GWU’s Salyer, Porter, Golde and Guthrie Posts Wins in 19-15 Dual Match Loss to Duke

 

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – Gardner-Webb picked up wins from redshirt seniors Blake Salyer, Travis Porter and Justin Guthrie, as well as redshirt sophomore Robbie Golde, yet suffered losses in the other six bouts to fall to the Duke Blue Devils 19-15 in dual match action on Tuesday night.

The loss was the Runnin’ Bulldogs third straight in dual-match action and dropped GWU to 4-9 overall in dual competition on the year.

After Duke took an early 6-0 match lead with back-to-back decisions at 174 and 184 pounds to start the match, GWU’s Salyer opened up the bout at 197 pounds with a two-point takedown in the first period and then finished with an escape and another two-point takedown in the third period to earn a 5-1 decision over Dylan Ryan and cut the Blue Devils’ lead to three at 6-3.

The heavyweight bout would go into overtime, as GWU’s Porter used a two-point reversal and a two-point takedown in the second overtime period to defeat Brian Self of Duke 5-2 and tie the match score up at 6-6.

A forfeit by the Blue Devils at 133 pounds to GWU’s Robbie Golde pushed the home team in front by two at 12-10 with four contests remaining.

The next three contests went in favor of the Blue Devils, all by way off decisions, as Duke pulled out to a 19-12 lead with one bout remaining.

In the final contest of the night, Guthrie scored a late two-point takedown in the third period to earn a come-from-behind 6-5 win over Randy Roden and put the final match score at 19-15 in favor of the Blue Devils.

Gardner-Webb recognized its five redshirt seniors - Salyer, Guthrie, Porter and Ryan and Alex Medved – prior to the start of the match.

Gardner-Webb (4-9, 2-4 SoCon) will return to the mat to take on The Citadel on Sunday at 1 p.m. in Charleston, S.C.
