DAVIDSON, N.C. - The Davidson men's tennis team make it three straight in the win column when they scored a 4-2 home win vs. Gardner-Webb Tuesday evening in a non-conference match in the Knobloch Tennis Center.
The Wildcats (3-1) closed out their four-match homestand to start the year with three wins in a row vs. Wingate, Presbyterian and Gardner-Webb, which fell to 0-3 on the season.
Chris Mark and Kevin Moore sealed up the doubles point for Davidson to start the match with an 8-5 triumph at No. 1 after Robert Lightbourn and Nicky Kunz rolled to an 8-2 victory at No. 3. Mark and Moore are 3-1 on the young season at the No. 1 spot.
The 'Cats then netted three of the six singles matches led by Mark. The senior picked up a 6-1, 6-4 decision at No. 4 to push his singles mark to 2-1, with both triumphs coming at No. 4.
Fellow classmate Joe Schafer ran his singles mark to 3-1 after a straight set, 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 2, while Connor Evins sealed up the team win and earned his first win of the 2013 campaign with a three-set affair, 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 at No. 5 singles.
The Wildcats avenged a 5-2 defeat to the Runnin' Bulldogs a year ago on their home court.
Davidson takes to the road this weekend for the first time with a doubleheader vs. Temple and Saint Joseph in Philadelphia, Pa., Feb. 9. Match times are set for 1 and 7 p.m.
Wofford 4, UNC Asheville 3
SPARTANBURG, S.C. - The Wofford men's tennis team earned their first victory of the season in dramatic fashion Tuesday afternoon when they defeated UNC Asheville 4-3. The Terriers improve to 1-3 on the year while the Bulldogs drop to 0-1.
In doubles action, Wofford jumped in front early after Rob Galloway and Walker Heffron topped Daniel Kripak and Matt Waissen (8-3) at the No. 1 position. The next two matches were much closer as both went into tiebreakers. The Terriers were able to come out on top when Graham Duncan and Parks Thompson defeated Peter Conaty and John Schubel (8-7) at No. 3 to claim the doubles point for Wofford.
On the singles side, UNC Asheville took the lead after two straight set victories. First at the No. 2 spot, Keith fell to Kripak (6-1, 6-2) to tie the match at one. Then, Adrien Langeard got the better of Drew Superstein (6-3, 6-3) at No. 1 to give the Bulldogs the lead. However, the lead was short lived as Thompson defeated Will Goldberg (6-4, 6-4) in the No. 6 position to tie the score at two. Next, Heffron would give the Terriers the lead with his win over Ryan Matthews (6-4, 6-4) at No. 4. UNC Ashville would tie the match for the second time when Schubel outlasted Duncan to claim the three set victory (6-4, 3-6, 6-4).
The match would be decided by the No. 3 match-up between Galloway and Waissen as all they teammates looked on. Galloway won the first set 6-4, dropped the second 7-6 in a tiebreaker, but dominated the final set (6-0), including three breaks, to secure the first victory of the season for Wofford.
The Terriers return to the court on Saturday, February 9, when they host the Mercer Bears at 1:00 p.m. at the Reeves Tennis Center.
