The Terriers’ lineup was highlighted by Josh Hyman, the lone Wofford hitter with a multi-hit game, as he finished 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBIs. Eric Eck picked up his second loss of the season, giving up two hits in an inning of work.

Appalachian State returns to the field on Tuesday as it travels to Eastern Kentucky for a nonconference showdown. First pitch from EKU is set for 3 p.m. The Terriers will play at Winthrop on Tuesday and at Auburn on Wednesday before beginning a three-game series at Samford on Friday.
