College of Charleston 7, UMBC 0
MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – The College of Charleston women’s tennis team finished its four-match home stand with a 7-0 sweep of UMBC this afternoon at the College of Charleston Tennis Center at Patriots Point in Mt. Pleasant, S.C.
With the win, CofC’s record improves to 9-7 while UMBC falls to 4-10.
The Cougars started off well in doubles when the tandem of senior Irene Viana and freshman Katherine Schofield knocked off Heidi Danielsson and Julia Sauer of UMBC 8-2 on Court 1.
The duo of junior Kelly Kambourelis and sophomore Samantha Maddox also managed a victory via an 8-5 score over Josefin Stange-Jonsson and Shannon Cleary of the Retrievers on Court 2 to clinch the doubles point for the College.
CofC carried the momentum from the doubles win over to singles when senior Christin Newman blanked Isabel Aldunate of UMBC 6-0, 6-0 on Court 1.
The Cougars continued right down the order when Kambourelis topped Danielsson 6-2, 6-1 on Court 2 to put CofC up 3-0.
Then, for the second match in a row, Viana clinched the overall win for the Cougars when she defeated Cleary 6-4, 6-0 on Court 6.
“I saw continued improvement in our enthusiasm today,” CofC Director of Tennis Angelo Anastopoulo said. “I like the way our girls are competing and those last two wins were exactly what we needed going into conference play against two very good teams in Davidson and Appalachian State this weekend. Hopefully we can carry this momentum right into those matches.”
CofC will travel up to North Carolina for two Southern Conference matches this weekend starting with Davidson on Saturday, March 23 at 10 a.m. (ET) on the Covington Tennis Courts in Davidson, N.C.
Kansas 4, Georgia Southern 0
HILTON HEAD, S.C. -- Georgia Southern Women's Tennis fell to Kansas University, 4-0, on Thursday afternoon at the Spring Break Tennis tournament at the Hilton Head Beach and Tennis Resort. The Eagles managed to win one doubles match but fell in three consecutive singles before leaving the other three unfinished.
Sophomore Jordana Klein and junior Caitlin Kitchen earned their fourth consecutive doubles win after only starting partnering up less than a week ago. The tandem defeated Victoria Khanevskaya and Anastasija Trubica 8-7 on court three to stay perfect in doubles action.
Senior-freshman duo Natalie Maffett and Stephanie Woods came close to a win on court two but fell 8-6 to Paulina Los and Maria Belen Luduena with the overall doubles point going to the Jayhawks as well.
The Eagles (6-8, 2-3 SoCon) followed up doubles play with three losses in singles on courts two, four and six, giving Kansas the overall win. Garrido, Woods and Maffett left their matches on court one, three and five unfinished after the match had already been determined.
The Jayhawks improve to 7-3 on the year.
The Eagles get back into conference play on Monday, March 25 with a home match against Elon at 2 p.m.
