Appalachian State 4, Chattanooga 2

BOONE, N.C. - Appalachian State women's tennis knocked off an undefeated University of Tennessee at Chattanooga in a 4-2 final at Yonahlossee Racquet Club on Friday afternoon.

The Mountaineers improve to 8-2 on the season after fighting past the Lady Mocs (8-1) in their first conference match of the year.  

The afternoon began with doubles action, where Ellie Linsell remains undefeated with partner Mackenzie LaSure. The Mountaineer tandem handed Kayla Jones and Kelsey Coots a 9-7 decision in No. 1 doubles . UTC managed to pick up match with an 8-7 (1) tiebreaker in No. 3 doubles, when Jenna Nurik and Kaylene Chadwell defeated Clare Cox and Jennifer Ansari. But, Gabriela Celi and Brianna Armellino found success in their first conference match with an 8-6 final against Claire Mulyadi and Alexa Flynn in No. 3 doubles to give Appalachian the 1-0 advantage. 

Moving into singles competition, Linsell won at No. 1 with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Nurik, but UTC would respond the Mountaineers with a pair of wins. Chadwell defeated Cox in No. 2 flight (7-5, 6-1), while Jones defeated Ansari at the No. 3 spot (6-0, 6-1). The Mountaineers would answer back, however, with Appalachian freshman Armellino defeating Coots in No. 4 flight (6-3, 5-7, 7-5) and Celi handing Flynn a loss in No. 6 singles (6-4, 6-1). 

Elon 6, Longwood 1

ELON, N.C. - The Elon University women's tennis team captured its tenth consecutive win on Friday, March 1, with a 6-1 decision over the Longwood Lancers at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.

Elon (10-1) has now won 10 consecutive dual matches dating back to a 6-1 win over Richmond on Jan. 25. It marks the longest streak in program history since making the transition to the Division I ranks.

"I'm really proud of the toughness and determination our players have showed this week," said Elon head coach Elizabeth Anderson.  "We've had a challenging schedule this week with four matches and we've competed in every single one to come out with a win. We look forward to continuing to improve in practice in preparation for the start of Southern Conference play in eight days."

Playing at No. 1 singles for the first time this season, Frida Jansaker won her team-best 11th match of the season and her seventh straight match overall with a quick 6-1, 6-0, decision versus Marta Pinyol. Jansaker and teammate Jordan Johnston were victorious earlier in the match in doubles, defeating Pinyol and Allison Shulman, 8-2, to improve to 10-1 on the year. The win helped Elon secure the doubles point.

Viviana Stavreva won her seventh match of the season, claiming a 6-4, 6-1, win in straight sets against Shulman at No. 2 singles.

Taylor Casey stepped in at No. 6 singles and came up with a point for the maroon and gold, as the rookie defeated Bethany Law in impressive fashion, 6-1, 6-1.

Barbora Lazarova was victorious at No. 4 for Elon, topping Sarah Moomau in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2, for her eighth win of the year.

Maria Camara Ruiz continued her impressive play this season, as the sophomore registered a 6-1, 6-2, victory at the No. 5 position against Longwood's Hannah Hill. Camara Ruiz has won six straight matches, which is tied with Briana Berne for the second longest streak on the team.

Elon opens Southern Conference play on March 9 at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center against Samford. A day later, the Phoenix hosts Chattanooga.
