SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Davidson’s Demetrios
Pagonis and Samford’s Ryan Cook have been named the Southern Conference Men’s
Indoor Track and Field Athletes of the Week, while Samford's Lauren D'Alessio and Elon's Megan Kirschling have been named the Southern Conference's Women's Indoor Track and Field Athletes of the Week for meets over the weekend. The
selections are made by the league’s track and field coaches.
Pagonis
easily won the 3000m at the JDL Hilton Garden Invitational in 8:21.52. He is
currently ranked second on the SoCon 3000m list and first on the 5K list.
Cook
recorded a personal best of 16’2.75” in the pole vault at the Meyo Invitational
in South Bend, Ind. He is ranked second on the conference lists.
On
the track, D’Alessio ran a season-best and conference-leading 9:35.80 at the
Meyo Invitational in South Bend, Ind. D’Alessio was the 2012 SoCon Cross
Country Runner of the Year and finished first at the conference championship
meet in October.
In
the field events, Kirschling placed second in the High Jump at the Gene
Anderson Invitational in Chapel Hill, N.C.with a jump of 5’10” (1.78m). She set
a new Elon school record.
Track honorable mentions include: UNCG’s Paul Chelimo,
who ran a 4:09.41 in the Camel City Indoor Mile at the Hilton Garden
Invitational. His time was good for seventh in a field that included five
professional runners; Appalachian State’s Brian Graves, who won the JDL Hilton
Garden Invitational 5000m in a personal-record time of 14:49.63; Western
Carolina’s Aaron Harris, who won the 400m at the JDL Hilton Garden Invitational
with a time of 49.36 which ranks third on the SoCon list; Samford’s Brandon
Hazouri, who ran a personal best in the mile with a time of 4:13.80 at the Meyo
Invitational in South Bend, Ind.
Field honorable mentions include: Appalachian State’s
Henry Bustle, who placed fifth in the long jump at the Hilton Garden
Invitational with a jump of 22’7”; Western Carolina’s Jared Johnson, who
recorded two personal records this weekend at the JDL Hilton Garden
Invitational in the 35 lb. weight throw and the shot put; Davidson’s Michael
Lorentsen, who broke the Davidson indoor school record in the pole vault by 8.5”.
