Georgia Southern 4, Furman 3
STATESBORO, Ga. – Georgia Southern clinched the doubles point and won three out of the top four singles matches to down Furman, 4-3, Tuesday afternoon at the Hanner Tennis Complex in Statesboro, Ga.
The Paladins grabbed a quick 8-3 win at flight three doubles, as senior Andrew Mellow and sophomore Luke Synn topped Alex Doherty and Marco Osorio. The Eagles evened the match when Andrew Drowsky and Rayana Djouad teamed up for an 8-3 victory over sophomore Jacob Behal and senior Tyler Droll in the number two match, then Matthijs Verdam and Oliver Webb clinched the opening point for Georgia Southern with an 8-5 advantage over junior Alex Christ and freshman Matt Brown in the top contest.
In singles action, Droll notched a quick 6-4, 6-3 win over Rafael Racy at number six to put the Paladins on the board, but Djoud bested Christ, 6-2, 7-6(7-5) in the flight two match-up to give the Eagles a 2-1 advantage. A. Codina Sala increased Georgia Southern’s lead to 3-1 with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Behal at number four.
Synn kept Furman in the match, defeating Marco Osorio 6-2, 6-4 at flight five to cut the deficit to 3-2, but Dromsky recorded a 6-1, 7-5 win over Mellow in the top spot to clinch the match for the Eagles. At number three, Brown posted a 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 victory versus Verdam in the final match of the day.
Davidson 4, Wofford 3
SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford men’s tennis team was defeated by Davidson, 4-3, in a hard fought match on a cold and windy Tuesday afternoon. The Terriers fall to 3-9 for the year and 1-4 in Southern Conference play, while the Wildcats improve to 10-6 and 4-3 in conference action.
On the doubles side, all three match-ups were extremely close as both teams held the lead at least once in every match. Davidson’s Joe Schafer and Ethan Kallick used a strong finish to top Jackson Keith and Tom Wood (8-5) at No. 2. The Wildcats then clinched the doubles point after Connor Evins and Nicky Kunz squeaked by Graham Duncan and Parks Thompson (9-7) in a very close match-up in the No. 3 spot. At the No. 1 position, Wofford’s Rob Galloway and Walker Heffron out fought Chris Mark and Kevin Moore to claim the 9-8 win.
In singles action, the Terriers tied the score at one after Galloway cruised past Kunz in straight sets (6-2, 6-0) at the No. 1 position. Davidson won the next three matches clinch the overall victory. First, Schafer overpowered Drew Superstein (6-1, 6-3) in the No. 2 spot. Next, Mark bested Keith in a back and forth match (6-4, 6-2) at No. 3. Then, Evins surged past Wood (6-4, 6-2) despite a slow start in the No. 5 spot.
However, despite the result decided, the Terriers won the final two match-ups. First, Heffron defeated Lightbourn in straight sets (6-3, 6-4) at the No. 4 position. Then in the day’s final match, Duncan overcame a first-set loss to secure the win. Moore came from behind to take set one 6-4, but Duncan responded with a decisive 6-2 victory in set two. In the final set, both players went back and forth until the score was tied at seven. Then in a close tie-breaker, Duncan won the final three points to secure the win, 7-5.
