STATESBORO, Ga. – The No. 70 nationally-ranked UNCG women’s tennis team advanced its conference record to 6-1 after beating Georgia Southern, 4-3 Saturday, March 30 in Statesboro, Ga. The Blue and Gold hold an overall 10-5 record this season.
The Spartans snatched the doubles point after winning all three matches against the Eagles.
At No 3, sophomore Stephanie Falcon and junior Dilara Yurtkuran took down Jordana Klein and Caitlin Kitchen, 8-3.
Senior Annette Rios teamed up with sophomore Kayla Gammie at No. 2 to win a close 9-7 match against Natalie Maffett and Stephanie Woods.
Seniors Niltooli Wilkins and Alex Whitehead battled Paola Garrido and Mary Phillips Smith at No. 1 and came out on top, 9-7.
In singles play, Falcon picked up an easy win at No. 5 against Maffett, 6-0, 6-2, before Gammie won in a quick two sets, 6-2, 6-2 against Francisca Norregaard at No. 6.
Whitehead clinched the match at No. 3 singles when she beat Woods, 6-4, 7-5.
Wilkins dropped her match at No. 1 to Garrido, 6-1, 7-5, before Yurtkuran fell to Klein at No. 2, 6-4, 6-1.
Rios fought in three sets, but lost 4-6, 7-5, 10-6 to Smith.
Chattanooga 7, Davidson 0
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. — In the midst of playing five matches in a nine-day span, the Davidson women’s tennis team dropped its second of the five matches they will play with a 7-0 defeat at Chattanooga Saturday morning in Southern Conference action.
Davidson suffered its sixth loss in a row, falling to under .500 at 7-8 overall and are 0-6 in league matches. Chattanooga, which just fell out of the Top-75 of the ITA ranks after being ranked 67th last week, improved to 14-3 overall and 4-3 in league play.
The Mocs swept all three doubles matches by the scores of 8-1, 8-3 and 8-3 at the three spots.
Davidson battled in singles play, but were not able to score a team point. The ‘Cats dropped five of the six singles spots in straight sets. Stephani Synn, who gave Davidson a point the day before at Samford, pushed Kayla Jones to a third set by taking the second one, 6-4. Jones came back and netted a 6-2 win over the senior to finish the match off after she earned a 6-1 set-one win.
Nisha Crouser went to a tie-breaker in the second set against Alexa Flynn at No. 4, but dropped the tie-breaker 7-4. She lost the first set by the score of 6-1.
Fellow classmate Brites Moniz-Soares played well at No. 1 singles, netting eight games, but fell 6-3, 7-5 to Jenna Nurik.
