Outdoor Track Performers of the Week

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Davidson junior Andrew Lantz and Appalachian State senior Jared Stalling have been named the Southern Conference’s Men’s Outdoor Track and Field Athletes of the Week for meets over last weekend. The selections are made by the league’s track and field coaches.

Lantz, in only his second race since last Aug. 31, won the 800m at the UNC Charlotte 49er Classic in a personal best, school record, conference and nation leading time of 1:50.25.  This was a personal best by six tenths of a second.

Stalling finished third in the shot put at the Wake Forest Open in a personal best of 55' 11" (17.04m). This mark is the fourth best in school history.  He also took sixth in the hammer throw with a toss of 184' 3" (56.15m) and finished second in the discus with a throw of 166' 3" (50.68m). He leads the conference in all three throws.

Western Carolina junior Jocelyn Keen and Appalachian State’s Cassie Crawford have been named the Southern Conference’s Women’s Outdoor Track and Field Athletes of the Week for meets over last weekend. The selections are made by the league’s track and field coaches.

Keen won the 1500m run in very windy conditions at the Georgia Relays with a SoCon-leading and personal-record performance of 4:36.31.  Keen also anchored WCU’s winning sprint medley team (3:57.57) with a 2:09 800m leg, and split 57.0 on WCU’s 4 x 400m relay squad that clocked 3:52.56.

Crawford, an Apex, N.C., native, placed second  at the Wake Forest Invitational with a vault of 12-5.50.

Men’s track honorable mention included: Stanley Broaden, So., APP; Broaden won the 400m hurdles at the Wake Forest Open in a personal best time of 52.36. This mark is also the fourth best in school history. In addition, Broaden finished fourth in the 110 m high hurdles in 14.42. In the prelims, he had the third best time of 14.27, the ninth best mark in Appalachian State history. Both hurdle event times lead the SoCon; Brandon Hairston, Sr., WCU; Hairston recorded a SoCon leading 10.53 in the 100m at the UGA Relays.  He also ran the second leg of WCU¹s SoCon leading and UGA Relays winning 4 x 100m (40.85) relay into very, very windy conditions.  Hairston also split a 20.6 leg on the WCU Sprint Medley Relay squad and anchored WCU¹s 4 x 40mm relay (47.5 split) to a SoCon leading performance of 3:12.59; Demetrios Pagonis, Sr., Davidson; Pagonis won the 5K at the Charlotte 49er Classic in a personal best, school record, conference and nation leading time of 14:09.96.  This was a personal best by about eight seconds.
