Swim, Martin Named to Johnny Bench Watch List

WICHITA, Kan. – Elon's Alex Swim and Western Carolina’s Adam Martin were among 48 catchers nationally named Monday to the 2013 Johnny Bench Award presented by BaseballSavings.com by The Greater Wichita Area Sports Commission.

The award is presented annually to the top catcher at the NCAA Division I ranks and the watch list will be updated until May 6.  From there, the list will be narrowed down to semifinalists, which will be announced on May 16.  Ballots will be sent to a national voting panel at the end of May for a vote to determine the three finalists.  The finalists will be announced on June 4 and a final vote of the national committee will occur during the College World Series.  All finalists will be brought to Wichita and the winner will be announced at the 15th Annual Greater Wichita Sports Banquet on June 27.

In his senior season, Swim has started all 14 games for the Phoenix and is second on the team in both runs scored (13) and RBI (13).  He has thrown out nearly 24 percent of all base stealers in 2013.

Martin has started all six games in which he has seen action this year, collecting four base hits, including a double and a RBI. Behind the plate he’s committed just one error with 48 putouts and six assists to date. Last season, the Marietta, Ga., native hit .281 with 18 extra-base hits, including nine doubles, two triples and seven home runs. He drove in 33 runs in 2012.
