Wofford finishes fourth at C&F Bank Intercollegiate

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The Wofford women’s golf team finished fourth in the C&F Bank Intercollegiate at the Kingsmill Resort River golf course on Tuesday.

The Terriers posted a 309-305=614 to finish fourth out of 28 participating teams. Boston College won the event with a team score of 302-296--598. Richmond placed second after posting a 311-298=609, while Longwood finished third with a total of 306-306=612.

Wofford was led by Lauren Dunbar and Maegan Higgins, who shot 75-76=151 and 76-77=153, respectively. Dunbar finished in a tie for eighth and Higgins tied for 15th.

Anne Marie Covar posted a 79-75=154, Shelby Winters shot 79-77=156 and Alex Hendricks finished with 81-79=160.

The second round was started Monday and finished Tuesday morning, and the third round was canceled.

The Terriers will return to the course this weekend when they travel to Hilton Head, S.C., to host the Low Country Intercollegiate on March 24-25.

 

Appalachian State finishes eighth at MSU Ocala Spring Invitational

OCALA, Fla. – Senior Yue Xu finished tied for fifth overall, and the Appalachian State University women's golf team moved up one position to eighth in the final team standings on Tuesday at the MSU Ocala Spring Invitational at Juliette Falls Golf Resort.

Xu fired a final-round score of 76 (+4) to give her a total of 72-72-76=220 (+4) for the tournament and gave the China native her best finish since winning the Winthrop Intercollegiate during the fall season.

Firing the best score of the day in the Appalachian lineup was senior Lauren Smith with a 74 (+2). For the three-day tournament, Smith tallied a 74-80-74=228 (+12), which tied her for 18th place. Classmate Rumbidzai Masamvu was unable to improve on her first two scores, finishing with a 77-79-80=236 (+20).

Senior Mimi Burke and freshman Lily Yatawara closed out the lineup, as Burke closed the invitational with an 80-83-84=247 (+31) and Yatawara posted an 82-88-80=250 (+34).

Sophomore Haley Zagoria, who played as an individual, finished 55th with an 81-78-78=238 (+22).

For the tournament, Appalachian posted a 303-314-310=927 (+63). The eighth-place finish was one position better the only other Southern Conference participant, Western Carolina. Mercer was crowned champion with a 293-291-299=883 for a wire-to-wire victory.

The Mountaineers return to the links on Sunday for the Low Country Intercollegiate. The two-day event will be held at Moss Creek Plantation, the site of this season's SoCon Championship.

 

Western Carolina finishes ninth at MSU Ocala Spring Invitational

OCALA, Fla. – Sophomore Maria Kjelldorff carded three consecutive rounds of 4-over par 76, finishing tied for 18th to pace Western Carolina to a ninth-place finish at the MSU Ocala Spring Invitational held at the par-72, 6,113-yard Juliette Falls Golf Resort. WCU posted rounds of 312, 303 and 313 for a 54-hole score of 928, the team's best three-round event score of the season.

Kjelldorff turned in her season-best 54-hole score at 228. It was the second-best three-round event score for the Saltsjobaden, Sweden, native. Kjelldorff finished tied for third in the event with 38 pars as the Catamounts carded 150 pars in the tournament.

Freshman Mariah Hopkins, who matched Kjelldorff stroke-for-stroke over the first two days, carded a final-round 78 to slip into a tie for 29th in the final standings at 230, matching her career-best three-round tournament score. Hopkins also shot 230 (76.67 average) at the Starmount Fall Classic.

Freshman Taylor Allison finished tied for 40th with a 233 (79-75-79) while classmate Fatima Gonzalez-Carriles slipped into a tie for 56th in the final standings at 239 (81-76-82). Senior Michelle Bello rounded out the WCU side, finishing tied for 81st overall, carding her best round on Tuesday at 80 to finish with a three-day total of 255.

Mercer led the event from start to finish, edging team runner-up Stetson by seven strokes with an 883 against 890. Toledo finished third at 893, seven strokes ahead of tournament host Morehead State in fourth, with Daytona State College rallying to finish out the top five at 905.

McKayla Anderson of McNeese State overcame an opening round 6-over par 78 to post rounds of 67 and 70 to win the individual medalist honors by two strokes over second-place Katie Rice of Morehead State.

Western Carolina returns to action March 24-25 at the Lowcountry Invitational, hosted by Wofford College at the Moss Creek Golf Club in Hilton Head, S.C., the site of the 2013 Southern Conference Women's Golf Championship. This weekend's tournament will be played on the South course, while the conference championship will be contested on the North course.

The Catamounts return to the tournament after a two-year hiatus after winning the first two team championships in event history as a co-host. WCU won the first event over Wofford in the spring of 2009 by six strokes before edging James Madison by two strokes a year later.
