College of Charleston 7, Davidson 0

DAVIDSON, N.C. – The College of Charleston women’s tennis team continued its winning ways with a 7-0 sweep of Davidson in Southern Conference action held on Saturday afternoon at the Covington Tennis Courts.

The Cougars (10-7, 2-0 SoCon) have now won three in a row and remain undefeated in league play. CofC won five of the six singles matches in straight sets and two of its three doubles pro-sets by five games or better.

Senior Christin Newman led the way with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Davidson’s Brites Moniz-Soares at the top of the singles order, while junior Kelly Kambourelis won a three-set decision over Elaina Cummer, 6-4, 1-6, 6-1, at No. 2 singles.

Sophomore Jenny Falcone played in front of her hometown crowd and defeated Nisha Crouser, 6-4, 7-6, at the No. 3 line. She also combined with Kambourelis for a No. 2 doubles victory over Crouser and Stephani Synn, 8-1.

The closest the Wildcats (7-5, 0-3 SoCon) came against the four-time defending league champions was a two-game, 9-7 loss at No. 1 doubles to senior Irene Viana and freshman Katherine Schofield. The Cougars’ top tandem improved to a team-best 7-5 on the season.

 

Chattanooga 6, Wofford 1

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – The Wofford women’s tennis team was defeated on the road by Chattanooga 6-1 Saturday afternoon at the UTC Tennis Courts.  The Terriers fall to 5-9 on the year and 1-3 in the Southern Conference while the Lady Mocs improve to 13-2 this season and 3-2 in conference play.

In doubles action, Chattanooga won all three matches to claim the doubles point.  First, Alexa Flynn and Kelsey Coots topped Sarah Evans and Mareli Sanchez (8-0) at the No. 2 position.  In the No. 3 spot, Wofford’s Othilia Lindqvist and Emily Przystawski battled Claire Mulyadi and Jovana Pecovski but eventually fell (8-6).  Then in the final match-up, Kaylene Chadwell and Kayla Jones defeated Julia Paulson and Lucy Schermerhorn (8-3) to complete the sweep.

On the singles side, the Lady Mocs started fast, winning the first set in all six matches in route to five straight set wins.  First, Coots handled Przystawski in (6-0, 6-0) at No. 5 to double Chattanooga’s lead.  Then in the No. 3 spot, Sanchez fell to Jones (6-2, 6-0).  The Lady Mocs clinched the victory after Flynn defeated Schermerhorn (6-4, 6-0) at the No. 4 position.  The next two matches had the same result, as Nurik defeated Paulson (6-0, 6-2) in the No. 2 spot, and Mulyadi topped Lindqvist (6-2, 6-3) at the No. 6.  Wofford’s loan point came when Chadwell retired to Evans in the second set.

 

Furman 6, Samford 1

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Furman women’s tennis team remained undefeated in league play with a 6-1 win over Samford Saturday at the Samford Tennis Center in Birmingham, Ala. The win, which was the Paladins’ sixth in its last seven matches, extends Furman’s winning streak to three matches.

The Paladins won two out of three doubles matches to clinch the opening point. Senior Michele Stanford and junior Amanda Murray topped Carita Moolman and Adri Lochner, 8-6, at flight two, and juniors Katherine Oudin and Margaret Boyette held on to defeat Jessica Northcutt and Emily Mallory, 9-8, at number three. The top match remained unfinished with Furman senior Lauren Kline and sophomore Alex Moreno-Kaste knotted at 8-all with Kristin Lewis and Stephanie N’tcha.

In singles play, Furman was victorious in five of six matches for the team win. Kline came from behind for a 1-6, 6-3, 6-3 win over Lewis at flight one, and Moreno-Kate outlasted N’tcha, 6-4, 3-6, 6-1 in the number two match-up. Oudin bested Northcutt, 6-4, 6-3, for a win at flight three, and Stanford posted a win at flight four, defeating Moolman, 6-1, 7-5. In the number six contest, Boyette notched a 6-4, 6-3 advantage versus AnnMarie Lyon.

The Bulldogs lone win came at number five singles, where Mallory defeated Murray, 6-2, 5-7, 1-0 (10-8).
