GREENSBORO, N.C. – The No. 65 nationally ranked UNCG women’s tennis team added another victory to its perfect 5-0 SoCon record when they beat Davidson Sunday, March 24 at the Piedmont Indoor Tennis Center.
The Spartans swept in doubles when they went 3-0 to win the match point.
Seniors Niltooli Wilkins and Alex Whitehead defeated Brites Moniz-Soares and Elaina Cummer at No. 1, 8-5.
Senior Annette Rios teamed up with sophomore Kayla Gammie at No. 2 to win 8-5 against Stephani Synn and Nisha Crouser.
At No 3, sophomore Stephanie Falcon and junior Dilara Yurtkuran beat Catherine Wood and Frizzi Bschorer, 8-4.
In singles play, Wilkins won an easy 6-1, 6-4 match at No. 1 against Moniz-Soares, while Yurtkuran made a comeback after being down in the first set to take down Cummer at No. 2, 2-6, 6-0, 6-3.
Whitehead also fell in the first set before she won the next two sets to win her match at No. 3 against Synn, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4.
Rios fought in three sets at No. 4 but fell to Crouser, 4-6, 6-2, 6-3.
At No. 5, Falcon beat Bschorer in a quick 6-4, 6-0 match, while Gammie picked up an easy 6-2, 6-2 victory against Blake Nickles.
Samford 7, Wofford 0
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford University women’s tennis team cruised to a dominating 7-0 home victory against the Wofford Terriers on Sunday in a Southern Conference matchup held at the Samford Tennis Center.
With the win, Samford (7-10, 2-4 SoCon) improved to 7-3 at home this season and snapped a six-match losing streak dating back to March. 3. Samford also posted its second 7-0 triumph play in conference play this year. In their March 3 triumph, the Bulldogs reeled off a similar 7-0 victory over Western Carolina.
Wofford (5-10, 1-4 SoCon) suffered its sixth straight defeat Sunday and moved to 1-5 in road matches. Since earning a 5-2 victory over Mercer on March 10, the Terriers have dropped consecutive losses to Presbyterian, Charleston Southern, Charlotte, Furman, Chattanooga and Samford.
The Bulldogs swept Sunday’s doubles competition and then received singles victories from Kristin Lewis, Stephanie N’tcha, Jessica Northcutt, Carita Moolman, Emily Mallory and AnnMarie Lyon to record the lopsided 7-0 triumph. Samford won in straight sets on five of the six courts, while Northcutt tallied a 4-6, 6-4, 1-0 (4) win on court No. 3.
Northcutt, the Bulldogs’ talented true freshman from Duluth, Ga., improved her singles record on the season to 5-6 on Sunday. Samford’s leaders in dual-match play this year are Mallory (10-4), N’tcha (10-5) and Lewis (9-7).
In doubles play, the Bulldogs’ tandem comprised of Adri Lochner and Moolman improved its team-best record to 10-5 with a 9-7 victory over Wofford’s combination of Lucy Schermerhorn and Julia Paulson, 9-7.
Furman 4, Chattanooga 3
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – Sophomore Kelly Sullivan battled back from a 4-1 deficit in the second set to defeat Claire Mulyadi, 7-6, 7-6, at flight six singles to lead the Furman women’s tennis team to a 4-3 victory over Chattanooga Sunday at the Girls Preparatory School courts in Chattanooga, Tenn.
Down 4-1 in set two, Sullivan won four-straight games to take a 5-4 advantage, but Mulyadi put together two-consecutive wins for a 6-5 lead. Sullivan won the next game to force a tiebreaker then held on for the victory, giving the Paladins a 6-0 record in singles tiebreakers for the day.
Furman won two out of three doubles matches to win the opening point. Senior Lauren Kline and sophomore Alex Moreno-Kaste posted a quick 8-5 victory over Kaylene Chadwell and Kayla Jones in the top flight. Kelsey Coots and Alexa Flynn then won a tie-breaker for a 9-8 advantage versus junior Amanda Murray and senior Michele Stanford in the number two contest, setting up the decisive match at flight three. Junior Margaret Boyette and sophomore Kelly Sullivan came from behind for a 9-8 win over Clair Mulyadi and Jovana Pecovski at number three to clinch the point.
In singles action, Chadwell topped Moreno-Kaste, 6-2, 6-2, at number two to put the Mocs on the board, then Flynn came from behind for a 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 victory over Stanford at flight four to increase Chattanooga’s advantage to 2-1. Kline posted a 7-6, 7-6 win versus Jenna Nurik in the top contest to knot the score at 2-all, before junior Katherine Oudin came from behind to defeat Jones, 7-6, 6-0, 7-6, at number three to give the Paladins a 3-2 team advantage. Coots bested Murray, 6-2, 6-3, in the flight five match-up to tie the score at 3-3 and set up the decisive match at number six.
College of Charleston 5, Appalachian State 2
BOONE, N.C. – The No. 71-ranked College of Charleston women’s tennis team won its fourth match in a row this afternoon via a 5-2 score over Southern Conference opponent Appalachian State at the Yonahlossee Racquet Club.
With the win CofC remains a perfect 3-0 in conference play with an 11-7 overall record. App State now sits at 3-2 in the SoCon with an 11-6 overall mark.
The Cougars won all three doubles matches this afternoon, the closest contest being an 8-6 victory by senior Irene Viana and freshman Katherine Schofield over Ellie Linsell and Mackensie LaSure of ASU on Court 1.
In singles, senior Christin Newman won her sixth match in a row when she defeated Linsell 6-4, 6-1 on Court 1.
Sophomore Jenny Falcone won her second singles match in her home state this weekend via a 6-2, 6-3 score over Brianna Armellino of the Mountaineers on Court 3.
Sophomore Samantha Maddox also posted a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Jennifer Ansari of App State on Court 4.
Schofield rounded out the day with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Jessica Thaggard of ASU on Court 5.
