ELON, N.C. - Elon clinched the doubles point then swept the singles matches to top Furman, 7-0, Sunday in Southern Conference men's tennis action at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center in Elon, N.C.
The Phoenix won two out of three doubles matches to take the opening point. Cameron Silverman and Stefan Fortmann, ranked 34th nationally, topped senior Andrew Mellow and junior Joel Cook, 8-6, at flight one, and Juan Madrid and Jordan Kaufman combined for an 8-3 victory versus sophomore Jacob Behal and senior Tyler Droll in the number three match-up. Furman picked up a win in the second doubles match, as junior Alex Christ and freshman Matt Browne defeated Robert Lindgren and Brian Kowalski, 8-6.
In singles play, 38th-ranked Silverman defeated Mellow, 6-4, 6-3 in the top contest. Fortmann bested Christ, 6-0, 6-2 at flight two, and Lindgren defeated Cook at number three, 7-5, 6-3. In the flight four match, Kaufman recorded a 6-2, 6-4 win versus Behal, while Kowalski edged past Browne, 6-1, 6-7, 1-0 (10-7) at number five. Madrid notched a 6-1, 6-2 victory over senior Robbie Aru in the flight six singles match-up.
