Elon second at JMU/Eagle Landing Invitational

ORANGE PARK, Fla. – Following two rounds of play at the JMU/Eagle Landing Invitational, two Elon women's golfer find themselves in the top 10 while the Phoenix sits second as a team with a score of 590 (293-297).

Martyna Mierzwa posted her second consecutive round of par to pace the Phoenix through two rounds.  Mierzwa's 144 (72-72) has her in a tie for fourth out of 97 golfers.

She is followed closely by Kathryn Buckingham, who is tied for seventh with a mark of 146 (72-74).

Emily Brooks appears in the top 20, as her 149 (72-77) has the freshman tied for 18th individually.

Elon's final two participants are Sunna Vidisdottir and Katie Partridge.  Vidisdottir will enter Sunday's final round of play in a tie for 31st with a score of 151 (77-74).  Partridge is in a tie for 80th with a 161 (77-84).

East Carolina's Frida Gustafsson Spang (69-70=139) will carry a two-stroke advantage over Campbell's Tahnia Ravnjak (70-71=141) into Sunday's final 18 holes for the individual lead.

Elon finds itself seven shots back of 36th-ranked Campbell (293-290=583) heading into Sunday.  The Phoenix leads East Carolina (302-289=591) by one stroke and James Madison (297-296=593) by two shots with 18 holes to go.

Three other Southern Conference programs are also in the field - Chattanooga (5th, 597), Samford (13th, 616) and Western Carolina (17th, 639).

 

Chattanooga fifth at JMU/Eagle Landing Invitational

ORANGE PARK, Fla. – The Chattanooga Mocs women’s golf team moved into fifth place shooting 7-over par 295 Saturday at the JMU/Eagle Landing Invitational. UTC has a two-day total of 597, four shots behind host James Madison in fourth.

Agathe Sauzon paced a consistent Mocs scoring effort with a 1-over par 73. Emily McLennan, Mette Kryger and Isabella Loza each shot 74s for the plus-7 team tally. Jordan Britt had the drop score with a 78.

McLennan leads UTC through 36 holes at plus-1, 145. Sauzon moved into a tie for 18th at 5-over (149). Kryger (151), Loza (152) and Britt (158) round out the team scoring.

Marion Duvernay and Porsche Campbell are playing as individuals. Duvernay’s 2-under 70 Saturday moved her into a tie for 11th at 4-over 148. Campbell shot a second straight 75 and is tied for 22nd at 150.

Chattanooga tees off No. 1 Sunday at 8:40 a.m. Britt leads off, followed by Loza (8:48), Kryger (8:56), Sauzon (9:04) and McLennan (9:12).

 

Western Carolina 17^th at JMU/Eagle Landing Invitational

ORANGE PARK, Fla. – Catamount freshman Mariah Hopkins stands in a tie for 31st after 36 holes to lead Western Carolina at the JMU/Eagle Landing Invitational, hosted by James Madison at the Eagle Landing Country Club. WCU remains in 17th place in the team standings entering Sunday’s final round.

WCU shot a collective 322 in the second round for a two-day total of 639 overall.

Hopkins shot a 4-over 76 in the second round for a two-day total of 151. For a second straight day, the Greensboro, N.C., native posted a 1-under on the back nine, making the turn with two birdies against one bogey.

Behind Hopkins, classmate Taylor Allison is tied for 69th after matching her opening-round 79 with the 7-over again on Saturday.

Rounding out WCU’s scoring five are Maria Kjelldorff (76th-t, 160), Michelle Bello (92nd-t, 170) and freshman Fatima Gonzales Carriles (96th, 178).

The third and final round is scheduled for Sunday.

 

Furman 12^th at Darius Rucker Intercollegiate

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. – The Furman women’s golf team posted a 306 on Saturday to climb into a tie with the University of South Carolina for 12th place after 36 holes in the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate at the par-71, 6,211-yard Long Cove Club.

Senior Laura Wearn and freshman Valentina Romero each tallied a 4-over 75 to help the Paladins improve by seven strokes from their first round 313 on Friday. Romero, a native of Colombia, shot a 2-over par on both the front and back nine while carding a birdie at No. 2 in second round play.

Wearn (+6), who opened the tournament with a 73 on Friday, trails leader Madalene Sagstrom of LSU by 10 strokes entering the final 18 holes and is tied for 16th place.

Vanderbilt (+10), with a 282 on Saturday, holds the tournament lead by three stroke over second-place LSU (+13) and is seven strokes ahead of third-place Alabama (+17).  The 15-team Darius Rucker field included 13 of the top-50 ranked teams in the nation.

Final round play is slated for Sunday morning.
