Chattanooga ties for fifth
at JMU/Eagle Landing Invitational
ORANGE PARK, Fla. – The
Chattanooga Mocs women’s golf team ended the JMU Eagle Landing Invitational
tied for fifth with East Tennessee State. UTC shot 307 Sunday for a 54-hole
total of 904.
Emily McLennan tied for ninth shooting 5-over par 221. It is
the freshman’s second top-10 finish and best 54-hole score of her young career.
She was not alone in posting her best total. Agathe Sauzon tied
for 13th in just her second tourney with the Mocs. Her 1-over par 73 Sunday led
the team as she ended up a stroke behind McLennan overall at 222.
Mette Kryger, Isabella Loza and Jordan Britt also competed
for the Mocs. Kryger shot 229, missing her best 54-hole score by two shots,
which came in the spring’s opening event. Loza shot 232, while Britt registered
238.
Marion Duvernay and Porsche Campbell played as individuals
with Duvernay also finishing in the top 10. After opening with a 78, she shot 2-under
over her final 36 holes for a plus-4 220, tying for seventh. Campbell shot 235
for her 54 holes.
Chattanooga returns to the course this Friday remaining in
Florida for the SunTrust Gator Women’s Golf Invitational. The three-day,
54-hole event is March 15-17.
Elon finishes ninth
at JMU/Eagle Landing Invitational
ORANGE PARK, Fla. –
Martyna Mierzwa's 221 (72-72-77) placed the Elon senior in a tie for ninth
individually, while the Phoenix women's golf team finished ninth in the 17-team
JMU/Eagle Landing Invitational that concluded on Sunday.
Mierzwa was one of just seven golfers in the field of 97
players to finish her three rounds below par on the par-3 holes. Mierzwa was -1 on her par-3s. Her 10 birdies were tied for the fourth-most
in the field.
Kathryn Buckingham earned Elon's second-best finish, placing
in a tie for 39th with a 230 (72-74-84).
Buckingham was -2 on her par-5 holes over the course of the tournament. She
parred 36 holes.
Just one stroke back was Emily Brooks, who tied for 43rd
with a 231 (72-77-82). She was followed
by Sunna Vidisdottir and Katie Partridge.
Vidisdottir placed in a tie for 58th with a 235 (77-74-84), while
Partridge was tied for 76th with a 239 (77-84-78).
The individual title went to Frida Gustafsson Spang of East
Carolina. She finished the tournament
with a 4-under 212 (69-70-73).
Campbell led throughout the tournament and finished Sunday
with an 870 (293-290-287) to claim the team title. Mississippi State (891), East Carolina (897)
and James Madison (903) held down spots two through four. East Tennessee State and Chattanooga tied for
fifth with a 904.
Elon will not play in another tournament until the UNCW
Seahawk Classic in Wallace, N.C., April 6-7.
The Phoenix will be heading to England and Scotland later in the month
for a Spring Break tour, which will include the chance to play the Old Course
at St. Andrews.
Samford finishes 14th
at JMU/Eagle Landing Invitational
ORANGE, PARK, Fla.
– The Samford University women’s golf team carded a final team score of 929
(305-311-313) on Sunday as the Bulldogs finished in 14th place at the 2013
JMU/Eagle Landing Invitational being hosted by James Madison University at the
Eagle Landing Golf Club.
The three-day, 54-hole competition consisted of 17 teams. The
highly acclaimed Eagle Landing Country Club is a par-72 course that plays 6,300
yards.
Samford’s Anna Heim turned in the team’s best score of the
tournament with a 54-hole tally of 230 (78-75-77). Heim, the Bulldogs’ senior
native of Lafayette, La., was followed in Samford’s lineup by teammates Emily
Stallings (72-82-78=232), Natalie Mitchell (79-75-79=233), Bailey Gray (76-81-79=236)
and Kayla Turner (83-80-84=247).
The Samford University women’s golf team will next be in
action March 25-26, as the Bulldogs travel to Stockbridge, Ga., for the 2013
Georgia State Invitational to be held at the Eagles Landing Golf Course.
Western Carolina finishes
17th at JMU/Eagle Landing Invitational
ORANGE PARK, Fla. –
Western Carolina completed play in the JMU/Eagle Landing Invitational on
Sunday, rounding out the 54-hole event in 17th place after carding a final-round
317 for a three-day total of 956 at the Eagle Landing Country Club.
WCU was paced by a pair of freshmen as Mariah Hopkins
finished tied for 53rd at 233 (75-76-82) and classmate Taylor Allison was two
strokes back in a tie for 58th at 235 for the tournament.
Allison trimmed two strokes off a pair of 79s she carded in
the first two rounds to fire a 5-over 77 on Sunday. Hopkins carded six bogeys
in her final round with two costly double-bogeys on the first and third holes
after playing the back nine at 4-over par.
WCU sophomore Maria Kjelldorff posted the team’s best final-round
score of 4-over par 76 on Sunday, finishing the event at 236 (77-83-76), tied
for 66th.
Rounding out WCU’s finishing order was senior Michelle Bello
in a tie for 93rd at 254 (86-84-84) and freshman Fatima Gonzales Carriles in
95th at 260 (94-84-82).
Western Carolina returns to the Sunshine State next weekend,
March 17-19, for the Ocala Spring Invitational hosted by Morehead State at the
Juliette Falls Country Club in Ocala, Fla.
Furman finishes 13th
at Darius Rucker Intercollegiate
HILTON HEAD ISLAND,
S.C. – The Furman women’s golf team posted its best round of the weekend on
Sunday with a 305 to claim 13th place in the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate at
the par-71, 6,211-yard Long Cove Club.
The Paladins’ Laura Wearn (+9) secured a share of 14th place
at 9-over by recording three birdies on Sunday en route to a 3-over 74. Freshman Valentina Romero (+16) posted a 4-over
75 for the second straight round, while Stephanie Carlozzi and Aubrie Street
both finished the 54-hole event with 7-over 78s.
The University of Alabama shot a 291 on Sunday to erase a seven-stroke
deficit and win the tournament at 24-over par.
LSU and Vanderbilt tied for second at 28-over with Arizona State in
fourth place and Arkansas and North Carolina tied for fifth.
Noemi Jimenez (-4) of Arizona State shot a 3-under 68 on
Sunday to take individual medalist honors.
She finished four strokes ahead of second-round leader Madelene Sagstrom
(E) of LSU.
The Darius Rucker Intercollegiate field included 13 of the
top 50 teams in the nation and 14 of the top 50 players in the latest GolfStat
rankings.
Furman returns to action March 25-26, at the Briar’s Creek
Invitational in Johns Island, S.C.
