Western Carolina eighth
at MSU Ocala Spring Invitational
OCALA, Fla. – The
Western Carolina duo of Maria Kjelldorff and Mariah Hopkins shot matching
rounds for a second consecutive day, both carding 4-over par 76s to stand tied
with three others for 22nd place after 36 holes at the MSU Ocala Spring
Invitational. The Catamounts enter the final round just nine strokes outside of
the team top five at the par-72, 6,113-yard Juliette Falls Golf Resort.
Kjelldorff, a sophomore, and Hopkins, a freshman, matched
their opening rounds with identical scores of 76 to shoot 152 through two
rounds to pace WCU.
Tuesday’s final round will feature a shotgun start. The
Catamounts will be paired with golfers from sixth-place Daytona State College
and Southern Conference rival Appalachian State, which sits two strokes behind
WCU in ninth place.
Freshman Taylor Allison advanced seven spots in the second
round into a tie for 35th, shooting the team’s low round of 3-over 75 on Monday
to stand two strokes in arrears of her teammates Hopkins and Kjelldorff. Her
classmate, Fatima Gonzalez-Carriles, improved her second round by five strokes
to shoot 4-over 76, advancing 11 spots in the individual standings, while
senior Michelle Bello was nine strokes better on Monday with an 83, sitting in
82nd place overall.
Lacey Fears of Mercer advanced two spots in the standings,
breaking the three-way tie for third with her teammate Kaitlin Marrin and Kate
Hoops of Toledo to take a two-stroke edge over first-round leader Kara
Brinkmann from Ohio University after 36 holes. Fears has a two-round score of 3-under
par 141, just ahead of Brinkmann, who backed up her opening-round 3-under 69
with a 2-over 74 to sit in the runner-up spot at 143.
Appalachian State’s Yue Xu is tied with Toledo’s Jennifer
Elsholz for third with an even-par 144. Combined, four golfers are even-par or
lower in the event.
Mercer continues to lead the 14-team field, stretching its
advantage to 12 strokes over the second-place tie between Stetson and Toledo at
584-to-596. The Bears have posted team rounds of 293 and a tourney-low 291 on
Monday. Host Morehead State is fourth at 604 with McNeese State in fifth with a
two-round score of 606.
The third and final round of the 54-hole event is slated for
Tuesday morning.
Appalachian State ninth
at MSU Ocala Spring Invitational
OCALA, Fla. – Despite
senior Yue Xu's second-round 72 (E), Appalachian Statewas unable to improve its
first-round 303 as the Mountaineers dropped four spots in the team standings to
ninth, carding a 314 (+26) Monday afternoon at Juliette Falls Golf Resort.
Xu's even-par matched her first-round total, as she sits
tied for third place in the overall standings.
The matching 72s are Xu's best two rounds of the spring schedule.
Following Xu in the Mountaineer lineup is senior Lauren
Smith, who turned in an 80, giving her a 154 (+10) for her two-day total.
Classmate Rumbidzai Masamvu also totaled a higher score than her Sunday total,
carding a 79 (+7). Masamvu is 45th with a two-day total of 156 (+12).
Rounding out the Appalachian scoring was senior Mimi Burke,
holding an 80-83=163 (+19), and freshman Lily Yatawara with an 82-88=170 (+26).
Playing as an individual, sophomore Haley Zagoria is in 57th
place and was the only Mountaineer to improve on her opening-round score.
Zagoria carries an 82-78=160 (+16) heading into the final round.
The Mountaineers are 33 strokes behind tournament leader Mercer,
as just three teams are under 600 for the tournament. Stetson and Toledo are
tied for second place with 596s.
The final round from Ocala will be a shotgun start on
Tuesday.
C&F Bank
Intercollegiate second round suspended
WILLIAMSBURG, Va. –
Monday’s second round of the C&F Bank Intercollegiate at the Kingsmill
Resort River golf course was suspended by inclement weather and will be
finished Tuesday. Tuesday’s scheduled third round will not be played. Wofford is tied for third place, trailing first
place Boston College by seven strokes.
The Terriers posted a 309 in Sunday’s first round and are
tied with Gardner-Webb for third. Wofford was led by Lauren Dunbar and Maegan
Higgins, who shot 75 (+4) and 76 (+5), respectively. After the first round,
Dunbar is tied for sixth, while Higgins is tied for 11th.
Anne Marie Covar and Shelby Winters both posted 79s and Alex
Hendricks finished with an 81.
