Georgia Southern 7, The Citadel 0
CHARLESTON, S.C. -- Georgia Southern Men's Tennis improved to 2-0 in conference action after a 7-0 sweep over The Citadel in a Saturday afternoon match at the Earle Tennis Center in Charleston, S.C.
The Eagles (6-4, 2-0 SoCon) claimed the overall win in doubles thanks to victories on court two and three. Matthijs Verdam and Kyle Hoffman teamed up to give the Eagles the ability to take the point, defeating Dillon Berkabile and JC Pauli on court three. On court two, the duo of Andrew Dromsky and Oliver Webb clinched the doubles point with a 8-4 victory over Peter Bleach and Alex Howle.
The momentum was carried over into singles as the Eagles quickly earned straight set wins on courts four, two and five. Junior Marco Osorio clinched the match on court five with a 6-2, 6-4 win over his opponent Elliott Sperr. The junior has now won three straight matches after losing his first four of the season.
Before Osorio's victory, two more Eagles had already claimed wins for the Blue and Gold. Webb defeated James Atkinson 6-2, 6-0 for the first win of the day at the number four position and Rayane Djouad followed shortly thereafter with his team leading seventh win of the season after beating Dillon Berkabile 6-2, 7-5.
Even though the match was played, three more Eagles battled out wins, all coming in three sets.
Hoffman earned his first singles starting nod of the year and turned it into his first win as well, defeating Jackson Pride 4-6, 6-1, 10-6 in a comeback victory
Senior Verdam added his fourth singles win of the year with a 5-7, 6-4, 10-6 victory over Peter Bleach.
Another solid performance came from Dromsky, who earned his career first victory at the number one singles position. The sophomore rallied against David Orces and took the match with a score of 4-6, 6-3, 10-7 for the Eagles' final win of the day.
Seven Eagles currently own undefeated singles records in conference play.
The Citadel fell to 5-7 on the year, including a 0-5 SoCon mark.
Elon 6, Wofford 1
ELON, N.C. - The Wofford men's tennis team was defeated on the road at Elon, 6-1, Saturday afternoon at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center. The Terriers fall to 2-8 and 0-3 in the Southern Conference for the year, while the Phoenix improve to 7-4 and 3-0 in conference play.
On the doubles side, Elon swept all three matches to claim the doubles point. First, Juan Madrid and Jordan Kaufman defeated Wofford's Parks Thompson and Graham Duncan 8-5 at the No. 3 position. Next, #34 Cameron Silverman and Stefan Fortmann topped Rob Galloway and Walker Heffron 8-4 in the No. 1 spot. Finally, Brain Kowalski and Robert Lindgren edged past Wofford's Jackson Keith and Tom Wood 9-7 at No. 2.
In singles action, Elon jumped in front quickly, winning the first set in four of six match-ups. The Phoenix clinched the victory after four straight set wins to open singles play. Lindgren beat Keith (6-1, 6-1) at the No. 3 spot, Galloway fell to #38 Cameron Silverman (6-0, 6-2) in the No. 1 spot, Kowalski bested Heffron (6-3, 6-1) at No. 4, and Fortman defeated Drew Superstein (6-2, 6-3) at the No. 2 position.
The day's final two matches went to third set super tie-breakers. In the No. 5 spot, Duncan won his first set against Madrid 6-3, dropped the second 6-1, and fell 10-6 in the tie-breaker to give Elon their sixth point. Wood earned Wofford's loan point after he defeated Arboleda in the first set, dropped a tight second, but rallied to win the super tie-breaker (6-2, 5-7, 1-0 (10-8)) at No. 6.
College of Charleston 4, Appalachian State 3
MT. PLEASANT, S.C. - The College of Charleston men's tennis team extended its Southern Conference win streak to three-straight matches with a 4-3 decision over Appalachian State on Saturday afternoon at the CofC Tennis Center at Patriots Point.
Freshman Zack Lewis clinched the dual match as he led 6-4 in the first set and 3-0 in the second set, before ASU's Matt Saltgaver had to retire due to injury.
The Cougars (5-6, 3-2 SoCon) won two of the three doubles matches versus the Mountaineers (3-8, 1-1 SoCon) to take the early 1-0 momentum going into singles play.
Lewis and sophomore Alon Faiman an 8-6 victory over the No. 3 doubles tandem of Steve Karendal and Steve Lake from ASU, while junior Crescente Lesser (Santiago, Chile) and sophomore Sebastian Lopez (Medellin, Colombia) clinched the doubles point by a count of 8-4 over Jen-Willem Kleynhans and Andrew McKinnon on court two.
Freshman Josh Record saw a start in the singles lineup and put the Cougars up 2-0 on the scoreboard with a straight-set win over Steve Lake, 6-3, 6-2, at the No. 6 line.
Junior Brice Allanic used a love first set and 6-4 second set to defeat ASU's Sebastien King at the top of the order to position Lewis for the eventual match clincher.
CofC will have a quick one-day turnaround as the team travels for a make-up, non-conference match at Mercer tomorrow at 3 p.m. (ET) at the Leroy Peddy Tennis Center in Macon, Ga.
Chattanooga 6, UNCG 1
GREENSBORO, N.C. - The UNCG men's tennis team lost its second match of the season to Chattanooga, 6-1 Saturday, March 16. The Blue and Gold are 7-2 this season and 2-2 in SoCon play.
The Mocs won two out of three doubles matches to earn the doubles point.
Freshman Daniel Mack and junior Ahmet Sarioglu lost 8-2 to Ankit Chopra and John Peacey at No. 1.
At No. 3, Sophomore Randy Phillipsand freshman William Albright fell to Manuel Barroetavena and Jackson Tresnan, 8-6.
Sophomore Cameron Smith and freshman Gaston Murray picked up the lone doubles win at No. 2 against Chris Smith and Roberto Vieira, 8-6.
Sarioglu dropped his match to Barroetavena at No. 1, 6-1, 6-2.
At No. 2, Murray won the only singles match for the Spartans 6-2, 6-3 against Chris Smith.
Mack fell 6-4, 6-4 to Pavels Grigorjevs at No. 4, before Cameron Smith lost 6-2, 6-4 to Tresnan at No. 5.
Albright dropped a tough match against Luke Saunders at No. 6, 6-2, 6-7 (2-7), 6-3, before Phillips fought in a third-set tiebreaker at No. 3 but lost to Chopra, 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 (7-2).
