UNCG 6, Wofford 1
GREENSBORO, N.C. - The Wofford men's tennis team was defeated by UNCG 6-1 on the road Saturday afternoon in Southern Conference action. The Terriers drop to 2-7 for the season and 0-2 in conference play, while the Spartans improve to 6-0 and 2-0 in the SoCon.
In doubles action, UNCG swept all three matches to win the doubles point. At the No. 1 position, Wofford's Rob Galloway and Walker Heffron lost a hard fought match to Daniel Mack and Ahmet Sarioglu 8-6. Gaston Murray and Cameron Smith topped the Terrier pair of Jackson Keith and Parks Thompson 8-4 in the No. 2 spot. Finally, UNCG's Randy Phillips and William Albright defeated Drew Superstein and Graham Duncan 8-5 at No. 3.
On the singles side, the Spartans jumped in front early winning the first set in all six matches. UNCG would go on to claim straight set victories in four match-ups to secure the win. First, Phillips beat Keith (6-1, 6-3) at the No. 3 position. Next, Heffron dropped his match at the No. 4 spot to Mack (6-1, 6-4). Third, Duncan fell in a tight second set to Smith (6-1, 7-5) at No. 5. Then, Albright defeated Thompson (6-1, 6-2) in the No. 6 spot.
The Final two match-ups of the day would both go to third sets with each team winning one. At the No. 1 position, Galloway and Sarioglu went back and forth after splitting the first two sets, but Sarioglu came out on top (6-2, 2-6, 6-2). The day's final match would come down to a third set tie-breaker between Superstein and Murray. Each won their first set 6-2, but Superstein would claim the point with a 7-6 (7-2) win in the final set.
The Terriers return to the court on March 16, when they travel to Elon, N.C. to face the Phoenix. The match is set to begin at 1:00 p.m. at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.
USC Upstate 4, Elon 3
ELON, N.C. - The Elon University men's tennis team dropped a 4-3 decision to USC Upstate on Saturday, March 9, in non-conference action from the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.
The Phoenix started off strong in doubles, winning two out of three matches to take an early 1-0 lead. Despite dropping No. 1 singles, Elon bounced back to take No. 2 and 3 to win the point. Brian Kowalski and Robert Lindgren won at No. 2, while Juan Madrid and Jordan Kaufman came away victorious at No. 3.
But the Spartans stormed back in singles, taking four of six matches to secure the win.
Stefan Fortmann was one of two Elon players to come away victorious in singles, topping Yvon Haessig in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2. Fortmann improves to 5-2 on the year with the win.
Kaufman battled Ramon Simonetti in a three-set thriller, coming away with a 7-6 (7-4), 2-6, 7-5, decision. Kaufman has won four straight in singles and improves to 5-3 on the year.
Cameron Silverman, ranked 26th in the nation in singles, dropped a tough battle at No. 1 singles to Matthias Kidler. Silverman bounced back from a 6-3 loss in the first set to win 6-2 in the second, but Kidler managed to claim a 7-5 victor in the third.
Elon returns to action on Sunday at 3 p.m. against Texas-Pan American at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.
