N.C. – The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga wrestling team improved to 3-0
in Southern Conference action with Sunday's 29-9 win at Appalachian State. The Mocs took eight of 10 matches, including
a pin and four shutouts, to improve to 7-6 overall.
Chattanooga sophomore Nick Soto, ranked No. 18 in the nation at 125 this
week, opened with a 10-2 major decision over Dominic Parisi. Appalachian State had a brief highlight at
133 with Brett Boston's pin over freshman Marvin Lopex. Boston, celebrating his Senior Day, gave the
Mountaineers a 6-4 lead with his fall just 46 seconds into the match. He is
Appalachian State’s active leader in career wins.
Senior Dean Pavlou put the Mocs back on top 8-6 with another major
decision win at 141, topping Chris Johnson 13-4. Junior Alex Hudson shut out Zach Ketcher 4-0
at 149, followed by sophomore Trey Stavrum's shutout win (5-0) at 157 over
Aaron Scott.
Chattanooga senior Josh Condon continued his hot streak with a third
period pin at 165. He is 3-0 in SoCon
matches with three falls. Freshman Sean
Mappes gave UTC a 23-6 lead with a 7-2 decision over Colin Hedash at 174.
The Mountaineers’ Jake Johnson scored an overtime win against senior
Robert Prigmore. That would be the last point Appalachian State would score on
the day.
Senior Niko Brown moved to 22-3 overall and 11-0 in dual matches with his
shutout at 197, besting Paul Weiss 4-0.
Sophomore Kevin Malone closed out the contest with a 5-0 shutout over
Joe Cummings at heavyweight.
The Mocs are back on the mat on Sunday, hosting Davidson at Maclellan Gym
at 2 p.m. The Mountaineers will be on the road for the rest of the season,
starting their road trip on Saturday at Virginia. The dual is slated for 1 p.m.
