Elon 5, Chattanooga 2
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – The Elon University men’s tennis team came up with a key road win on Saturday, March 23, claiming a 5-2 win at Chattanooga. Winners of six straight matches, Elon improves to 10-4 with the victory and 5-0 in Southern Conference play.
The Phoenix won all three doubles matches to take an early 1-0 advantage. The 38th-ranked tandem of Cameron Silverman and Stefan Fortmann claimed an 8-2 win against John Peacey and Ankit Chopra to give Elon momentum. Brian Kowalski and Robert Lindgren clinched the point, topping Chattanooga’s Chris Smith and Robert Vieira, 8-5, at No. 2. Juan Madrid and Jordan Kaufman also won in doubles against the Mocs.
Kaufman extended Elon’s lead to 2-0 at No. 4 singles after recording a 6-3, 6-4, decision versus Chris Smith. After the Mocs took the point at No. 3 singles to limit Elon to a 2-1 edge, Silverman wrapped things up at No. 1 singles with a 7-5, 6-3, win against Vieira to extend the maroon and gold’s lead to 3-1. Silverman, ranked 38th in the nation in singles, improves to 10-4 on the year and has won his last six matches.
Following a Mocs win at No. 2 to limit the Phoenix to a 3-2 advantage, the Phoenix extended its lead at No. 6 courtesy of Madrid to clinch the match win. Madrid registered a 6-2, 6-2, victory against Chattanooga’s Pavels Grigorjevs to push Elon out to a 4-2 lead.
Kowalski was the final player to finish for the Phoenix, claiming a three-set win, 4-6, 6-3, 10-8, against the Mocs’ Jackson Tresnan at No. 5 singles.
Davidson 5, Georgia Southern 2
DAVIDSON, N.C. — Kevin Moore, Chris Mark and Connor Evins won both their singles and doubles matches in leading the Wildcat men’s tennis team to a 5-2 Southern Conference victory at home vs. Georgia Southern Saturday afternoon at the Knobloch Indoor Tennis Center.
The trio helped Davidson (9-6, 3-3 SoCon) snap a three-match losing streak. The Wildcats won for the 13th time against the Eagles (7-6, 3-2 SoCon) in the past 22 matches dating back to 1988.
The senior pair of Moore and Mark picked an 8-3 win at No. 1 doubles, while Evins teamed with Nicky Kunz at No. 3 for the same score to give the Wildcats the early 1-0 lead. Moore and Mark snapped a three-match skid of their own, improving to 7-7 on the season (6-3 at No. 1).
Ethan Kallick and Joe Schafer finished the doubles off with an 8-3 win themselves as Davidson won the doubles points for the ninth time this year, but first since March 7 at The Citadel.
In singles action, Moore netted a 6-3, 6-4 triumph at No. 6 for his first win of the season in his first match.
Mark improved to 5-7 (3-3 SoCon) by giving up just three games in a 6-3, 6-1 victory at No. 3 over A. Codina Sala.
Evins gave the ‘Cats a fourth point by defeating Marco Osorio at No. 5 by the score of 6-4, 6-3. The junior is tied with Kunz with seven wins on the year.
Robert Lightbourn closed out the final point for Davidson by taking home a three-set affair at No. 4. The junior won his first set, 6-4, but fell in the second 6-4, forcing the final set. Lightbourn cruised in the last set, blanking Kyle Hoffman 6-0 for his fourth three-set win this season. Two of his past three matches have gone to a third set and he has prevailed in both of them.
The win gave head coach Drew Barrett his 55th at Davidson and 94th for his career as he closes in on 100.
